🧘‍♀️ #the8limbsofyoga The 1st limb is #yama, it translates abstinence. The word #Yama is rooted in YAM, control. It's like the commandments, but with a difference. Yama come from the study of human needs, and to create harmony with others. They are the roots of this tree of life, with them we lead an authentic life. It is divided in 5 parts. ✋🏻 #ahimsa is the 1st yama - non violence, the most popular Yama, it means that you should refrain from any form of violence, in whatever shape it may present to you: words, actions, thought... You may want to slap someone's face, eat meat (yes, that's violence too, unless done for a purpose), telling or thinking "that one's so fat"... 🗣️ #satya is the 2nd Yama - truthfulness, another tricky one! It means speaking the truth to the others, and to oneself. It means also, not lying on our accomplishments (during a job interview, or on social media). A big part of our brains is occupied by trying to look good, to seem worthy, and we don't rely much on actually being so. All of us, including me, were conditioned to think this way by a billion factors: society, family, school, sanitary system, social media... Example: your partner asks you if he\she looks good in that outfit. You think that it's too small, and it the colours are all wrong. Your partner looks ridiculous, but to apply ahimsa and satya you need to tell him\her in a certain way. And that INCLUDES THE RESPECT FOR ANIMALS AND ENVIRONMENT! These days they are striking for #climatechange, a good thing, but I'm afraid they're doing it the wrong way: they're involving just one category of the population, the teens. As if they were the only ones who'll suffer from this. We all will. We all make mistakes, if we don't, it means we're not trying. #the8limbsofyoga: let's chat! Limb number 2: #nyiama The word Niyama means respect, and on the observation. They are 5, and they act in an inner level of self development. While the Yama were more about the moral aspect of a human being, these are more practical. . #saucha is the first Niyama and it means #purity. In terms of physical body, we should keep it clean and steer away from not nurturing foods (alcohol, sugars...). In the #hathayogapradipika there's also a detailed description of how and when to clean different parts of our body. Have you read it? What do you think? . #Santosha is the second, and it means being content with what we do have. The sun, the wind, water and air, are all things that we have been belled with. #the8limbsofyoga . I thought to give this little series a sort of introduction. The 8 limbs of yoga, or #ashtanga, are the theoretical base of yoga. This means that you can read of these in a book or even here, but you need to experience them, to fully embrace them, you need to experience them. . Yoga is not fitness, it's not a way to relax, not at all a religion. Yoga is union. Between all of the opposites. It's balance. To gain this balance, both physical and mental, the 8 limbs of yoga come in our help. They are described in #theyogasutras by #patanjali, but you can understand what they mean by getting a really good teacher, or with the book (preferably with explanations). 👉🏻 How often do you hear "I would like to start yoga, but I'm not flexible enough"? 😅 #the8limbsofyoga Limb number 3: #asana! This is maybe the most popular limb, and in fact, it's often confused with the totality of yoga. The body is a temple of the spirit. Through the postures we keep it healthy, clean, and develop concentration and discipline. They were once practiced before meditation, to help the body get ready for it, and in the morning, empty stomached. . On a side note: we often see so many Yogis do contortionist poses, me myself I often rely on my flexibility. But. That is not Yoga. This #mermaidpose is the result of years of practice, and still it couldn't be considered an asana by many teachers. AND being inflexible is not an excuse to not start doing yoga. #the8limbsofyoga Let's chat about the 2nd limb, #Niyama, and the last three of them. . #tapas means austerity, but not as you may think: it means to have a purpose and to do what's necessary to get it. To attain a state of enlightening we need such a virtue! . #svadhyaya is the study of the self. Know yourself and you'll know your enemy, and by that I mean that you would want to know you, your flaws, your distractions... And the sacred texts too, are included in this study, for we are the same as our deity. . #isvarapranidhana is composed of two words: isvara means surrender, and pranidhana means divine. Basically is to let yourself and everything go to the... Nature! Literally, everything is sacred and is healing. Walk barefoot in the grass, feel the sun on your skin, swim in a lake... Feel it. Do not eat too much, drink too much, or shout... In respect to those less lucky than we are. . #brahmacharya - chastity This is often misinterpreted. One should never waste his\her vital energy, or his bodily fluids, the sexual energy.
