Things I need on a t-shirt: I just wanna go home and write fanfiction.
I drew this very specific ace artist meme with Mothman because I wanted to feel some happiness specific to me.
I wonder if one of the reasons that itâs so hard for content creators (especially fic writers) to get comments is because of the tumblr culture of likeâŚ
how dare you make a comment when you reblog. how dare you.
Like, we all know that right? Like, this whole culture of commenting directly in the comment box when reblogging is seen as heinous and awful and YOU SHOULD COMMENT IN THE TAGS INSTEAD. Especially if itâs seen as âunnecessaryâ (as in not adding to a conversation, or itâs just like âTHISâ or âYAYâ or something). Â
I mean, Iâve been on Tumblr since 2011, and I know that got burned into my brain. I still struggle with it, whether in feeling irritated when I see someone comment on a post âunnecessarilyâ or by feeling weird about commenting or even by staying in the tags to comment.
Literally that whole talking in the tags thing is a byproduct of that culture.Â
Obviously this is tumblr-centric but like, come on, I would imagine that viewpoint would stay with someone and they would avoid commenting on other places (like FF.net or AO3) as a result. Weâre all afraid of somehow committing a faux pas because tumblr is⌠well, itâs unforgiving.Â
This is just a thought, to be honest. I donât have a solution except that I think itâs a good idea to ignore that toxic opinion of Commenting on Posts is Bad and You Should Feel Bad. Just ignore it.
Iâm here to tell you that itâs okay to reblog and comment on fics. The content creators would be really happy if you did. They wonât yell at you. Theyâll be so happy you did. I promise.
Toot Your Own Horn!
For the fifth year in a row, TMNT Discourse opens up our comment section on DeviantArt so that you can Toot Your Own Horn! This year there are two fanfiction award competitions. Â We do not have dates for the TMNT Universal Fanfiction Competition yet, but as soon as we do, weâll let you know. Â
The second competition is the resurrected Adult Fanfiction Awards! The Nomination window for the AFFA opens Friday, March 20th. Â See the launch post here AFFA This is the time of year where you get the chance to recognize your favorite fandom writers/creators/artists. Â The starting point for that is of course the nominating process. You may think âOh thatâs easy! Â Iâve read so many great stories and seen such great art that I can nominate a lot of things.â Â But then when youâre faced with the nomination ballot, you freeze like a deer in headlights. Â Why? Â Because you canât remember all youâve consumed over the past year. Â You canât remember which of your favorite writers created a certain story, or which artist drew that comic you enjoyed. Thatâs the purpose of âToot Your Own Hornâ. Â Yes, we want fandom creators to self-promote. Â You should, you deserve the recognition for your hard work. Â There is nothing wrong with saying âHey, I was here. I left my mark.â But that isnât the only reason to make a list of your work. Â It helps those of us who are filling out our nomination ballots to remember the things weâve consumed over the past year. Â It helps us to find the things weâve loved. Â By listing your eligible works, weâll know what can be nominated. Â Too often the awards administrators have to âvoidâ a nomination form because it included something that wasnât eligible. It also helps us to make nominations in categories we might not be familiar with. Â Separating your works into categories for us helps us to make the proper selections, for example - does the story belong in the General Category or is it a Mature Category type of work? Please take a few minutes and make a list for us of your qualifying works for the past year. Â Works that qualify must have been started or updated in 2019. Â They donât have to be completed works, so long as some part of it was posted in 2019. In addition, works that placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any prior year competition do not qualify. Â If the work won a contest or competition on DA but not one of the fandom wide comps, then it still qualifies.
If you have a Tumblr account you can post your list there as well, just use the tag âtmnttoothorn19â so that people can find you. PLEASE list all of your eligible works, not just the Mature works. Â The Toot Your Own Horn will cover both competitions and you wouldnât want anything to be left out - you worked hard on those creations!

Tooting My Own Horn!
This is my entry for this yearâs Toot Your Own Horn! Though the event is dateless as of now, this applies to the @tmnt-universal-fanfic-comp (UFFC), as well as the @affatmntfan (AFFA). Fics are separated according to their rating with erotica equating to explicit. Some of these are eligible for the UFFC while others are not, the same goes for the AFFA.
All of my fics can be found here:Â https://archiveofourown.org/users/PrincessGemma12/works
You can contact me on Fanfiction.net, Discord: PrincessGemma12#1461, or here on Tumblr.

Sharp Tooth - Romance/Hurt/Comfort, OT4 and RLR.
Erotica
Some of these may not be eligible for the AFFAâsuch cases will be labeled appropriately. Not all of these are specifically erotica storiesâbut all feature sexual content at some point or another.
Laser Tagging *On Hiatus* - Erotica/Kink/Dub-con/Humor, RLR with minor relationships in the background. May be more fitting for the AFFA Mature Ballot.
Fic Ideas (TMNT Edition) - Shorts playing with story ideas, some feature sex and others donât. This entry focuses on chapters two and three (Dada Raph and Angel) which are both RLR, humor/erotica. This may or may not be eligible for either competition.
Apprehension - Foot!Raph/Drama/Humor/Romance/Dark/Erotica, RLR with plenty of other pairings. May or may not be eligible for AFFA.
Can I give completely unsolicited advice to fantasy writers that I wish someone had given me when I was into fantasy writing? The cliche âwrite what you knowâ is bad advice if taken literally, itâs how we get books about depressed middle-aged creative writing professors who contemplate having an affair. But generally speaking it can be helpful. Tolkien wrote a medieval fantasy because he was the worldâs foremost expert on medieval English literature. His book about Beowulf is still considered academically significant. He gave every race detailed languages because he was also a linguist. He wrote about giant battles because he was traumatized by his time in World War I and wrote during World War II. You donât have to do any of this because that isnât you. You are allowed to write a whole fantasy epic without a single battle (or you can make battle scenes modern urban melees because clashes of great armies arenât a thing anymore.) If, say, youâre really into fashion, feel free to describe in painstaking detail every outfit that elves wear for all possible occasions. I promise you itâs no weirder than describing the dialects of tree people. What Iâm saying is, youâre not Tolkien and thatâs a very good thing because your voice is needed more. Let your freak flag fly and make the world that comes from you specifically.
Oh. Oh this is SOLID F*ING GOLDEN ADVICE! Take this advice and remember it over and over and over andâ
And just fucking soak in it, because this is whatâs gonna make your story, amazing.
âYour voice is needed more.â Letâs be the writers of our generation.
Iâm using this as an excuse to write about the importance of alien infrastructure
Also, as an avid reader, I GREATLY enjoy when I can tell the author is like REALLY REALLY into woodworking or sailing or fashion or infrastructure or anything like that. I can tell when the author puts their passion of the thing in the story and I go âOh ho! Really into embroidery, are we? Tell me more!â
Please please please put all your passions in to the writing. Your readers will love it.Â
@glorious_spoonâs tags:Â #not necessarily âwrite what you knowâ#but âwrite what you loveâ#write whatâs meaningful to *you* instead of trying to copy genre conventions or famous writers

Writing with Color: Description Guide - Words for Skin Tone
We discussed the issues describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of âSo, if foodâs not an option, what can I use?â Well, I was just getting to that!
This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions weâve received on this topic.
So letâs get to it.
S T A N D A R DÂ D E S C R I P T I O N
B a s i c C o l o r s
Pictured above: Black, Brown, Beige, White, Pink.
âShe had brown skin.â
This is a perfectly fine description that, while not providing the most detail, works well and will never become clichĂŠ.
Describing charactersâ skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though itâs not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.
C o m p l e x C o l o r s
These are more rarely used words that actually âmeanâ their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so youâll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.
Pictured above: Umber, Sepia, Ochre, Russet, Terra-cotta, Gold, Tawny, Taupe, Khaki, Fawn.
Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.
For example: Golden brown, russet brown, tawny beigeâŚ
As some of these are on the ârareâ side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.
âHe was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.â
Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:
âHis skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.â
M o d i f i e r sÂ
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word. The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.
D a r k - D e e p - R i c h - C o o l
W a r m - M e d i u m - T a n
F a i r - L i g h t - P a l e
Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pinkâŚ
If youâre looking to get more specific than âbrown,â modifiers narrow down shade further.
Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.
As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.
While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like âtanâ âfairâ and âlightâ do work alone; just note that tan is less likely to be taken for ânaturally tanâ and much more likely a tanned White person.
Calling someone âdarkâ as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)
U n d e r t o n e s
Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isnât just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.
Mentioning the undertones within a characterâs skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.
As shown, thereâs a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).
âA dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.â
âHe always looked as if heâd ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.â
Standard Description Passage
âFarahâs skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summerâs sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.â
-From my story âWhere Summer Endsâ featured in Strange Little Girls
Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.
Note my use of âfawnâ in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, itâs also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.
Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time Iâm no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.
C R E A T I V EÂ D E S C R I P T I O N
Whether compared to night-cast rivers or dayâs first lightâŚI actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.
Iâve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their âsmooth rose-tinged ivory skinâ, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.
Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where. Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if theyâre not even a secondary character.
Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight creative. But again, do whatâs good for your tale.
N A T U R AL Â S E T T I N G S - S K Y
Pictured above: Harvest Moon -Twilight, Fall/Autumn Leaves, Clay, Desert/Sahara, Sunlight - Sunrise - Sunset - Afterglow - Dawn- Day- Daybreak, Field - Prairie - Wheat, Mountain/Cliff, Beach/Sand/Straw/Hay.
Now before you run off to compare your heroineâs skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.
When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.
So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.
Also consider whose perspective youâre describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who canât stand the person.
âHer face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.â
âShe had a sandy complexion, smooth and tawny.â
Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.
F L O W E R S
Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose
It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didnât have a 20 character name or wasnât called something like âchocolate silkâ so these are the finalists.Â
Youâll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.
Also be aware of flowers that most mightâve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.
âHe entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?â
A S S O R T E D Â P L A N T S & Â N A T U R E
Pictured above: Cattails, Seashell, Driftwood, Pinecone, Acorn, Amber
These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because Iâve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.
At least theyâre common enough that most may have an idea what youâre talking about at the mention of âpinecone."Â
I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how itâll sounds.
"Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.â
I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.
I donât suggest using a comparison just âcuz you canâ but actually being thoughtful about what youâre comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.
W O O D
Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash
Wood can be an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having âfoodyâ terminology within their names, but again, associations.
Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure itâs appropriate to the character if you do use it.
âThe old warlockâs skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.â
M E T A L S
Pictured above: Platinum, Copper, Brass, Gold, Bronze
Copper skin, brass-colored skin, golden skinâŚ
Iâve even heard variations of these used before by comparison to an object of the same properties/coloring, such as penny for copper.
These also work well with modifiers.
âThe dress of fine white silks popped against the deep bronze of her skin.â
G E M S T O N E S - M I N E R A LS
Pictured above: Onyx, Obsidian, Sard, Topaz, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Pyrite, Citrine, Gypsum
These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.
If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually âfitsâ the book or scene.
Even if youâre able to get us to picture what ârutileâ looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.
âHis skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.âÂ
P H Y S I C A LÂ D E S C R I P T I ON
Physical character description can be more than skin tone.
Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, handsâŚbody posture, body shape, skin texture⌠though not necessarily all of those nor at once.
Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as afro hair to a Black character.
How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldnât overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspotsâŚ
G E N E R A LÂ T I P S
Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.
Get Creative On Your Own:Â Obviously, I couldnât cover every proper color or comparison in which has been âapprovedâ to use for your charactersâ skin color, so itâs up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.
Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isnât always enough to indicate someoneâs ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to âdark whiteâ or something, more indicators of race may be needed.
Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your white characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you donât, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the âOtherâ).
PSA: Donât use âColored.â Based on some asks weâve received using this word, Iâd like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color âcoloredâ please.Â
Not Sure Where to Start? You really canât go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. Itâs actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.
Want some alternatives to âskinâ or âskin colorâ? Try: Appearance, blend, blush, cast, coloring, complexion, flush, glow, hue, overtone, palette, pigmentation, rinse, shade, sheen, spectrum, tinge, tint, tone, undertone, value, wash.

âComparisonsâ UPDATE
From now until further notice, my genderbender tmnt2012 series Comparisons will be on hiatus. I HAVE NOT abandoned it, simply caught some writers block in regards to the current story. For those of you following this series, I greatly apologize, but I have a few other stories that are my top priority right now. You can find info for them on my writeblr @the-magic-typewriter, and here on my main, under the âmy writingâ tag.

FUCK THIS I SPERFECT, IT SHOWS THE ARM PRONATING AND ALL THE MUSCLES SHIFTING ALONG WITH THE WRIST
IT EVEN HIGHLIGHTS THE ULNA BONE Â
HEY THIS IS THE ULTIMATE ANATOMY REF, FUCK THOSE MISLEADING TERRIBLE FUCKING âANATOMYâ TUTORIALS THAT GOEAS AROUND TUMBLR, THIS IS ALL OYU NEED, LOOK AT THE LATISIMUS STRETCHING OVER THE SERRATUS, THE PECTORAL MUSCLE MOVESUPWARDS AND OVER THE BICEP AND EXTENDS Â ALONG WITH THE ARM THERES EVEN THE CORACOBRACHIALIS;. AAAA OMFG IâM SO HAPPYYYYYY
Admin Kin here: This is one of the most helpful references in our library, but I wondered if any of our followers might be able to help identify the color coded muscles? It would be great to be able to know what is what while practicing from these sheets!
Sure, @anatomicalart! The colors get reused between the arm/back angles so Iâll separate them.
Arm view: Red = Deltoids (all three heads are in one color) Blue = Latissimus Dorsi Green = Biceps Brachii Yellow = Triceps Brachii
Forearm: Red = One of the wrist flexors Blue = Brachioradialis
Back view, left side: Red = Deltoids (all three heads are in one color) Blue = Latissimus Dorsi Green = Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, Teres Major Yellow = Trapezius (all groups one color)
Back view, right side: Red = Supraspinatus Blue = Serratus Anterior Green = Rhomboids Yellow = Levator ScapulaeÂ
Not an artist, I just like cool stuff.
Hold up: this is important
The identification of muscles is probably helpful for writers, too.
I think another problem with the mindset of kudos/comments on AO3 is part of the âstalkingâ culture on instagram. If you like a picture that is months old on instagram, its âinsta-stalkingâ because you had to scroll through that personâs profile in order to find those months-old pictures. That is NOT how AO3 works. Itâs not cringe or embarrassing to find a fic that was posted in 2012 and like it. It is there to read.Â
Same for works on AO3. Sure, maybe some of us have some old works that arenât up to our current standards of writing. But I, personally, am never going to look at a kudos email and think âew omg I canât believe someone found this fic from 2016 why are they liking itâ. In fact, I am entirely going to go ânice! people are still reading some of my older works too, Iâm glad they enjoyed itâ. Itâs an archive, it is meant to be a collection of transformative works, old and new, and you are meant to find them.Â
In fact, if you find a work that is from five years ago and you really liked it? I bet the author would love a comment even then.
Stories are written to be read.Â
Show some appreciation.
Writers write to be read!
Older stories need love just as new ones. Please donât let stories and chapters die of neglect after one fucking week!
I got a comment a couple of months ago for a nearly-10-years-old crackfic and I was thrilled!Â
Part of why thereâs sortable searches at AO3 is to let you find fics for a now-dormant fandom, fics that are no longer canon-compliant after the new episodes, fics that work with fanon tropes that are no longer popular, fics from authors who are no longer actively writing⌠and just fics that werenât written recently.Â
Comments on old fics are great! Often, they bring back a rush of memories for the author - oh wow, I remember when I was obsessing about this fandom, how much I loved this pairing, the fics I read that inspired this fic!Â

One of those fandom things that I love is when thereâs new characters around and, with the unwavering confidence of an old farmer appraising cattle, fanfic authors take one good look at them, tilt their imaginary hat, and go âAye. Praise kink, that one. Mighty case of praise kink if I ever saw one.â And everyone else just âaye.â
Not to mention the plot tropes.
âI donât think the Highschool AU is going to come in too strong this year. Fandoms a touch jaded for that. But the hurt/comfort is growinâ thick as weeds and twice as fast. Itâll be a good harvest, fer sure.â
