"Ever thought this day would come, Tones?"
"Not in a million years," Tony answers, fixing his bowtie in the mirror. "I'm not complaining, though."
Rhodey laughs with him. He shakes his head and comes over, pulling Tony away from the mirror and positioning himself in front of the man. He catches his trembling hands and pulls them away softly, then straightens the stubborn bowtie, finally taming it.
"There," he says and pats Tony on the shoulder. Tony's clenching and unclenching his fist, the same damn arm he's been having problems with for a decade now, a nervous gesture.
"Hey, it's gonna be alright. You've been practically married for years now, this is just making it official."
Tony doesn't seem too encouraged by his best friend's words but nods nonetheless. He stops with his fist and instead starts fumbling with his cufflinks - a wedding present from him and Happy.
Rhodey shakes his head with fondness and leaves Tony to his fumbling for a moment to check up on Pepper.
"Everything alright with the bride?" Rhodey asks Happy, who's staying outside the door to her changing room, sweat running down his forehead while an alarmed look paints his features.
"Yeah she uh," Happy gulps, "she's just nervous."
Rhodey shakes his head for a third time today, but doesn't say anything to poor Happy. He turns on the knob and steps inside, shutting the door behind him and ducking in the nick of time. He avoids a pair of expensive high heels to the face, the shoes sliding off the door where his head was not even a second ago.
"Who pissed in your cereal?" Rhodey asks, indignant, not about to take any bullshit from his friends, especially not today. He dusts off his suit jacket, straightening the collar as he stands up again to his full height.
"I'm losing my mind here, James," Pepper rants, pacing around the room in her wedding dress. Rhodey's amazed by her ability not to trip on the hem. "The hairdresser's still not here and I have to walk down the aisle in 15 minutes!"
Rhodey can see she is barely refraining from tugging on her hair in frustration.
"He'll be here, don't worry."
"But what if he won't?!"
"Pepper, you and I both know you could walk out of this room in a torn potato sack with a raccoon for hair and Tony wouldn't be able to say "yes" fast enough."
Pepper shakes her head as if she hasn't heard him and starts pacing again. Rhodey thinks about it before opening his mouth but decides that nothing could be worse than no hairdresser at all.
"Or I could do your hair."
This stops the ginger in her tracks. She's now looking at Rhodey like he grew a second head and for a moment he regrets saying anything at all.
"I'm not promising anything fancy, but I used to do my...sister's hair when she was younger. I think I've still got it."
Pepper blinks then breaks out into a wide smile.
"What do you think?"
"Rhodey, if I wasn't about to get married to the love of my life I'd kiss you right now."
Rhodey chuckles and walks over to Pepper, letting her hair loose and gathering his tools to do her hair.
"Not breaking that poor bastard's heart is enough payment for me," he says and starts working.
Meanwhile, Peter and Happy make their way apprehensively into Tony's changing room. No noise filters out through the door and that worries the pair more than any ruckus ever could.
Peter is the one to open the door cautiously, expecting Tony to be curled up into a ball on the floor having an existential crisis, but he sighs in relief at the sight that greets him instead.
Soft AC/DC music is drifting through the air, the volume so low it feels like it's part of the air itself. Tony is by the window, a small hardback book perched on the windowsill as he thumbs through it with a fond gaze. Peter recognizes it immediately as his and Pepper's engagement album.
When the teen first heard of their idea, it seemed odd to him. Didn't people have wedding albums? Not engagement albums? He'd never heard of that one before. They explained it was something they both wanted, especially with their wedding so close after saving the world and getting everybody back. They wanted something to commemorate that, a physical proof that everyone was safe and sound.
They gathered the entire gang and spent an entire day goofing around in front of a professional photographer. That's one of the happiest memories Peter has from the past few months. He and May had a blast that day.
Peter makes his way over to Tony with light steps, Happy standing behind by the door. The man gives him a thumbs up, allowing the teen to have his moment with his mentor before the big wedding.
"What's up, Mr. Stark?"
Tony lifts his head up and looks at Peter with soft brown eyes. Tears are glistening in their depths, making the brown sparkle and glimmer with their wetness.
"I'm so happy, kid. I've been waiting for this day for years and now that it's finally here...I can't believe it." Tony takes a deep breath before continuing, sounding choked up. "I'm afraid I don't deserve it," the man confesses.
Peter shakes his head vehemently, his curls bouncing on the top of his head with his movements. "If anyone deserves this, Mr. Stark, it's you. After all the years you've lost defending the Earth and losing yourself with every battle, you deserve your moment of happiness."
The tears fall then, but Tony smiles instead, one of the biggest ones Peter's ever seen. The man's eyes crinkle at the corners, big crow's feet forming on his face, and it's the most gorgeous Tony's ever looked.
"Thank you, Pete," Tony whispers and pulls the kid into his arms for a hug. Peter hugs right back with the same enthusiasm he hugged Tony the first time, happy to comfort his mentor in any way possible.
"Boss, I think it's starting," Happy interrupts them then. They pull away and Peter gives Tony another bright smile, easing Tony's worries like magic.
The man straightens his suit, nods to himself once, then walks out of the room with Peter and Happy, taking his place at the altar. The two take their places in the front row, next to Nebula and her family on the right side. On the left side, Steve gives him a smile and a nod, while Nat, Thor, Bruce, Sam, Clint and his family wave at him with big smiles on their faces. T'Challa and his family are a row behind them, followed by Scott, his daughter and the Pyms, Carol Danvers, Maria and Monica Rambeau, Wanda and Vision, Stephen Strange and Wong, Nick Fury and Maria Hill.
Everyone is staring back at Tony with big smiles and genuine happiness in their eyes, and that gives him strength.
The wedding music begins, drawing everyone's attention to the entrance where Pepper is slowly being walked to the altar by Rhodey - in Pepper's parents' absence, she decided to have him walk her. Her fiery hair is done in a simple yet elegant braid and the dress hugs her body perfectly but Tony sees none of that: his eyes are glued to her face, to her beautiful freckles that remind him of the countless constellations he's seen up in space, and her blue eyes that have entire galaxies trapped inside their midst.
He's transfixed and he almost misses the moment Rhodey hands her over to him, leaving the pair in front of the priest while he takes his place next to Peter.
Tony feels like a teenager with a crush all of a sudden, hot under the collar under Pepper's beautiful gaze. She smiles at him sweetly and places her hand reassuringly on his arm, as if knowing his turmoil, and Tony forces down his anxiety, instead refocusing on the priest's words.
They each say "I do", the priest finalizes the ceremony, and they're left gazing into each other's eyes with all the love in the world, ready to share their first kiss as husband and wife.
"I love you, Pepper," Tony says before they lean in to kiss, but he keeps his eyes open, unwilling to lose a second of this moment, wanting to take everything in - from the way the light his Pepper's hair just right, to the way a wild strand falls into her eyes. The moment their lips meet, everything turns to black and Tony smiles, bittersweet.
"Thank you for that," he says into the abyss, knowing the abyss is listening. His soul feels light and airy, and he's now ready to embrace his end. His last thought is Pepper before his entire being shatters into millions of pieces, taking the Infinity Gauntlet with him and restoring the universe to its original state in the process.
