I’m in a Fiction and Poetry class this semester, and on the first day, we talked about how those filler words contribute to the natural rhythms of our speech patterns! We use them to keep the rhythm going, whether we’re consciously aware of it or not. So don’t be ashamed if you stutter or stumble–that’s just your natural rhythm, and it’s beautiful!

I think some people get the idea that filler words or other speech fillers are inherently bad because of what many of us learn in communications/speech class. I think it’s important to remember that those classes were for one very specific type of communication: persuasive and informative speeches. It’s a specific art form with specific rules your teacher was trying to train you to be able to perform by. Because that’s what a speech is: a performance.

But that also means  these rules don’t necessarily apply to everything in life, and they certainly don’t determine your value as a person. 

Certain forms of ballet frown on dancing on anything but the tips of your toes. That’s the rule in that specific art form during a performance, and you will lose points (so to speak) if you do not adhere to those rules. 

But imagine how silly it would be to say that was the only correct way to dance? Or to walk? Or to move?  Like shrinkthisviolet said, everyone has their own natural rhythm, and that should be celebrated.
