Rewatching River’s episodes and it’s crazy how much she was mistreated by seriously everybody in her life, EXCEPT her parents. 11 has an extremely nasty habit of taking out his anger on her, to the point of bordering on emotionally abusive behavior. And it’s easy for the audience to understand that it’s because he’s terrified of getting close to her, but River doesn’t have that knowledge. Madame Kovarian is obviously evil, but more than that, she really actively delights in psychologically torturing River. The little bit of epilogue before The Wedding of River Song is so heartbreaking and so so revealing. Not to mention, River’s memory is canonically so fucked she can hardly remember a thing. She doesn’t remember Kovarian because she’s constantly surrounded by the Silents and while she knows she has to kill the Doctor, she doesn’t have enough memory to retain how and why- she’s programmed to do it and that’s it, it’s why she tells “Amy”/the Tesseract that murdering the doctor was all a bit fuzzy (paraphrasing). And Alex Kingston does SUCH a good job at differentiating Melody and River in ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’. Because River is always worried about losing Amy/Rory, it’s why she’s so protective of them (especially over Amy for obvious reasons) but Melody is just so viscerally scared that they are going to hate her for doing what she’s been programmed to do. Like imagine growing up as your mother’s best friend, knowing that you have to murder her mysterious childhood hero that she adores.

None of these are new revelations of anything, it’s just crazy how deep River’s psychological trauma must run. Like she must feel completely unmoored 98% of the time, and her memory is just really in tatters.

The thing about a lot of left-wing populists—those who are in what I would call the "utopian wing" of the left—is that they don't seem, in a really fundamental sense, to think conflicts are real. And this comes as an attachment to two principles: (1) conflicts are about resources and sometimes ideology (the latter can be dismantled) and (2) all goods are basically the same stuff. And I think both of those principles are obviously false. Notice here that conflicts are quite superficial and seem to just go away if society is organized the right way. And I think a faith that conflicts are really unreal in this way is not only going to disappoint you, even if the world is made in the revolutionary image, but it's also going to give you trouble in navigating your personal relationships. Sometimes people really do want things that fundamentally conflict with what you want and it doesn't mean that they're bad or they don't love you. There is no world in which it is all harmonious agreement of preferences, actions, duties, and so on. There are real conflicts in the good.

One tragic aspect of the Odyssey that I've never really seen handled by any adaptation is the link between Odysseus' marriage and the Trojan War itself.

When Helen was of age to be married, all the Lords of Greece came to seek her hand. This was an issue for her stepfather the King of Sparta who could only pick one husband and then would have to deal with the far greater number of angry rejected suitors.

One suitor was Odysseus, then a younger man. He quickly ascertained that he had no chance of marrying Helen. Ithaca was too poor for him to even bring any proper gifts, let alone a dowry. But he did catch the eye of the King's niece, one Penelope.

Now Penelope was still a bit out of Odysseus' league, but not so much as Helen was. So he makes a deal with the King of Sparta. Support my bid to marry Penelope, and I'll give you a solution to this suitors problem. The King agrees, so Odysseus suggests all the suitors swear an oath to defend Helen's marriage from anyone who might strike against it. They all, including Odysseus, so swear, and Helen is married to Menelaus. The King proves as good as his word, and Penelope is wed to Odysseus.

Of course this means that Odysseus has now bound himself to fight for Helen and Menelaus. After an attempt to feign madness he is forced to fulfill his duty.

So his own plan, to marry Penelope and stop a hoard of ravenous suitors, ends with him forced to defend his own marriage from a hoard of ravenous suitors.

The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and they’re frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.

I’m sorry but that’s thinking way too small, hear me out:

We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.

Think about it… who’s the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a moment’s notice?

animals i really want to introduce to the USA:

-red pandas in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. they can live in those you-pick orchards and delight tourists, and in the winter the big ones can be harvested by the farmers for food and fur. america also has native bamboo, as well as plenty of escaped invasives.

-koalas in southern california. we already have a lot of feral eucalpytus in the state and it makes our wildfires way worse. let's put koalas in there too. coyotes can hunt them like dingos do.

-cheetahs in colorodo, wyoming, nebraska, and oklahoma. we had cheetahs here once, that's why pronghorns are so fast. let's give them something to really haul ass about.

-spotted hyenas in texas and new mexico. did you know there's actually a shit ton of oryx already roaming around new mexico? they were brought in for a game preserve. oryx can fight off lions, but spotted hyenas are actually superior pack hunters with some of the highest kill rates of large cooperative predators in the world. we might have a problem with ranchers, but like: fuck ranchers. they already decimated the mexican wolf populations. they deserve hyenas.

-pangolins. i would drop these guys in arizona honestly. everyone in arizona hates and fears fire ants. i think entire neighborhoods would throw ecstatic parades for pangolins (which smell much better than giant anteaters) at least until a pangolin dug straight through their pasteboard condo.

-new zealand's little penguin in louisiana. they burrow into mud and sand banks during the day and tolerate quite hot temperatures! i think they'd do fine, and louisiana is sliding into the gulf anyway. let's have penguins there. i'd also try them out in new england in case lousiana is just too swampy for them. i feel like new yorkers would go insane with pride over having penguins around. they would act like they invented the whole concept of penguins. we should let them.

-water buffalo. georgia and the carolinas. i just think it would give everyone there some interesting new problems.

-i firmly believe that asiatic elephants would do great in the southeastern united states. it's a subtropical climate that's only going to get swampier as things heat up, and there's plenty of kudzu and tall grass species for them to munch on. they're also smart enough to learn to navigate and negotiate with people, and to follow set routes around human farms rather than tromp through them, so disruption to existing human infrastructure would be minimal but occasionally hilarious. i think it would be so cool to have an american subspecies of elephant. if i ever win the lottery this IS what i am going to be doing with my millions.
