THE MOON LA LUNE. Now, it is the problem of #retrograde movement, contrary to that of life, which is suggcsted spontaneously by the Card of the eighteenth Major Arcanum of the #Tarot —"TheMoon". It is the antithesis of the seventeenth Arcanum "The Star". Par if the latter #evokes ideas, feelings and #impulses of will relating to the evolution of life and consciousness, concerning their #infinite development, the former evokes ideas, feelings and impulses of will relating to the #inversion of the #evolutionary move-ment of life and consciousness, i.e. to their envelopment, #arrest of movement, and retrograde movement. Instead of the current which flows and the #verdant #shrubs of the Card of the seventeenth Arcanum, we find the #stagnant water of a #swamp and two rigid #stone #towers in the Card of the eighteenth Arcanum. In-stead of the #naked #woman who makes the current (which continues in its flow) #emanate from the two vases, we find an image of the most enveloped or shielded creature —the #crayfish —at the bottom of the swampy basin, and two #dogs (or a dog and a wolf) which are #baying at the #moon above. Lastly, instead of the #radiant #constellation of eight stars, we find the darkness of a total #eclipse of the moon. Through the totality of the context of its Card, the eighteenth Arcanum of the Tarot invites us to a #spiritual exercise — to a #meditation on that which arrests evolutionary movement and tends to give it a direction in an inverse sense. And just as the #dominant and principal theme of the seventeenth Arcanum is the agent of growth, so is it a matter in the eighteenth Arcanum of the special agent of diminution — the principle of the eclipse. Having understood this, one is led to decide upon the way of growth. Now, the #seventeenth Major Arcanum of the Tarot —"The Star"— is the #Arcanum of growth, just as the sixteenth Arcanum is that of construction. Therefore, it is a matter now of a #spiritual #exercise #devoted to growth, i.e. it is time for us to #concentrate on the problem of growth and to #meditate on its essential aspects with a #view to arriving at a contemplation of its #kernel or its #mystical #gnostic #magical #metaphysical #essence — in a word: at its #Hermetic essence. Let us therefore apply ourselves to this threefold task. A tower is built; a tree grows. The two processes have this in common: that they present a gradual increase in #volume with a pronounced tendency upwards. But there is at the same time the difference that the tower rises by leaps and bounds, whilst the tree shows a continuous elevation. This is because bricks or hewn #stones are put one on top of the other in the process of bulding the tower, whilst the microscopic "bricks"—the cells —of a tree multiply through division and growth in volume. It is the #sap in the tree, rising from the #roots into the trunk and branches, which renders growth of the tree possible and which makes it shoot up through the multiplication and growth in volume of its cells. THE TOWER OF DESTRUCTION LA MAISON DIEU Now, as the #fifteenth #Arcanum is related to #demoniacal evil, so the sixteenth Arcanum is related to human evil, i.e. to #evil which does not come from outside, but which certainly has its origin within the human soul. The unfortunate misunderstanding locating innate human evil in the body instead of in the #soul is due to a tendency towards a #materialistic interpretation of the Biblical story of #paradise and the Fall. Indeed, if paradise is understood as a place on the terrestrial or material plane, and if the Fall is similarly understood as having taken place on this plane, innate human evil cannot be understood otherwise than as biologically hereditary, i.e. that it is the flesh which bears it and transmits the seed of evil from generation to generation. Then it is the flesh which is the enemy of the soul and against which one has to struggle. Hence one "disciplines" it by flagellation, one weakens it by depriving it of food and sleep, and one scorns it and mistreats it in many ways #one is ashamed of one's body. However, it is the body which, rightly, has more reason to be ashamed of the soul inhabiting it, than the latter of the body. For the body is a #miracle of wisdom, #harmony and stability, which does not #merit #scorn but rather the £admiration of the soul. For example, can the soul boast of #moral principles as stable as the body's skeleton? Is it as indefatigable and as faithful in its #sentiments as, for example, the heart, which #beats day and night? Does it possess a #wisdom comparable to that of the body, which knows how to #harmonise such opposing things as water and fire, air and solid matter? Whilst the soul is torn by opposing #desires and feelings, this "contemptible" body knows how to unite opposing elements and make them collaborate: the air that it breathes, the solid matter of food, the water that it drinks, and the fire (warmth) that it produces unceasingly within it. . . The symbolic plant of the Equinox in #Druidry is the #trefoil or #shamrock which is also customarily worn on St. Patrick’s day – almost at the time of the Spring Equinox. The usual explanation for the use of the shamrock is that St Patrick once used its three-leaved shape to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity, but in fact shamrock is probably the national emblem of Ireland because of its earlier #Druidic associations, and it is seen by some authorities as a survival of the #trignetra a Christianised wheel or #sun symbol. A shamrock is a young sprig, used as a symbol of Ireland. Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, is said to have used it as a #metaphor for the Christian Holy Trinity. The name shamrock comes from Irish #seamróg ([ˈʃamˠɾˠoːɡ]), which is the diminutive of the Irish word #seamair and simply means "young clover". According to legend, the shamrock was a sacred plant to the Druids of Ireland because its leaves formed a triad, and three was a #mystical number in the Celtic religion, as in many others.
