What if Sansa’s coronation dress is Catelyn Stark’s wedding dress?
I’m mostly pulling this out of my ass but I don’t care.
I’ve seen people compare Sansa’s Queen in the North crown with Robb’s cape clasps, which he wore at the Red Wedding.
I thought, “Cool.” Then I thought, “Are there any other nods to her family in her dress?”
The obvious bits are the weirwood tree imagery on her armor corset and on her sleeves for her northern heritage, her father, and possibly even Bran since the Three-Eyed Raven in the show lived in a giant weirwood tree (and in the books, the Three-Eyed Raven Crow teaches Bran to see through the eyes of weirwoods to view what’s happening in the world).
She also keeps her chain necklace, which the fans have dubbed her “needle necklace” due to the sharp point on the end. This is her link to Arya.
I don’t think there’d be any link to Rickon since, let’s be real, nobody on the team knew what to do with him and that’s why D&D killed him.
Even though Jon isn’t her brother, I’d argue that the overall color scheme, white with red, is for him since his Direwolf is white with red eyes.
Finally, I noticed the fish scales.
It’s pretty obvious this is in memory of her mother, since Catelyn Stark grew up as a Tully of Riverrun. Her sigil was a trout.
One day I had a thought: What if this dress Sansa wears is the same dress Catelyn Tully wore when she married Eddard Stark?
Ned married Catelyn in the Sept at Riverrun, in the beginning of Robert’s Rebellion. It makes sense to me that she would wear something nice, but simple. She probably would incorporate fish scales into her dress.
I’ve noticed the brides in GoT shore more of their unique traits in their wedding dresses when they’re not forced into the marriage. Daenerys’s wedding dress is simple and faded, which contrasts her dragonscale embroidery and deep blues in future episodes. Sansa’s first wedding dress is covered in Lannister lions choking stark direwolves, and the second lacks any development she had in the Vale of Arryn (no feathers, all white, etc.). Meanwhile Margaery’s first wedding dress has her personality all over it, and the second is more subdued but still beautiful and rich. Why wouldn’t Catelyn include her fish scales in her dress? Even if it was wartime and time was of the essence, she’s still going to look good.
What she likely would not include are the weirwood symbols, the over-the-shoulder wolf, or the needle necklace. So here’s my thought: Sansa recovered her mother’s dress after returning home from King’s Landing in the final episode. Either she got it from Riverrun or from her mother’s chambers. She embroidered the leaves herself, put the needle necklace on her hip, and asked the smith or a corset-maker to make the armor-corset, transforming her mother’s wedding dress into her coronation dress.
This doesn’t add much to the story, but it does have a feeling of “We’ve come full circle” if Sansa were to be crowned in the same dress Catelyn wore when she married Ned.
