You’re right and you should say it. I know the ‘sexy nun’ costume is normalized or whatever, but if you think about it for 0.5 seconds, you will realize that the whole point of it is to make a mockery of consent and respect. We have people who’ve made a public, lifelong commitment to a particular lifestyle and part of this lifestyle is them declaring (publicly, unquestionably, indefinitely) that sex is not part of their life goals.

If your response is to make an outfit mocking that choice, you’re telling me that you don’t respect their autonomy. You don’t recognize their ownership of their own sexuality. You don’t believe in their right to be anything other than an object of someone else’s desire.

As someone who came from a predominantly Catholic country and moved into a Protestant one, one culture shock I have still is how America just see November as the season prelude to Christmas. What do you mean November isn’t a distinct month from December? November is for praying for the souls in Purgatory. In the Philippines we always have a tradition to go to the cemetery on November 2nd because it’s All Souls Day. We visit our loved ones who passed away there. When we go there me and my cousins would always try to mold the biggest balls out of the melted candle wax that we can (as an adult I realize now that it’s supposed to be a solemn occasion but we were kids back then).

Yeah there’s a countdown to Christmas but November is not Christmas season.

As an immigrant I don’t really have grandparents who are buried here so we haven’t kept up this tradition but I still see November as a month to pray for the dead.

There was a world where priests acted like priests, dressed like priests, spoke like priests and talked about God, as it befits real priests. If you were looking for them, they were in confession or kneeling in front of a Tabernacle, in churches that had the beauty and sanctity of churches. If you greeted them with "Laudetur Jesus Christus" they knew what to answer and they replied smiling. If you kissed their hands, they wouldn't find it back, scandalized. In homilies they spoke of Hell, of sin, of Satan and eternity; they spoke about what matters to know to save the soul.

It was a world where Mass was celebrated in Latin, maybe not everyone understood all the words but everyone understood that there was God and that He was descending on the altar because that ritual was a miracle, a mystery. Holy communion could be received only on knees and on your tongue and only they (priests) could touch it. They were priests who always kneels when they passed by the Tabernacle. You might not believe it, but it was hard not to respect them and treat them with respect.

They were men who entered the seminary with faith and came out priests with a strong faith and unquestionable doctrinal preparation. It was a world where priests were actually priests.
