I did a thing

A fellow @mourningcoffeediscord member encouraged me to do AdorkaStock's "Draw Everything" June.

So I did!

In this challenge, new poses are shared every weekday, so you end up drawing 22 different scenes. My drawings are below. Ask me anything lol 🤣.

So this was... very hard. 🤣 I would conservatively estimate the number of hours put in to the drawings above at 30. It was probably more like 40 or even 50. I didn't keep track, but most drawings took close to an hour, start to finish, and some (like that wretched cuddle puddle on Day 21) took more like three or four hours.

I didn't finish all of them to the same degree, and NONE of them are finished to the point that I'd be happy posting them as "my art". But I did finish all of them to the standards of the challenge.

Here's an enlarged version of the cuddle puddle. You can see my many mistakes better but also I spent so freaking long on this I would like someone to appreciate the things I did well:

Here's what I learned:

if you practice, you get better (haha ha haha... this one is here to remind future me)

work big to small -- as in don't get sucked into detailing that hand when you haven't got your proportions correct on the rest, because that hand is gonna move and you'll cry because you spent so much time on it

look. for. overall. shapes.

remember you're drawing in 3d (this got me out of so many traps when i'd get stuck trying to figure out where to put a line)

the liquify tool is a trap -- use very, very sparingly

I still kinda suck at estimating proportions by eye, but I did improve

There were lots of other small technical things I learned, like how to make a keyboard shortcut in Clip Studio Paint to toggle between pen and eraser. And one specific drawing skill I know I improved on a lot is drawing faces from different angles. I can... kind of just do that now? It used to be freakishly difficult. Also, foreshortened limbs are getting easier (still rather wretched, but better).

I would 100% do this again, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for ways to practice and learn!

every time someone says “look how they’re looking at each other! they’re in love!” about a non-canon ship i just think of the kuleshov effect for a second but then i come to my senses and decide to have fun

ok i’m going to explain the kuleshov effect because im a film student and its fascinating to me. basically its the principle of film storytelling that states that you can juxtapose a blank expression with an image and the audience will read a different emotion from the expression depending on the juxtaposed image. its incredibly interesting to me.

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this

I went down this rabbit hole looking for what people in the Middle Ages called their underwear. It was a challenge. So here are the ways I found what I needed:

Online, sometimes you can find seamstresses and tailors of cosplay or larp costumes, who do historical dress. The makers live or die by the authenticity of their work as a point of competition. So sometimes they link to the sources they used. try insta and pinterest.

You may also want to try “history of fashion,” “historical dress,” “history of costume,” etc search terms. You might get links to book publishers of huge historical dress tomes from publishers like Phaidon, Rizzoli, Taschen, the Metropolitan Musem’s Costume Institute (X).

Or try the most important fashion universities’ publications: Parsons (X), Central St. Martin’s (X), The F.I.T. (X) etc.

maybe i missed this in ur advice tag, but i adore how you draw and render hands! how do you simplify them? any tips for a novice?

Thank you! I'm really just following the most basic of "how-to-draw-hands" rulebooks and then making them sharp and sinewy as all hell. The only thing I think I do differently from most tutorials I've seen is including the wrist joint in the structure of the hand when I sketch it.

Disclaimer: I draw hands kinda messed up. I enjoy them that way. Your art teacher may not, LOL.

I couldn't find the caramelldansen base in this post, but here is a version that should work just as well.

How to make them into a GIF:

Step 1. Edit the base however you like (I used MSPaint)

Step 2: Crop and save each frame individually as PNGs (Note for the lick base: It's best to crop them to include the black boarder. This makes the GIF 50x50, which is the standard DeviantArt icon size and can easily scale larger if need be.)

Step 3: Go to ezgif.com/maker and upload all your frames

Step 4: Set "delay time" to 10, then click "Make a GIF!"

Step 5: Right-click the result and save it. Congrats! You used a GIF base!
