The compact, evergreen shrub Skimmia × confusa 'Kew Green' has been covered in small, fragrant greenish-yellow flowers that were very popular with the local bees. This cultivar is a male plant so it can be planted with female varieties to help pollination resulting in a cheerful display of red berries.

In the fertile, moist soil and shade of this walled garden Erythronium californicum 'White Beauty' (fawn lily) and Erythronium 'Pagoda' (dog's tooth violet) were thriving. These herbaceous perennials are woodland plants with green leaves mottled with brown.

The root parasite Lathraea clandestina (purple toothwort) is mainly found on Populus (poplar) and Salix (willow) species but here it had parasitised an Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) cultivar (note the spectacular graft at the base of the trunk). It is a native of Belgium, France, Spain and Italy but has become naturalised in Britain and New Zealand. This perennial root parasite lacks chlorophyll and has yellow roots that grow from a rhizome (underground stem). The haustoria (suckers) at the tips of the roots attach to roots of the host plants, generally on the upper side to derive the food they need. The plant thrives in semi-shade where the soil does not dry out completely and with a suitable host tree. The purple flowers are pollinated by bumblebees.

This small evergreen tree is Persea ichangensis which is a rarely grown in gardens. This specimen was at Wakehurst Place, Sussex, UK. It may have been grown from seeds sent by E. H. Wilson, but the species was also collected by George Forrest in Yunnan, China, on numerous occasions. If you recognise the genus it might be because Persea americana is an avocado tree.

Through the Botanic Garden at Wakehurst, Sussex, for just over a kilometre, runs a series of outcrops forming small cliffs made of Ardingly Sandstone and growing over these can be seen the amazing root systems of Taxus baccata (yew).

Here Narcissus bulbocodium (hoop petticoat daffodil) has been naturalised in the grass beneath a Magnolia stellata. This delicate bulbous perennial has slender, dark green leaves and yellow flowers with large, funnel-shaped trumpets and very narrow perianth segments.
