Limit of Love
For @ghostqueenlucie
Ship: Lucie Herondale and Jesse Blackthorn
Prompt: "This isn't up for discussion."
The night had a heavenly glow, which seemed to shine through the full moon. Perhaps that's the only heavenly thing of the night.
Lucie wrapped a scarf around her. It was a cold night but she didn’t know if she was shivering because of it or due to the task that lie ahead. She had her weapons ready. And now she was just waiting for the moment when everyone in the Institute would be asleep and she would be able to sneak out.
Lucie wished there were some other way but she had to go against her mandate today. She will kill today.
She used to wonder about love once. How far can someone go for it? She used to wonder so. Afterall, she was a writer. Today, it felt that she had received her answer. Or perhaps, she'll be the one to extend the limit. Tonight.
Her heart beat fast. She was scared to know whether the night would be a success. Or it would not. She was going against everything she had ever known tonight, every single law she had learnt about.
She got ready when she heard the silence around the Institute. She checked her weapons once, when she heard a noise near the window in her room. Knowing it couldn’t be someone else right now, she turned around.
Jesse Blackthorn.
She cursed.
Lucie had made sure that there would no way for him to know. She had made Grace swear as well. To not say anything about the necromancy to anyone, including Jesse. But what plan had ever gone as it's expectations?
"Lucie, don't do it." Jesse said in a tired voice. In the voice of a person who knows he was going to lose but would still try until the last minute.
It seemed he had tried to convince Grace as well. And failed.
Lucie took a deep breath. This was going to be a long conversation.
"Jesse, I have to. I never break my promises."
"Lucie, there is a limit to that as well. This isn't just illegal, this is destroying the balance of the world we live in. You can't do this!"
"Jesse- "
Lucie started but soon got interrupted
"No! Lucie, no! You can't do this! This is completely wrong! It wasn't right when my mother tried before and just because you have powers to help you, doesn't mean it's right now." Jesse cried out loud.
"Jesse, I'm doing this and you cannot stop me." Lucie made a feeble attempt to stop the conversation.
"My life isn't worth destroying everything, Lucie." Jesse replied.
His words left a moment of silence.
And Lucie then spoke.
“This isn’t up for discussion! How can you expect me to watch you fade away every time as soon as the sun starts to rise? How can you expect me to watch you yearn for life when you could've had it back if you had not saved James? How? I'm most grateful to you for saving him but I- I can't-"
She had said it all in a broken tone. She couldn't handle it well when he said he wasn't worth it.
To her, he was worth everything.
She was unable to form words. Her words seemed to not matter to her for the first time. She only wanted Jesse to understand. She just wanted him to understand why she had to do so.
“I helped you" Jesse started "because I couldn’t watch someone you loved to die in front of your own eyes —especially when I could have helped! I wouldn’t have been able to watch you grieve. It would've broken me to see you upset. I did what I had to. Doesn't mean that you need to give up everything in an attempt to help me."
Lucie recognised his intention even though he had not exactly said so. How could she have not, when her motive was the very same. Just the consequence would be comparatively major.
“Well, then you shouldn’t stop me from doing this either. I love you, Jesse. Every minute I am unable to see you, it breaks my heart."
She spoke quietly then, "I'm sorry" and then she willed Jesse to go away.
"Luc-" That was all that Jesse managed to say before Lucie's power forced him to leave.
He faded away into the night.
Faded away as he always did every morning.
Faded away in the way Lucie had always hated.
She felt a tear make its way through her face and she rubbed it away as the wind blew near the window and she turned away to move ahead with the plan.
It was time now.
