How our egos crop up on the mat and robs us from the real peaceful and kind essence of a yoga practice. . 👹Firstly, What is ego? . Ego is that nagging voice in your head that critiques you/ pushes you/ compares you. It’s the voice that tempts you to look around the yoga room and compare your practice, your body and health to someone else’s. It’s the bombardment of comparison and force that leads you to question why are you not as fit / strong/ bendy as someone else. . . 🧘🏻♀️What is Alignment ? . When I teach I explain alignment in 2 ways:- 💞the alignment of physical posture to keep the body safe. 💞the alignment to your values and intentions of how you want to live, show up and practice. Values like kindness, acceptance, non attachment and contentment . These #yogatransformation highlight ego’s push points vs alignment cues I would use to uphold the integrity of the pose and honour your body . . 👹Ego picture: 👹 - Unnecessary depth to the lunge - Sinking to extreme for outward glory - Putting hips under a lot of pressure - Believing deeper is better - Choosing ego over health of body - Attached to external gratification - Not being mindful 🧘🏻♀️Alignment picture: 🧘🏻♀️ - Spine long tall and straight - Effectively stretching hip flexor - Active stretching protecting ligaments - Proportionate depth of lunge - Using strength of thighs feet and glutes - Harder to maintain as the muscles and mind have to work - Unconcerned with external gratification as internal feeling feels good . Next time you come to the mat in class or at home and you feel that critical voice inside ask yourself, how do you want to show up today? . During my visit to the one of orphanage and homeless school called @lovingheartsuganda In Kabale district, Lake Bunyonyi and I had yoga with them then I told them the benefits of yoga in to their life's if they take it has their daily basis activities. Yoga can develop your physical and mental strength. Another side effect of yoga is that it will help you develop some truly incredible mental and physical strength. The whole point of yoga is to work on your body’s strength so that you can sit for longer in meditation, and the physical investment in the stretches and positions ensures that you’ll experience plenty of physical strength benefits as a result. The breathing exercises can improve your lung capacity, and lunges and stretches can increase your core strength as well as every muscle you can think of; meanwhile, the exercises force you to focus on the moment, and during meditation, to clear your mind, which helps alleviate stress and improve your mental health. I found some "progress pics" I took last year February when I was just getting into a more committed and regular routine of yoga. The first pic was taken 2 days ago in a floating split variation and the 2nd pic taken February 2017....trying to get into the splits.... It's incredible to "see" progress and really inspires one to keep going. Thats why "before and after " pics are so popular because it really shows the journey the body has travelled. Many times when we are in the midst of a bit of a struggle or challenge we often can't always see our achievements or progress because we are either physically or emotionally (or both) pre occupide with things that are going wrong instead of the things going right. I am currently struggling with a bit of a hamstring adductor (not actually sure) limitation. Extremely tight and feels it's located at the insertion of the muscle. My movement feels limited my breath feels limited and my progress feels stagnant. However, Seeing these 2 pics side by side reminds one that when you stay committed and dedicated, positive change will occur. YES there will be "road blocks" and uphills but they are all part of making you physically and mentally stronger for where you want to be.
