We've had Eldritch Horror Jolene and "The singer is in love with Jolene" but I just saw this youtube comment suggesting Jolene is a personification of death and I'm absolutely floored by it.
Like holy shit. "Flaming locks of auburn hair" just being literally flames, "Emerald eyes" being an unearthly green glow. The "ivory skin" line referring to the paleness of bloodless skin or even bleached bone, and yet Jolene is still spoken of as having haunting, enticing beauty, like a sort of angelic figure. The husband "talking about her in his sleep" meaning he's delirious with fever and keeps talking like he knows he's going to die. Of course the narrator can't compete with, or do anything about, a literal force of nature.
#music#reminds me of that one death image where she 'knew your dad well' and was an anti-war ad
actually YKW in honor of this, I'm going one further: what if the husband isn't sick, he's a soldier who just got sent off to war, and Jolene is not only a personification of death but a Valkyrie-like figure. The singer is not only begging Jolene, as a personification of the fortunes of war, not to take her husband but praying for her husband to remember that he has loved ones at home waiting for him and not succumb to the temptation of glory and "heroism" and self-sacrifice represented by Jolene's beauty.
I read etiquette and homemaking guides from the 1800s mostly because they're a FASCINATING insight into cultural norms that we often don't think about. I honestly really recommend people crack one of these open at least once--it goes way beyond, like, "what to wear to a ball!!!"
The best ones have advice on decor, how to select high-quality furniture, childrearing, fashion, etc--from a contemporary perspective, and the things the authors feel the need to clarify vs the wild shit that will just casually mention like it's something everyone knows and agrees on is REALLY revealing of the culture and how it's shifted.
And while a lot of the advice is WILDLY bigoted or just outright funny, you'd be surprised how much of it is...just genuinely timeless, and shockingly compassionate.
They ALSO, as a writer, have INVALUABLE resources--because, again, they're talking about things that are so MUNDANE that a lot of the time nobody really sat down to formally document what normal, everyday people thought or cared about--because that's boring! But a book written to provide advice and information to, say, a young woman who's never run her own home before? You can fully expect an entire chapter dedicated to The Types Of Oven, and which features are useful and worth spending money on, and which features are a huge hassle to clean and a waste of space, and what to spend that money on instead.
And like. As a writer who frequently works in the 1800s? Fuck inflation calculators, this is the kind of thing I need. This is absolutely priceless.
Now that being said.
My current favorite 'etiquette guide' in the world is actually like....70% purely practical advice, written by a gentleman the groupchat has affectionately dubbed History's Most Autistic Man In The World, and thank god they didn't have Aderall back then
Because the AuDHD is strong in this one and as a result, in addition to the deeply practical and useful everyday reference points, we also have:
The Great Lakes should have their own very small species of whale
hhhrrrnnffgg,, STURGEON !
STURGEON !!
Those pictures do not do them justice these fishies are humugajigajungous
‼️STURGEON‼️
@fishyfishyfishtimes
STUGGON!!!!!!!
My friend, are you in for a treat! The lake sturgeon, which is the sturgeon found in the Great Lakes, can grow to be two meters long and weigh 90 kilograms! It is the biggest fish found in the Great Lakes!!
But, see, the lake sturgeon isn’t the biggest sturgeon species. That would be the beluga sturgeon, which regularly grew to be four to six meters long before overfishing took a toll on their populations. Belugas are a lot younger on average nowadays — these fish can live to be over 100 years old — and seldom exceed three meters, but I mean, even that isn’t anything to scoff at. The very biggest beluga sturgeon ever caught was a jawdropping 7.2 meters long, and weighed 1 571 kilograms!! Other beluga sturgeons of such sizes have been caught too, and some unverified sources say that there has even been belugas that exceed 10 meters! They are the biggest freshwater fish in the world, and are up there among the biggest bony fishes in the world. That’s so big, it’s hard to even grasp or imagine. Seeing pictures of sturgeons puts it in a better perspective, I think. Here is a 800 kilogram sturgeon, a bit more than half of what the biggest sturgeon weighed:
Like, look at that. You see this?? That’s so fucking insane!!! Sturgeons never cease to amaze me with how… impossible they seem. These fish are like aquatic dragons or prehistoric beasts from days long gone, and in a way they are the latter! Sturgeons have been around as a group for over 160 million years, so they did indeed live in the age of the dinosaurs. Whenever I see pictures like this I can only wonder what the humans who first saw big sturgeons must’ve thought. I know what sturgeons are but I still have trouble grasping their gargantuan sizes, imagine seeing the dark form of a giant in the water and not having the faintest idea of what it is, or even that it's entirely harmless to humans.
Other sturgeon species are also very really big! The lesser-known kaluga isn’t that far behind at a maximum length of 5.6 meters and maximum weight of about a ton. Several white sturgeon that have exceeded three meters and even just shy of four meters and weighed over 400 kilograms have been caught, and the biggest, but unverified white sturgeon even caught was around six meters long and weighed 900 kilograms. The critically endangered Chinese sturgeon maxes out around five meters and 600 kilograms. All this to say, these old fishes are massive!!!
I get really rambly about fish, sturgeons especially ^^’ I just…. look!!! Look at them!! Isn’t that the most gorgeous beast you’ve ever seen? Don’t you wonder what life they have lived, what they’ve seen, heard, felt? If sturgeons could talk… they’re wonderful animals, and. Ahhh!!! Everyone needs to know about sturgeons!!!
I need to admit something to the US Tumblrinas. Philadelphia isn't a place to me. It's a cream cheese. You say "philadelphia" or "philly" and I immediately, and exclusively, think of the cream cheese. "Twelve people die in Philadelphia disaster" wow that must've been a Molasses Flood style event
No I trust the Americans, the cheese lovers, and the fans of the molasses flood to find this one on their own.
so frustrating to be a skeptic with a sense of whimsy because like. I want there to be cryptids. I want there to be magic. I want there to be evidence of something we don't fully understand and can't explain. but then 99% of the "proof" out there for that stuff is like. the most obvious scam you've ever seen in your life.
I must sleep. Sleep is the mind-healer. Sleep is the big-life that brings total ability to fucking do anything. I will face my bed. I will permit the blankie to pass over me and snores to pass through me. And when sleep has gone past I will turn the outer eye to greet the new morning. When the sleep has gone there will be everything. Energy and will to live will remain.
"when people ask how you're doing, they don't really care." most of them do, actually, the amount they care is just directly proportional to how well they know you. you're just mad you can't be the main character of the Twice Daily.
if i am doing shitty and the check out girl asks me, "how are you?" i will say,"man, i've been better." we are strangers to each other. she doesn't need to know my whole life story. she doesn't need to know about my credit score and my hemorrhoids or my uncle in the hospital. she just needs enough to respond "been there, buddy. hey, at least the day is almost over?" and then we part ways. i have been on both sides of thousands of exchanges like this, the only one making you do a little song and dance is you, my friend
hello I am at my wits end and I need to know something. Do you talk to your mother every day?
Yes
No
No nuance. If you don’t have a mother/are no contact etc this is not a poll for you.
You can elaborate as to how often you feel is a regular amount of communication between an adult child and their mother.

what does your url mean? ive been reading it as "cloud-a-berserk" but its actually cloud-ab-serk. what is a serk i need to know
so you know how a distance over time is called velocity, and velocity over time is acceleration? well if you divide by time again, you get “jerk”, and if you divide again, you get jounce, then snap, crackle, pop, lock etc.
but if you do the opposite and multiply a distance by time, you get absement. multiply again and you get absity (as in velocity), then abseleration (as in acceleration) and then abserk (as in the jerk) which is my favorite
Just realised I follow three different nonbinary people named Maia. The nickels keep rolling in.
I need to collect one who uses he/him pronouns, one I don't know very well, one who's slutty, and one who's really funny.
The I can have a Maia (he), Maia (who), Maia (hoe) and Maia (haha).
This is what having auditory processing issues is like.
So I have a terrible headcanon now...
I was reading through the Zelda wiki for Zonai because the ancient hero's aspect has me confused where the heck he came from (seriously the image on the tapestry was such a huge thing in botw and there were so many theories about why the hero had red hair, why did he not exist really in totk???) I mostly was trying to figure out if the hero came before or after Rauru.
Instead I went down a rabbit hole because the wiki (rightfully) compared the Zonai to freaking OOCCOO. The freaking BOOB BIRD. I hate it but it makes sense.

That’s a gunfight in a Looney Tunes cartoon
thanks, @tenspookybugs !
If you can’t hear this, it’s like a cross between a pinball machine and every silly “gunfire pew pew” joke you’ve ever run across.
Thank you @athenasdragon
Here’s the link if you don’t want to search for this in the notes!
On a completely unrelated note, the guy in the video who threw the rocks, Cory Williams, is responsible for this ancient Internet relic known as the Mean Kitty song.
Reblogging for first the ice ping, which I remember, then reblogging for the shock that is remembering Sparta The Mean Kitty.
Just adding in passing: this is why folktales in cultures that coexist with glaciers so often feature tropes suggesting that the glaciers are haunted by something—routinely, the spirits of the unquiet dead. And from the dead (or whatever else is up there, buried in the ice) come all kinds of weird and uncanny noises…
Oh so it’s GHOSTS having the gunfight
as humiliating as it is to repost myself from a light-mode-user's reddit screenshot, i cannot allow this year's zenquish to go uncelebrated.
celebrate my favorite holiday with me, my friends.
if the emperors of rome can add extra months that actually fuck the calendar up i'm allowed to add a new month that lasts 0.0000 picoseconds
the last holiday that hasn't been commercialized
i made this up when i was a little kid and nothing would make me happier than to see people celebrating it for years to come
zenquish approaches. prepare to rejoice! briefly!
depending where you are in the world, zenquish is either fast approaching or already over! rejoice!
