Please stop making posts discouraging people from voting, especially if you don't live in the US. This isn't your fight, and you seem to think it doesn't matter who wins to you anyway. Let those of us who won't survive another Trump term deal with it. Hi. Me. Anarchist and socialist ideals are cool and all, but I won't get to be a part of them because I'll be fucking dead. This is not an exaggeration. I am 26 and I expect to be dead in 2-3 years if Trump wins. If Biden wins not only will I survive, but I will have the energy to fight his old racist ass on every awful thing he does.
Hey guess what: Trump has plans to eliminate Disability next year. He has the authority to do it by the method he is choosing.
Biden plans to expand Disability, increasing the amount you receive as well as granting ACTUAL MARRIAGE EQUALITY FOR DISABLED PEOPLE
I had to call off my engagement so that I can apply for Disability, but if Trump wins it won't even matter because Disability won't exist this time next year.
The idea that there is no difference between Trump and Biden is co-morbid with apathy for your disabled comrades. If Trump wins, I will probably lose access to my medications and be forced to work so my family can survive. The problem is that literally any job can and will kill me. I don't expect to make it halfway through 2023 if Trump wins the election. And that's just me. How many thousands or tens of thousands or more are in my situation? How many hundreds of thousands are WORSE OFF than I am?
Vote blue so there is a politician in office who we can actually fight on his bullshit. Don't stop protesting. Don't stop calling and writing. Push for the end of gerrymandering and the electoral college. But make sure your Disabled friends and loved ones are there to see the future you're trying to create.
and it has its right paw up! the correct paw for this.
and from the markings on its ears, it looks like it might be a calico cat. which is the luckiest kind!
Y’know I reblogged this a bit ago and was saved from financial probation and getting kicked out of school because of it, just mere months from graduation. Got a call from the financial aid advisor telling me that they made a mistake with filing my account (or some other sort of clerical error) and said that, basically, they owe me money. Welp.
hi tumblr-the conservative party is back at it again.
currently, the GRA (gender recognition act) says to transition “legally”, trans people have to:
get two diagnoses of gender dysphoria (including one from an NHS gender clinic, which have a 2-3 year wait time currently),
prove you have lived as your chosen gender for 2 years,
swear to live the remainder of your life as such
and do all of this in front of a “gender recognition panel”, a process which is very humiliating and largely depends on people deciding if you are “trans enough”.
in 2018, the idea was put on the table to progress the rights of transgender people in the UK. Including:
allowing them to self identify as their chosen gender (including 16 & 17 year olds, who have previously been denied the right to)
demedicalising the transition progress, no doctors would need to diagnose gender dysphoria to transition.
removing the cost to have your gender legally recognised
allow non-binary identities to be recognised
it has recently been leaked that the current government has scrapped these ideas [source source]. Our equality minister, Liz Truss, is horribly transphobic and wishes to backpedal on the few rights we have.
trans people have said for years that the GRA is outdated and in need of reform, and have had the tiny ray of hope that it may be changed ripped out from under us behind closed doors.
petitions on the parliament website are legally obligated to be responded to at 10k signatures and have to be debated in parliament at 100k signatures.
only british citizens can sign this, but if you are not from the uk, please boost it so your british followers can see!
It’s so fucking weird to see Tubby on my dash from just like a random unrelated blog I follow. That’s just my best friends’ cat. I commissioned a plate painted with her likeness.
Instead of guilting young people into community action and making voting seem almost useless, how bout we share some resources about how to vote and overwhelmingly encourage doing so as soon as possible, hm?
If you're not sure where to start with voting this year - either bc it's your first time or bc you usually vote on E-Day in person and now that may be an option, or bc you're intimidated by structural barriers - here's a good place to start:
A trend I’ve been seeing among non-voters is that “direct action” is more important than voting, but more often than not, the people who make these claims don’t even partake in any form of direct action.
If you do nothing but spew anarchist bullshit, then you’re not helping anyone. If you actually care about the state of our country, should AT THE VERY LEAST vote. It’s common sense.
Ok, so you know how JKR has a new, very transphobic book coming out? Well it is being published by Little, Brown, and Company, a company within Hatchette Book Group. Their customer service email is [email protected] . If you wanted to tell them that you feel JKR is making them look bad and that you think that they would be better off not giving her a platform if they want to be well liked and purchased from, that is who to email. Please be polite if you do. I dont want to be responsible for ruining some poor customer service worker’s day.
It’s probably worth actually contacting the UK office of Hachette, since they’re who’ll actually be publishing it, I suspect.
Conveniently, their contact page has not only their UK details, but also contact details for other offices, such as their Australian office: https://www.hachette.co.uk/landing-page/hachette/contact-us/
Having a quick click through to the Little, Brown UK website, I notice they have a ‘Little, Brown Pride’ feature on their front page, which includes queer and trans books they publish, such as Trans Like Me by CN Lester. It might be worth pointing out the dissonance between that and supporting a vocally transphobic author like Rowling by agreeing to publish her book.
Worth pointing out that STAFF at the publisher are not very happy with JKR’S recent works and have been making that clear to management, so adding pressure from the customer end might be helpful if you have the time.
sorry for all of my tss follower homepages i’m putting this on- this’ll be the last rb i swear
premise is, the staff at the publishing company has to choose between their jobs and boycotting this book and speaking out against it. and jkr put them in that situation. if anyone needs the link, it’s in the rb above this one. i don’t want the staff to be caught in the middle of this, i know i wouldn’t want to be, so take that into consideration
me wearing a dog collar and leash looking up at my manfriend in his trench coat and fedora: let’s go out in public where you can walk me like i’m a dog in front of people who are visibly uncomfortable
Anyway, with regards to the original post, what would actually be wrong with that? There’s no mention of public nudity, nor of treating the human pet in a way that would be considered strange for a dog.
Should people be obliged to modify their behaviour so that the irrationally prejudicial do not experience discomfort?
Okay… just please consider the following scenario.
It’s five to ten years from now. You’re sitting in a restaurant, enjoying a lovely meal, when I walk in, accompanied by my wife, my children, and my human pet (whose genitals are covered as it enters on all fours and is wearing underpants).
If my family and I then make an order of our own at the table next to you, in what way have we infringed upon your freedom? What rational basis do you have to demand that we leave or beloved pet at home?
H*ck it all, let’s consider a more extreme scenario. It’s five to ten years from now. You’re sitting in a restaurant, enjoying a lovely meal, when I walk in, without my wife and children (for whatever reason, they haven’t accompanied me), with my surgically modified human pet (wearing a collar) being lead in by it’s leash.
My pet has been spayed/neutered (though you can’t tell because its genitals -along with its boobies if its a female- have been covered up), it has no vocal chords, and it walks on all fours not by choice, but because its toes have been removed, along with the tendons in its ankles being severed (it may also have had its thumbs and the last two segments of each finger amputated, making it easier to care for -no fingernails to trim-). Perhaps I’ve even (humanely) removed its eyes, making it less independent.
Even in this scenario, I haven’t infringed upon your liberties.
“Irrationally prejudiced” is precisely what you are.
So I was looking at Biden’s plans to help people with disabilities. Here’s some stuff he wants to do that would make a big, measurable difference:
- Increasing SSI benefits to at least 100% of the Federal Poverty Line (at the moment, this would be an increase of about $3000/year. That would be REALLY HELPFUL.)
- Increase the asset limits for SSI and SSDI - which haven’t been increased in more than 35 years. Right now if you have more than $2000 at any time, you lose your benefits.
- Marriage equality for disabled people! - For people on SSI be able to get married without losing our benefits! (As it stands right now, you can lose your benefits even if they suspect you’re ACTING like you’re married - the “holding out as married” rule.)
I’m about out of spoons tonight, but go read it! If even SOME of it gets passed, it could be really good!
This is in contrast to the Republican position, which is *checks notes* “If they’re going to die, they’d better do it, and decrease the surplus population”.
(Seriously, if Trump gets re-elected, I, and many other disabled people, will be so entirely fucked. He wants to destroy Social Security, I would be homeless and starving in the streets.)
every time you say that there’s no difference between trump and biden, every time you say that voting is pointless, every time you say that you won’t vote for the lesser of two evils, you’re saying that disabled lives don’t matter.
JKR’s new book announcement should not surprise you. It should not shock you. And I don’t mean that like, oh she’s been racist and horrible before so this is nothing new.
No. I mean that this is 100% intentional and reactionary. This is in direct response the backlash she got for being transphobic trash. She’s doing this because she’s digging her heels in and doubling down on her bullshit. This is PR 101, causing outrage to get people to pay attention to her.
So what we are not going to fucking do is give this woman a single fucking penny. We’re not giving her the fucking time of day. I do not want to see discourse posts in however many months’ time when the book comes out. There doesn’t need to be discourse because we fucking know already that it’s trash. This book and this author need to die with a whimper.
hey so here’s a concept: being.. neurodivergent..... doesn’t exempt you from consuming media critically......... just because you’re hyperfixated on something doesn’t mean you’re allowed to completely ignore its flaws.
Just learned that Caster Semenya lost her legal battle and I’m so fucking sad. this is such a huge loss for intersex people in sports and sets a real fucking dangerous precedent that essentially excludes all intersex people from participating in sports unless they go through (unconsensual) HRT. the blatent racism and intersexism that the court is showing is fucking despicable and I’m so fucking upset.
i’m also really fucking suspicious that the ONLY people talking about intersexism in the context of this legal descision are intersex people. even when this is BLATENTLY and obviously intersexist like, perisex people refuse to recognize it. and that’s fucking disappointing. i know there isn’t much awareness or solidairty with us, but still. it’s not a big ask to ask y’all to do the bare minimum of explicitly calling intersexism out for what it is. perisex people fucking do better.
@ Everyone who has ever talked about Caster Semenya in the context of transgender medicine and sports: you are obligated to pay attention to this in the context of intersex medicine and social lives because this is an intersex issue before it’s a trans issue.
For as many posts you make about transgender lives being impacted by these rulings I and my intersex peers expect you to do double for intersex lives. The fact that intersex people are expected to take hormones to make them closer to dyadic bodies in order to “compete fairly” in sports while athletes like Michael Phelps who have natural low lactic acid production are allowed to compete “fairly” when having an Actual Natural Advantage in terms of physiology is nothing short of intersexist. The fact that they are specifically doing this to Caster Semenya is where the racism and intersexism intersect - putting a black woman on the spot like this for her intersex condition is cruel and senseless and nobody deserves to be put in this position, especially not Caster.
A ruling by the Swiss Supreme Court appears to have nixed any chance for the South African star to defend her title in her signature event a
“Caster Semenya of South Africa, the two-time Olympic track champion with a rare genetic condition that significantly elevated her testosterone levels, on Tuesday lost what appeared to be her final appeal to compete at 800 meters, her signature event, at the postponed Tokyo Olympics next summer. Semenya’s natural testosterone levels are far above the “standard” female range.
The World Athletics, track’s governing body, had passed regulations in 2018 stating that intersex athletes who have a disorder of sexual development and have both X and Y chromosomes, the standard male pattern, would have to lower their testosterone levels to keep competing in women’s events from the quarter mile to the mile, which combine speed and endurance.
World Athletics has acknowledged that its regulations were discriminatory but said they were necessary to preserve a level playing field in women’s events. Intersex athletes with testosterone in the male range, the governing body argued, have an unfair advantage in lean muscle mass, strength and oxygen-carrying capacity. The lowest level in the male testosterone range is four times greater than the highest level in the women’s range, according to the governing body.
In issuing its final ruling on Tuesday, the Swiss Supreme Court said that CAS had “the right to uphold the conditions of participation issued for female athletes with the genetic variant 46 XY DSD in order to guarantee fair competition for certain running disciplines in female athletics.”
The Swiss court claimed that Semenya’s “guarantee of human dignity” was not undermined in agreeing that an athlete’s biological characteristics may supersede a person’s gender identity to protect fair competition.
The outcome of Semenya’s case has been widely anticipated for a number of reasons, including the separate issue of transgender athletes who have transitioned from male to female and whether they possess residual physical advantages that might be unfair.
It has been expected that, after the Tokyo Games, the International Olympic Committee will adopt the same testosterone limits for transgender athletes that World Athletics has imposed on intersex athletes.
Semenya, 29, is cisgender and intersex, and identifies as a woman. According to doctors, people with the 46 XY disorder of sexual development have genitalia that are not typically male or female and can be ambiguous.
Semenya has faced intense scrutiny in her sport for more than a decade. She has refused to undergo hormone therapy to comply with the current regulations.
In a statement on Tuesday, Semenya said, “I am very disappointed by this ruling, but refuse to let World Athletics drug me or stop me from being who I am. Excluding female athletes or endangering our health solely because of our natural abilities puts World Athletics on the wrong side of history.”
Semenya said she would continue to fight for the human rights of female athletes “until we can all run free the way we were born.”
She has suggested that she would attempt to run the 200 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, an event that is not governed by the testosterone restrictions, but lawyers for Semenya said she was still considering her legal options.
One of her attorneys, Dorothee Schramm, who led Semenya’s appeal, said in a statement, “This decision is a call to action — as a society, we cannot allow a sports federation to override the most fundamental of human rights.”
Semenya’s supporters include the World Medical Association, which has requested that doctors not implement the World Athletics regulations, questioning the ethics and potential harm of requiring athletes to take hormone therapy not based on medical need.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has also called for the regulations to be revoked. Human Rights Watch has called the regulations “stigmatizing, stereotyping and discriminatory,” saying they amount to “policing of women’s bodies on the basis of arbitrary definitions of femininity and racial stereotypes.”
Not to get dark or anything, but 9/11 is coming up in the USA
Or, let me rephrase that: an annual day where Muslims in the USA are scared to leave their homes. If you have Muslim friends or neighbors - watch their backs. Check up on them. Without fail, every year, there's always an attack. Every year someone I know or someone I know by extension becomes a victim.
One year I had to go pick up my roommate from the library because she was too scared to leave. Some grown ass men had followed her there throwing rocks and yelling threats.
Another year I got a knife threat slipped into my mailbox.
Another year someone shot up the side of our mosque while we prayed for peace inside.
Check up on your neighbors and call out racist and islamophobic behavior where you see it. This year, with all the unrest and elections coming up, it's bound to be bad and everyone I know is already on edge and taking precautions.
The majority of Muslims in the USA aren't even immigrants or Pakistani, or Indonesian or anything else - the highest percentage is actually African American.
Given the political climate and recent surge in violence - protect your neighbors, and protect black Muslims especially!!!!!
