A lot of people have a super, super skewed idea of what rural towns in America are like.

I grew up on a farm two miles outside a town with less than 200 people. For a short while, there was a queer-owned coffee shop/art gallery on the main highway. It's where I spent the better part of an entire summer, just hanging out with my laptop. The owner would start experimenting with new drink ideas on slow days, and give me free ones in exchange for feedback.

"And he didn't get run out of town?!" Nah, because his mom owned a hair salon and did the hair of all the old ladies in town, and if they were jerks to her son, she would have stopped doing up their hair and they'd have had to drive half an hour into the city to find a new hairdresser.

My hometown isn't some bastion of progressive politics or anything, but like...it's not a two-dimensional caricature, either. I still live in the area. There are queer people. There are a lot of people of color, especially Black elders and Latinx immigrants. There are disabled folks. There's an entire group of found-family queer leftists who bought a farm together. I know of at least two pagan families, and multiple Jewish folks.

If you read "town of 200 people" and immediately assumed that all of them are white, Christian, cis, straight, able-bodied, republican landowners? You're extremely mistaken.

Rural America is more diverse than you think.

This post is going around again, and people are so fucking determined to prove that I didn't "really" grow up rural.

"Half an hour outside a city isn't rural!" The literal definition of rural is "relating to the countryside instead of a town."

I grew up on a farm. I did not get an "allowance," I just did Farm Chores because that's what you do on a family farm. We traded shit with the neighbors because it was faster and easier than driving into town, much less the nearest city. Going into town for groceries was an Excursion. There was no such thing as a "corner store." I know what the stars look like. We had to worry about coyotes and foxes and bears getting into our trash and harassing our livestock. We had a flock of yard birds. We had a big garden and a pond stocked with fish and crawfish that we would fish up and eat. I grew up running around in the woods. I was taught basic wilderness survival safety from the time I was a small child, just in case I got lost or ran into a dangerous animal or otherwise had to navigate a dangerous situation out in the middle of nowhere. Not sure what else y'all want from me.

But all of that is a moot point anyway, because it's not even the actual point of the fucking post. Your arbitrary standards of "true rural" are irrelevant to the actual topic, which is that the South is more diverse than people pretend.

Also, to everyone who keeps telling me that I must be from the most utopian small town in the country: did you willingly ignore the part where I literally said my hometown is not a bastion of progressive politics, or are you just a pathetic little troll who will ignore everything someone says just to pick a little loser fight?

All I said was that marginalized people live in the South. If you decided to take that as, "so obviously it's not dangerous and Republican," that's...not really my fault. Get a hobby.

Another Fun Fact: Cheetahs are incredibly nervous animals. One of the (many) reason’s they’re going extinct is that cheetahs are so sensitive and nervous, some of them are literally too nervous to breed. Others will breed, but stress themselves out so much, they’ll lose their cubs. So zoos with breeding programs had to figure out how to make cheetahs comfortable enough to first of all, get laid and secondly - not spazz themselves into miscarrying. So what’d they do? Also! Cheetahs are not in fact classified as big cats, they are simply very large lesser cats, due to the fact that they purr, meow, chirp, and cannot roar. Also many cheetahs have learned to recognize wildlife photographers are friends and not foes, so they will just come up to people and be friendly occasionally as pictured at the top of the chain. this works because cheetahs are actually fairly social animals, and they look to members of their group for context on how worried they should be about any given Situation. but since cheetahs are also nervous social animals, they can work each other into an anxiety spiral pretty easily over things like “being in an enclosed habitat” and “there’s a guy over there”.

so by introducing a dog as a member of the group, the cheetahs will now look to the dog for context clues on how worried they should be! and the dog Is Not Worried At All, Thanks, so the cheetahs think everything must be chill even if they were personally unsure about it, and they stop being so freaked out about literally everything.

I truly don’t think people realize how dingy and dark most movies and tv shows actually are so they can’t appreciate the work and skill it takes to make gifs look the way your brain “remembers” it looking.

Another before and after example:

This gif needed 6 different adjustment layers, not including the sharpening process, which is its own separate challenge. The blue window was also changed to green to keep the palette more consistent and to reduce the range of colors needed, because a wider range of colors generally results in worse gif quality since gifs only support a max of 256 (compared to the millions your monitor can display).

The handwringing from the NFL head people after watching Damar Hamlin go down from cardiac arrest on the field during a live game was honest to God the perfect example of how traumatized Americans are and how companies are just like, business as usual. You saw the cruelty in action last night in real time and it just got worse and worse by the minute.

Officials expected the players to “shake it off” after watching Hamlin get worked on with CPR for about 10 minutes and then needing an AED to get stabilized enough to be carted OFF the field in an ambulance to the nearest trauma hospital.

The coaches and players were adamant about NOT continuing the game. You saw men sobbing and screaming and begging for the game to just stop because they could not continue to play after watching that. Officials really said take 5 and then continue play.

Players walked off the field. Coaches were like nah we’re done. THAT IS A HUMAN. THAT IS A HUMAN LIFE. THIS IS DONE. GAME OVER.

At this point that I’m watching this all unfold he’s just gotten to the hospital and now I’m watching NFL officials being torn to SHREDS by SOME of the public saying HELLO. STOP THIS. STOP IT. SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE FUCKING DIED.

But notice I said SOME. Because the other fucking half were screaming about MONEY and THIS IS A BIG GAME THAT CAN MAKE OR BREAK THE STANDINGS. It was talks about AD times and money being lost. It was talks about well the players know the risks and the game should continue in their honor right?

It was cartoonish evil in a way I started shaking at the rage of it all.

Customer was on the floor bleeding from the head and I was told to just keep ringing up people in the next lane. And to keep smiling and worry about my metrics for being a cashier. (speed, friendliness, commitment)

A shooting at a store in America, and you’re told you can keep working an hour later because there’s nothing you can do anyways and it’s the store across the STREET so you’re FINE.

But you know even if it was in your actual store you’d get the same fucking answer.

I mean it when I say that sports fans are bloodthirsty.

It’s all about breaking records now, about getting faster, stronger, buffer, about pushing the human body to the absolute extreme, further than it should ever go. And athletes are expected to do this every day. When they’re injured, they’re expected to go back and play as soon as possible. And games are so frequent that even those who weren’t injured while playing get stress injuries from never having a real break.

Sure, those in the professional leagues and teams get paid a lot, but think about how high school and college athletes go through the same amount of stress and physical endurance without access to the best in medical care. For many young people, sports is the only way for them to break the cycle of poverty- they have to sell their bodies, put their bodies through life-altering injuries just to get a college scholarship and make sure their family is housed.

Why should we be used to traumatic brain injuries??? It shouldn’t be the norm! These aren’t soldiers getting injured in battle, these are people performing for our own selfish consumption. It’s so normalized for performers in any performance industry to get horrific injuries: sports, dance, acting…..

We shouldn’t settle for that. We should be making the industry safer, or not support it at all.

All of this is absolutely correct. Some folks’ response to this has been “well it was just like any other hit!” and they’re right! ANY hit to the chest you see in a normal game of football could cause a cardiac arrest. ANY Of them could; doesn’t matter how young or athletic you are it’s a function of how the heart and nerves work hundreds of ppl die in the US every year from blows to the chest that weren’t meant to be lethal. Frankly it’s a miracle that we’ve only seen two of these in the history of the game, and that the second of them, Hamlin, actually survived the way the first, Hughes, did not.

Get rid of tackling. Make it flag only or switch it over to normal Rugby using the standard international rules. No game is worth a person’s life.

in light of people's confusion over cecil's longevity in @sexymanotd i wanted to document a bit of his history for those unfamiliar or nostalgic

welcome to night vale is a podcast written by joseph fink and jeffrey cranor. cecil gerschwin palmer is the main character and voiced by cecil baldwin.

it debuted on june 15, 2012 it reached its peak in popularity in 2013-2014

despite this, wtnv has been one of tumblr's top fandoms since staff started tracking fandom-related data in 2014

for the longest time the only thing we knew about cecil's appearance was: "He is wearing a tie. He is not tall or short. Not thin or fat." and that wasn't until episode 19 which aired march 15, 2013. for almost a full year we had no idea what cecil looked like. so tumblr's collective unconscious kicked into high gear and we did what we do best

we created a tumblr sexyman

from know your meme: "Defining traits of the archetype include skinny body type, trickster or villain role and dapper clothing."

know your meme identifies wheatley (portal 2, 2011) and the onceler (the lorax, 2012) as being likely tumblr's first sexymen. and the onceler fandom was at its peak in 2012-2013, the same time as wtnv. in addition to this, the hannibal fandom has been cited as one of the contributing factors to wtnv's success on tumblr.

so tumblr had created an archetype that worked and the wtnv fandom was made up of mostly hannibal fans - the foundation for putting cecil in a suit was there. and honestly? cecil's at work in the show, why wouldn't he be well dressed?

however, while this explains his attire it doesn't explain some of cecil's more unique sexyman features, namely the tentacles. for this we have to return to the 2014 fandom review analysis where you can see the most popular fandom at the time: homestuck

haven't you ever wondered why almost a quarter (189/923 at time of writing) of E rated wtnv fics on ao3 are tagged tentacles or tentacle sex? why cecil having tentacles for a dick is such a seemingly popular headcanon? well look no further then homestuck cultural hold over.

throughout all of this, the development of the sexyman archetype on tumblr and the rise of homestuck, one creator really stands out: kinomatika

kino was one of the most popular homestuck artists on tumblr at the time, popular for their eridan fanart. if you google image search "welcome to night vale" kino's art is still one of the first results you'll get

their design was so popular in fact it was featured in wtnv related articles from the time

and yes there were absolutely other artists giving cecil tentacles and moving tattoos at the time, but it can't be understated the reach kino had and the influence their homestuck roots had on their design choices

i recommend going through the archive of @nightvaleartclub to see how cecil used to be portrayed back in the early days. unfortunately the earliest fanart i've been able to find is july 2013 and i find it hard to believe it took tumblr a year to draw him. although, i started listening at episode 5 and didn't start drawing him until then myself so who knows...

cecil has had tumblr's heart in a vice grip since episode 1, with "20,000 posts, 183,000 blogs and 680,000 notes using the #Night Vale tag" during its first week. tumblr's love for wtnv has always been fairly genuine, from the impact the writing has had on tumblr humor and future story telling, to how wtnv paved the way for lgbt+ representation in indi media, to how it popularized podcasts as a medium for story telling, to the little comforts some of cecil's quotes still bring people today

cecil is not only a founding father of tumblr culture, but also a blorbo of the people. cecil the character in canon has a tumblr account where he posts his art and slash fanfiction.

although cecil's character has developed over time and we've come to see what a ditzy, eccentric, brat he really is, changing his status from sexyman to babygirl, cecil is absolutely a character you should embrace. and you know what... despite what i've said in the past

Like. Sure. There's a whole cultural thing training people to think hairiness or fatness or transness or whatever is unattractive. But it's not... all-powerful? Like sure the things presented to everyone by society as sexy are not that, but... so what? I have always had the option to observe people with different characteristics and come to my own conclusions. Everyone does (don't they??? It’s the unspoken implication that body positivity is some kind of ethical self-deception. If you’re attracted to fat or hairy or trans or otherwise “non-conforming” bodies it’s because you’ve diligently reconditioned yourself to be open-minded for the greater good—not the earnest expression of honest desire.

Not to get too controversial or personal here but that was a big thing that bothered me a few years ago when TERF discourse was really gathering steam. “Allies” would eagerly talk about attraction to trans women like it was this inorganic ethical duty people should sit down and work on like homework. I don’t want to dismiss the importance or reality of ~unlearning preconceived cultural biases~ but god, no wonder people lost their shit nasty about it, nobody wants to fuck or be fucked as homework.
