When the shelter was first constructed, very little digging was required. The cave system had always existed, simply reinforced with steel and concrete. The deeper tunnels were sealed off. If you place your hands against the walls of these dead-end hallways, you might notice that the stone is twice or in some cases even three times as thick as the concrete used in other parts of the shelter. Whatever lies in those old, dank tunnels, it was clear the old folks had no interest in ever seeing it again.

I wanted to talk about Toothless and how his design and personality changed for the worst throughout the 3 animated movies (I won't be tackling any of the shows because I haven't watched them)

In the first movie he's at his best. His design is actually amazing, from the overall model structure to the patterns on his skin (which are visible in every shot, especially the ones taking place during the day, without ruining the 'illusion' of his black skin. It actually feels like it's resembling a panther aka black leopard in which the fur patterns are still visible). His face has a more aerodynamic shape, more sharp, a big curve.

His snarky but intelligent personality was really fitting for him. And we got to see more of it as the movie was progressing and he was getting more comfortable with humans.

In the second movie the patterns on his skin are still mostly there, way less prominent but still visible. His face got squashed down (a problem which only because stronger in the 3rd movie) but as a whole he still looks presentable, kinda. His posture changed too (but I'm too lazy to find evidence, you'll have to take my word for it).

I remember not having a problem with his personality in the second movie which is why I was surprised to see that this was only half true. He acts more domesticated, that's to be expected, but only around humans? When he interacts with other dragons it's like he's a completely different character, closer to what he became in httyd 3 than 1. He's still quite intelligent and more used to human equipment and people in general. In the first part of the film (especially this scene with Hiccup) he acts like how I'd imagine he should be in the 3rd movie, here it should have been a 'middle' ground, not 100% domesticated but not movie 1 feral either.

In the third movie he suffered the worst. Gone are the patterns on his skin, he's solid black now. His face got weirder too.

His personality got reduced to this stupid, slobbering 'dog'. His pupils are always dilated and his tongue almost constantly out. He acts unintelligent and he doesn't have that snarky personality he had in the first and even the second movie. He's basically a different character altogether. (That scene where he tries to 'woo' the light fury is embarrassing at best and shows exactly what's wrong with his character now).

They did it to make him more 'likable' to younger audiences + to make a good visual contrast to the light fury (who has an undercooked personality AND awful design as well), which is weird because they gave the light fury patterns on her wings?

The light fury looks like a beluga whale in the worst way possible. She has almost nothing going on visually to the point it doesn't even make sense. Her skin looks fragile, she's so weirdly smooth for no reason. It would legit be better if they took a night fury model and painted it white.

They gave her a 'cat' personality and took it away from Toothless (why couldn't both be 'cats'?). Also she's the 'girl' character, her only purpose is to be the romantic interest. She adds nothing to the film.

No comment in the live action design. Just ugly. Atrocious even.

Also something else that's been bothering me from the live action remake is this scene.

They've basically recreated every scene exactly as it was in the original so far (which is a bad thing) but the slight hesitation Toothless showed before touching Hiccups hand was the one thing they chose not to include? (I know the scene wasn't meant to have that in the beginning and it was an error in animation which they decided to keep because it gave the scene more personality so, why not include it in the live action?)

let’s start off with the characterization. first, hiccup. where did that pathetic little freakazoid from httyd 1 go??? where did his sass go?? why is he just a cookie cutter stereotypical hero now?????? and i’ll talk about the fact that he just let toothless go later.

fishlegs- it’s been a while since i watched this movie, and if im being perfectly honest i don’t remember much about him in it. but im pretty sure he was kind of just there, yk? like he wasn’t as anxious or funny or nerdy or caring or sensible as he was before. he just seemed kind of bland to me.

snotlout. this fucker. this little bitchboy. he was done so fucking dirty in this movie. why was he so pathetic???? like yeah i get making him mess up occasionally cause haha funny comedic relief. but like. he’s not helpless???? like this is the kid who was literally trained to be the perfect picture of a viking his whole life. he’s the model viking. this is the kid who single handedly took down multiple full grown outcasts on their own island with nothing but a small metal rod and spite at the age of fifteen. he won every thawfest game for years! he’s a good fighter! he’s not useless. and his personality???? GOD. WHAT THE FUCK. why is he flirting with valka, someone who is much older than him and widely viewed (out of canon) to be his aunt??? why the fuck would he say “who died and made you chief?”????? he cried at stoicks funeral! yeah, maybe he would’ve been that much of a dick in the first movie, but there have been three shows, one movie, four(?) shorts, and multiple comics since then!! he’s has so much character growth that they just threw away because haha funny. also his beef with eret was completely unnecessary like even when he was beefing with dagur at least there was some previous thing that started it. his beef with eret just came out of nowhere??

and astrid. they just turned her into the stereotypical hero’s wife. where did her personality go???? and i get the symbolization of her hair progressively getting looser as she gets less uptight and chills out and matures but like… i miss her fuckass emo bangs. give them back. her whole character isn’t supposed to exist solely to support hiccup so why is that the only thing she does in the hidden world???? justice for my girl

now. the twins. oh boy do i have some opinions here.

starting strong with the fact that he loses his own twin sister who shares a whole dragon with him. then there’s his whole beard thing, which like, isn’t entirely out of character but it sure as fuck wasn’t in character either. now let’s circle back to losing ruffnut. because WHAT THE FUCK TUFF. and then when he realizes she’s gone he just says he’s more worried about her captors?????? DUDE. BRO. MY MAN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TUFFNUT WHO FAKED HIS OWN DEATH JUST SO THAT HIS SISTER WOULDNT FEEL PRESSURED TO STAY FKR HIM. WHAT HAPLENED TO THE TUFFNUT WHO, WHILE STUCK IN A DRAGON TRAP IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, HAD AN ENTIRE IMPROMPTU CONVERSATION WITH BARF ABOUT HOW RUFFNHT MAY FEEL TRAPPED AS A WOMAN IN A MANS WORLD. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE TUFFNUT WHO LOST HIS GODDAMN MIND WHEN RUFFNUT GOT CAPTURED??? WHAT HAPLENED TO THE TUFFNUT WHO HAD WHOLE ASS HUNTERS RUNNING FROM HIM SCREAMING BECAUSE THEY CAPTURED HIS SISTER???? “that’s my sister out there, astrid. and if this goes wrong, and we don’t save her, i couldn’t live with myself” MY FUCKING ASS. just like snotlout, he was so uncharacteristically insensitive it was insane.

WHAT???? what happened to my girl who faked a breakdown to steal a key from a guard??? what happened to the ruffnut who is constantly giving hiccup inspiration for new inventions????? the fuck do you mean you never look back???? and the fact that she thought she annoyed grimmel into letting her go?? come on ruff. you’re better than that.

and speaking of grimmel. what was that weak ass villain???? dude was just a normal guy. even johann was more intimidating than him. you will never be viggo grimborn. bitch.

first of all, they flattened his nose. he’s so squished now. on top of that, they rounded his head more, gave him much more prominent brow bones, and pushed his eyes entirely too close together and made them SO square. he’s supposed to look sleek and scary, not boxy and nonthreatening.

and why is he acting like a horny dog??? he’s literally never done that before. the slobbering, and dancing with his own shadow, and ditching hiccup without a second thought was so not like him, and not in a “he’s in love” way. it was in a “the writers don’t know the character” way.

and the fact that he left hiccup once he got his tail????? there was an entire short (gift of the night fury) dedicated to hiccup giving toothless an automatic tail and toothless saying he didn’t want it, he wanted hiccup. be so fucking for real rn dreamworks.

Also, the Light Fury.

Oh my god, I practically feel so bad for her because all she is a fucking black slate. She is a semi-aquatic cave dragon? Nuh uh, creators wanna be dumbasses and debunk that, saying her only purpose is reproduction and being a girlfriend to Toothless. She is abused? Nope, the creators go even fucking farther and say that she is just a “wild dragon 🥺” that attacks humans because that behavior is normal and natural for a wild dragon apparently, and it isn’t fueled by trauma nor abuse.

Dreamworks.

DOES HOOKFANG NOT EXIST?!

I swear, everyone forgets about him when they try to justify the Light Fury by saying her wildness is an excuse for her attacking humans, yet it isn’t! Hookfang was an abused, and scared wild dragon and yet he still trusts human without being a little whiny bitch about it like the fucking Light Fury! Hookfang was also fucking put in a unfamiliar environment, the arena, and yet he doesn’t try to play hard to get because he wants to to impress a male that is associated with humans, her worst fear!

Seriously, what I always wondered is why the Light Fury just doesn’t go the fuck home, considering she has a wide open window when she flies off from Toothless and I really doubt she would put her home above a random male Night Fury who clearly is being a sloppy puppy and she has never seen a Night Fury before! I can understand being curious, but curiosity only goes so far, and why risk it when the said Night Fury lives in a camp full of HUMANS? At some times, I really doubt this Light Fury is afraid of humans because of this, because she has literally has a on and off switch like a robot doll for her fear of humans. One time, she’ll be snarling and blasting at Hiccup for him to get away, but also wander on a camp full of them which could hurt her or even worse, do things to her such as whipping or muzzling like she was just earlier in a completely unfamiliar environment she has never seen before because she has never gone outside! While she wasn’t whipped, it would certainly be traumatic for any individual dragon who has never seen such things before and have very little human contact before this interaction to go through this, so why keep coming back?

Why does she? Is there any excuse? Does it state that in the film?

The main excuse people use is that she assumes Toothless is enslaved, and that’s why she keeps coming back in order to free him. This Light Fury, whatever the hell she is, maybe even a blobfish for all I care, doesn’t even KNOW what enslavement is. As stated in the art book itself, her primary home is the Hidden World, and she has had very little human contact before that, most likely that she has never seen the outside besides from stories and brief glimpses that she probably doesn’t remember. So… if she doesn’t believe he’s enslaved or under the influence of something, why does she just not go? Why does she not leave him here?

Oh, right, let me check my notes, Grimmel states in the film Furies mate for life, and that’s why she never leaves him behind, because she has formed such a emotional connection in under a few fucking minutes of knowing a strange Night Fury who defends humans and has a tailfin that is red, strange gear on, and also not very happy at her shooting at the very humans she fears. There is no way such an emotionally intelligent species would just… mate on the spot, because if a species is that intelligent, you would expect them to get to know their mate and what to expect in order to know what they can bring to the table.

Plus, while some animals that do mate for life form instant connections with their mates and know they are right then, Toothless already rises above normal instinctual action by bonding with the one who disabled him in the first place, while the Light Fury doesn’t know that. She just woke up from likely being in a cage for a few days, and now she is encountering what looks to be one of her kind, yet quite isn’t and he also is very associated with humans and even protects them. The Light Fury, already established as skittish as later on even by Hiccup in the film would likely flee back to her home, considering it wasn’t that far to begin with, and then be safe there, no matter how curious she would be of a Night Fury at first who later growls at her to stop blasting.

We aren’t gonna go over the Hidden World isn’t really safe after all or the fact the ending goes against the entire franchise that it has built upon brick by brick, or the fact the producers slap you in the face by saying Hicctooth is less important than Hiccstrid when they are both important.

In conclusion: the Light Fury sucks, both as a love interest and whatever else she is.

I think a big reason why the dragons leaving in HTTYD 3/THW does not work is that the dragons are not shown to be unhappy with the humans.

It works in the books as we are shown that the dragons' living conditions are not good and that they are unhappy, so unhappy that there was a peaceful protest in the past, then in book 9 onwards, a dragon rebellion which leads to an all-out war because the dragons were unhappy. The dragons in the books have agency and are actively fighting against the humans. We also know that a good majority of humans were enslaving dragons or, in some way the power dynamic had the human in charge (including Berk at the start.)

It really was only Hiccup (and some others like Fishlegs and Camacazi) that treated dragons with respect.

The most we are shown in HTTYD 3/THW are that the dragons enslaved by the villains are likely unhappy (but we just assume that as it isn't really shown) (I'm ignoring the series for now) and that Toothless is having trouble deciding between Hiccup and the Light fury. Which, by the way, I hate the character has to choose between love interest and best friend troupe.

In the books, the dragons that were happy with their human stayed until the human died. In HTTYD 3/THW, the dragons just left never to be seen again. The director apparently confirmed that Toothless does not think much about Hiccup by the time the epilogue rolls around. (Which come on. Are you really going to reduce the friendship so many people love and hold dear to that!?!?)

The dragons in HTTYD 3/THW have no agency, and it just makes them feel flat. They just go to Berk at the start when they are freed (It's never shown that some could have gone elsewhere. Although the argument could be made that nowhere is safe, they don't really show us much of the world or how bad the situation really is if it is bad.) They relocate with the humans and help them. Then they just leave when Toothless says to do so. (I also don't really like the idea of an Alpha because the Red Death is an example of how that power can be abused. But that is a rant for another time).

Funnily enough, the Light fury for her lack of character has the most agency. Toothless could count, but it feels like he either listens to Hiccup or the Light Fury. Aside from Toothless wanting to hook up with the Light Fury, the dragons do not express what they want. They seem pretty fine chilling with the humans (so I feel it is unfair that they have to follow Toothless. They could have chosen to stay or, if Toothless has control over them, then I might have to make my why I don't think Alphas are a good idea rant.)

This did devolve into a rant about the dragon's agency, but I don't see this point brought up nearly as it should be, so I am bringing it up. There could be plenty of things that are missing. I am writing this late at night and competently improvised this rant.

Collectively, THW was a fever dream that we all had across the globe and everyone just failed to realize it, that’s why it’s still talked about. This puts into words what I cannot, because it is so ridiculous that they want us to believe that this is a ending where the dragons will be safe for good when there is literally a boat in the Hidden World?!

Toothless is probably done with Hiccup’s bullshit 😭 First having to save him from fire and his tribe in the first movie, having to save him from nearly falling off a cliff in GOTNF, who knows how many times in the TV shows, and stand against ANOTHER Alpha dragon in the second. Toothless’s reaction here about his recklessness with flight maneuvers is honestly so hilarious I cannot, and Hiccup’s friends exactly know when a dumb idea is about to go wrong because Toothless himself has to deal with it!
