So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and it’s difficult to find natural fiber clothes that aren’t made of cotton
c. She’s a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked “So where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isn’t polyester” and mom was like ‘go ask your sister’
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like “GET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR U” and honestly I’m thrilled about this
“Where did u get all this”
“Bets, u know I’m a 15th degree blackbelt of buying shit on the internet”
“oh yeah tru”
Op can may we inquire about the website list
Linen; https://www.graylinelinen.com/
cotton and Silk thread; https://redrockthreads.com/
Linen thread and wool fabric; https://burnleyandtrowbridge.com/ (they’ve got wool stuffs and worsted wool fabric for $15 a yard! I just got three yards of navy worsted wool I’m making a constellation winter skirt from)
More linen thread and wool; https://wmboothdraper.com/ (just ordered wool broadcloth to make a coat)
Silk fabric (THE best place to get silk lining fabrics and raw silk fabric):https://www.dharmatrading.com/
A varying assortment of wool and silk and cotton and even some leather, use coupon code spring2020 for 50% off your full order, worked yesterday when I bought some stuff there; https://metrotextilesnyc.com/
Wool. You want wool coating for under $20 a yard? Sure you do. It’s here. Not a huge variety of colors, most are black or brown, but hey https://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/Catalog?refinementIds=4096748&Keyword=wool&pageSize=16
I don’t know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when I’m watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(I’ve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what I’d go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.
Renaissance Fabrics is good for all sorts of things
Mood doesn’t specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
For wools, I cannot recommend Woolsome enough! They’re a bit more expensive then the above links, but they have a spectacular range of colours and weights, as well as diamond pattern and herringbone weaves. They also have a range of linens, though not as extensive.
Historical fabrics for re-enactors
Tiedtohistory.com has sheer voile linen
The Linen Lab has a variety of weaves, weights, and colors available
Period Fabric has a variety of wools, but switch to the full website if you’re on mobile
Hey i’m a fashion design student so i have tons and tons of pdfs and docs with basic sewing techniques, pattern how-tos, and resources for fabric and trims. I’ve compiled it all into a shareable folder for anyone who wants to look into sewing and making their own clothing. I’ll be adding to this folder whenever i come across new resources
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16uhmMb8kE4P_vOSycr6XSa9zpmDijZSd?usp=sharing
Updated just now with new hand sewing resources (mainly buttonholes) and textbook pdfs on fashion history, fashion illustration, and thinking through designs!
OP I owe you my life
OP you are the greatest person currently in my life. You beautiful, thoughtful creature.
You are a saint thank you so much

Here’s the link to all of the free online classes offered by Harvard:
https://www.edx.org/school/harvardx
But TBH I prefer the MIT Open Coursewear approach. Feel like taking a class on the policy and economics of nuclear engineering? MIT’s got you covered:
https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/find-by-topic/#cat=engineering&subcat=nuclearengineering&spec=nuclearsystemspolicyandeconomics
In fact they’ve got you covered with A LOT of their courses, everything from fine arts to immunology.
Have fun :)
WHERE HAS THIS BEEN THE LAST TWO YEARS
Nov 18 | I printed some of my favourite holiday pics from last month. I’ve stuck a few in my travel journal and I think I’ll display the rest on a line. Love how they turned out!
Winter oats and revision. Afternoon exams are the worst, you can’t relax all day and keep checking the time to make sure haven’t lost track of time. But at least midterms will be over tonight!

Day 5 of 100 Days of Productivity
I’m absolutely geeking over these highlighters! I started next week’s reading for my lit class (Daisy Miller by Henry James), finished notes for research methods, and went over my notes for bio!

There’s a cafe on campus I really like. I rescheduled my job interview for tomorrow and I ranted on twitter today which made me feel a little bit icky and anxious, because I stand by what I stand for, but it’s just… twitter, you know? (I’ve had my acc since 2012 but I’m trying to use it more)
On a happy note, I went for my conference draft meeting with my professor today and she really liked my paper. I got full scores for my peer reviews and 48/50 for the actual paper. I’m so pleased because I worked hard on it!
Early morning session studying biology ✨
17.09.2018 || Notes on Chomsky
These notes are kinda old but they’re some of my favourites. Got my human biology mock exam in just over a week so I need to get this stuff into my head! So much coffee/tea has been consumed in the last few days. (Also the colour here is a bit of a nod to my favourite AFL team who have made the grand final! Which coincidentally is the weekend before my exams… whoops!)
um i just wanna do a facemask, get a new wardobe, and fall in love is that too much to ask
tips for saving money on food- as students
buy in bulk from middle eastern stores I buy all my legumes, lentils and such from middle eastern shops. This helps me make filling meals for cheap
make soup. Honestly when I’m in a bind… SOUP! Very easy with simple ingredients you can make tomato soup, pumpkin soup, sweet potato soup. Use some veggie stock without MSG and make some tasty stuff!
buy fish tinned! honestly so much cheaper than the stuff in the deli. You can get tuna, salmon and a couple of other types I’m fairly sure.
buy your veg from the frozen section I buy a massive variety of frozen veg and defrost them to bulk my meals~
ask and find out when your local shops start their sales honestly, it’s worth it. Ask the people who work there when things go on sale, what will go on sale.
for fresh fruit ask to buy in bulk bananas about to go off in the back! Life saver. They’re most likely going to throw that stuff out! Ask if you can buy it on sale, freeze anything you don’t use immediately and use in smoothies, pancakes, banana bread!
grow your own veggie patch life saver. Whether you only have space for herbs or you have an entire garden, plant whatever you can!
buy prepackaged food before closing if you have to buy from food vendors, eg. a bakery, Chinese etc, buy at the end of the day before closing so that stuff has gone on sale.
42/100 days of productivity
I watched Mean Girls a few days ago and man, its so good, I’m SHOOK
