THEY GROW UP SO FAST

Imagine being stuck on the side of a mountain, and you suddenly see something cheerfully bounding up the rocky slopes towards you. It is a descendant of these robots.

“I’m here to rescue you,” says a polite robotic voice. A screen on its chest displays the words in several languages. A smaller screen on its head displays a smiling face. “Are you injured?”

“My ankle hurts,” you respond shakily. “I think I twisted it.”

“May I have permission to lift your body?” asks the robot. The screen on its chest displays bright green and red icons. “Say ‘YES’ or press the green button, or say ‘NO’ or press the red button.”

“Yes please,” you respond.

“Thank you.” Robotic arms reach down and lift you up with one surprisingly smooth, gentle motion. “Please fasten the safety harness before we continue.”

Lights on the robot’s body direct your eyes to straps resembling a seat belt, while the face and chest monitors display instruction for securing it. You hear a CLICK as you finish, and the straps pull you snugly to the robot’s frame.

“Thank you,” says the robot. “Adjusting center of gravity. One moment.”

After a brief moment, the robot stands a little straighter. “I will now begin to carry you to safety. If you begin to experience any dizziness or nausea, simply say ‘GENTLE MODE’ and I will adjust to a slower pace.”

The journey to safety and medical care is a short one, thanks to how quickly the robot navigates the treacherous terrain, yet the motion is so fluid you wonder if it was in gentle mode all along.
