Badass male character: falls in love, gets married, has kids
Everyone: Aww thatâs cute, he deserves that after everything heâs been through.
Badass female character: falls in love, gets married, has kids
Everyone: WTF??!! Thatâs sooo out of character and just WROnG!! How can she just settle down after all the badass stuff sheâs done? Thatâs such a downgrade! She has literally killed the biggest villain and now she just changes diapers? Bad writing, anti-feminist, bad baD bAD BAAAD!!!!!!!!!!
neuroscientists: porn is fucking people up and we dont even know the half of it
research grant boards: yikes thats screwed up, do you have a solution?
neuroscientists: not really, its so deeply entrenched in modern culture and we dont even know where to start when it comes to untangling it. this is essentially uncharted territory
research grant boards: hmâŚ..cancel order *funds research on humans cumming in space* instead
In undergrad, I was told that itâs basically impossible to get funding on porn research because we know itâs so harmful. You can do correlational studies based on self-report, but you canât do experimental studies where you expose people to pornography and then study some kind of outcome. The potential harms to participants and the people around them are considered to outweigh the benefits of studying it.
Which⌠thereâs a lot to unpack there.
Basically, there havenât been any good experimental studies on porn exposure since the 90s. Because, even by that point, research was overwhelmingly converging on âporn is harmful.â Yâall hang out around here, you know the effects - acceptance of rape myths, distorted perception of sexual norms, sexual dysfunction, cruelty or lack of compassion towards women, etc etc etc. These effects were found through both experimental and correlational studies based on self-reported, self-selected porn watching outside of a lab.
The latter is the only thing youâre still allowed to do (mostly). Unfortunately, it is now nearly impossible to perform good research on the subject, because itâs so difficult to find a control group. At least if youâre studying men. Nearly all men watch pornography regularly. In fact, one of the only populations you can still study with a decent control group is teenagers. But research on minors has its own ethical red tape, to say nothing of getting guardians to agree to it, so it doesnât happen much either. So, with no control group to compare it to, youâre going to get weak results at best. You can compare self-reported volumes or types of porn watching between each other, but thatâs really about it.Â
In some ways, the ethical considerations have become somewhat pointless. If all men are watching porn, what does it matter if they watch it in a lab or not? But since you basically canât find men who havenât been exposed to porn, and you canât guarantee that these men arenât going home between lab sessions and watching porn, porn-related research will be limited to the immediate effects of exposure. And youâve still got an uphill battle to explain to an ethics board why your research on immediate effects of porn exposure, which you know will be harmful in some way, is going to add to the existing literature in a way that is significant enough to be worth the harm. Because, regardless of if these people are going home to harm themselves in the exact same way, itâs still generally unethical to expose people to known harms to study the effects.Â
And because we know porn watching is addictive, that further complicates the ethical considerations. To give a fair analogy, itâs similarly difficult to get approval for an experimental in-lab study on the effects of giving opiates to people. We know what it does, we know itâs harmful, and we know itâs addictive, so unless you have some truly groundbreaking new research idea and some way to significantly mitigate the harm, youâre not going to get approval for that. (Ex: You can get approval for testing a new opiate that you think has a lower possibility for abuse, especially if you plan on testing it on people with chronic pain disorders or terminal cancer patients or something. Thatâs groundbreaking, thereâs a way to mitigate harm, and it has the potential to do more good than harm. You canât just get approval to give a bunch of Dilaudid to undergrads to test, say, how it affects short-term memory.)
TLDR, itâs not just that scientists donât care. Itâs that itâs basically impossible to do ethical porn research in any way that would provide meaningful results.
Brilliant analysis, thank you!
Omg itâs like me if I had a degree in research.
Anti-Heresy Wednesday #3: Arianism
[Arianism] was the first Christological heresy to seriously threaten the Church. It denied the Divinity of Christ.
Arius, while at the Catechetical School in Alexandria in the year 319 A.D., proposed a problem: If the Son of God is begotten of God the Father, then the Father existed before the Son. Since the Father existed before the Son, the Son is unlike the Father. The Son is not co-eternal with the Father. According to Arius, the Son was created by the Father and not Divine as the Father.
Ariusâ main error was that he imposed time on the eternal (timeless) nature of God. As a father begets a son, he gives his nature to his son. For humans, the father exists before the son, since humans live in time. Begetting for humans is an act embedded in time and matter. This is part of human nature. But for God, the Father gives His spiritual, divine, timeless nature to His only-begotten Son (Heb. 1), so âbeforeâ and âafterâ are meaningless.
Even though the Son is begotten of the Father, this does not imply that the Father existed before the Son. Also the Son of God is begotten and not created. (Even a human father only begets his children and does not create them.)
Unfortunately Arius failed to understand this fundamental point and thus refused to accept the Divinity of Christ. Arius took his debate from the academic circles to the streets. He quickly gained a large following. After being excommunicated in Alexandria, he fled to Caesarea where Bishop Eusebius helped him spread his errors.
In 325, the Council of Nicaea was called to deal with the Arian crisis. The Council excommunicated Arius and declared that the Son is âof the same substanceâ (homoousion) as the Father. This became part of the Nicene Creed. But the Arians continued to gain power and political influence. They remained a serious threat to the Church for another half century. St. Athanasius was the great defender of the Faith against this heresy.
I didnât plan to tip my fedora on this post but here I am and tbh itâs hilarious to me that Arius evidently applied the basic logic of causality here and was branded a heretic because he assumed that all things which exist, that is, interact with reality, are subject to the passage of time.
And Iâm further imagining his increasingly incredulous state of mind as his âerrorâ was âexplainedâ to him.
If the post actually quoted the first view verses of Hebrews the heresy would make more sense, considering that it says exactly the opposite of Ariusâ position. In order to reach this position Arius had to explicitly deny the truth of the Bible itself, which is the real heresy. Itâs not about âoh wrongthinkâ itâs more about âHey idk if you know this dude but the thing youâre saying is literally denies the validity of the Bible you claim to espouse as true and thatâs stupid.â
(NIV) â1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.3 The Son is the radiance of Godâs glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. â
99.9% of heresies result from people trying to impose human logic or human morals on God.
If you deny something the Bible says because âthatâs not possibleâ or âthat doesnât make sense,â you are denying the omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence of God, and therefore denying Godâs nature and God Himself.
If you say âa loving God wouldnât do thatâ or âI canât believe in a God who would do thisâ or âGod canât really mean that because He loves us,â youâre trying to impose human emotions and morals and a flawed, human definition of love on the Creator of the Universe.
When we accept that God is bigger than us and that He does not have to justify Himself to us, we can believe that what the Bible says about Him is true, even if - and especially when - it defies all human reason.
After all, if God fit within our human reason, He wouldnât be God.
Iâm not telling anyone what to believe here. Iâm just asking everyone to be honest. If you donât believe in God or you believe in a different god/power/deity, be honest about it. Donât pretend to be Christian while simultaneously denying and undermining everything Christianity stands for.
If sex is a service rape is just unpaid labor.
If sex is a service it can be provided to family members, morally.
If sex is a service it can be a small childâs career aspiration, and it should be supported as such.
If sex is a service then pornographic content can also be displayed to children,as they should be given examples of their work possibilities.
If sex is a service, and sex work is an existent opportunity to you, you canât complain about being unemployed.
If sex is a service csa is just some form of child labour.
If sex is a service it is bigoted and against the costumer rights to denny service on the basis of anything, including sex, regardless of the workers orientation they should provide service to the costumer.
Things get really creepy when you mix things with inherent different natures like sex and labour, I know.
If sex work is work, then incest is no different than working in the yard or shed with mom and dad. Itâs just practice for working in the real world.
This isnât hypothetical. Women have been and are being denied unemployment in Germany for refusing to take a job as a prostitute. How often do you suppose that happens to men?
Oh yeah, the wonders of legal âsex workâ
I really hate it when secularistsâ idea of helping poor people is pushing contraceptives and abortion on them. Youâre not giving them what they need.Â
Target Africa is a book by Obianuju Ekeocha on this subject. Natural Womanhood and FACTS About Fertility also discuss similar topics. We see impoverished, minority, and mentally ill populations be pressured or forced into birth control, sterilization, or abortion by the state. Itâs been going on since the eugenicist movement of the 1920s and itâs still going strong under the guise of âprogressive charityâ.
It is 2025. Prostution is legal. Thousands of women who canât pay their student loans or cant pay their medical expenses or maybe just canât pay bills working at Walmart are now working in brothels, though they have some newspeak name.
Now, radical feminists on this site have a tendency to ask hard questions and this is mine: Are women allowed to refuse service to customers? And for what reasons?
How many fast food employees are allowed to refuse to make their ex a burger? How many manicurists can turn away their grouchy neighbors? We are in a tizzy about bakers not making wedding cakes for gay couples recently so if prostitution is supposed to be like any other job then when can you reasonably refuse service at other jobs?
Your ex comes in and wants to have sex with you and the manager says youâll lose your job if you donât. Your dadâs friend who has been giving you creepy looks since you were 13 is now here for you at 18. We can really go on and on because these places could start making you roleplay or be flogged for BDSM or a million other things.
And another swerf post on this website recently mentioned OSHA standards for bodily fluids. According to the âregular jobâ propaganda, we would have to have no skin to skin contact if we really wanted it to operate like any other job.
Answer me, you human trafficking enabling cowards.
fellas is hugging your wife murder? I mean sheâs gonna die one day
Lmao just gonna go down to the projects and mow everyone down bc they shouldnât have to live in poverty
You ever see something and think, maybe cringe culture should exist. Maybe we shouldnât be so hasty to let people do whatever they want. Some shame and humility is good, actually.
How many men have you seen mocking menâs expression of their plight as âmale tearsâ, especially in selfies with mugs emblazoned with that empathy-deficient message?
straight men trying to make Serious war dramas and accidentally making incredibly tender homoerotic cinema is the funniest thing
Can you imagine being so fucking disgustingly touch-starved and sex-saturated that any amount of fraternal camaraderie instantly signals âthey are gays, they are in a homosexual relationshipâ to your ghoulish, porn-addled brain?
Friendly reminder:
If someone refuses an alcoholic drink, then:
- accept their answer
- offer them something else
- donât ask why, itâs probably none of your business
- donât get all weird and defensive and act like theyâre judging you, they just donât drink! Theyâre not doing it AT you!
- for the love of god, donât try and buy/give/sneak them alcohol anyway!!!
I literally donât understand why people get so triggered when people turn down alcohol. Like, why are you pressed? What does that have to do with you?
Also! Someone who drinks alcohol occasionally might not want it EVERY time itâs offered. Just because someone says âno, thank youâ when offered alcohol doesnât mean they NEVER drink. They just donât want any right now, and thatâs okay.
AND if someone DOESNâT drink alcohol, that doesnât mean they are judging you for drinking it or that they have a problem with it being around.
Reasons someone might turn down alcohol:
- they donât like alcohol
- they donât feel like having it right now
- there is alcoholism in their family and they donât want to go down that road
- they themselves are recovering from an addiction
- they are taking a medication that has an interaction with alcohol
- they will be driving and donât want to risk being buzzed when itâs time for them to leave
- they are pregnant
- the nonalcoholic beverage option sounds more appealing to them in the moment
- theyâve had bad experiences with alcohol in the past
- their religious/philosophical beliefs forbid them from drinking alcohol
- [insert other reasons here]
Notice how many of these reasons are NOBODYâs business but the person whose saying no. They donât owe you an explanation.
I love alcohol, but I have friends who donât drink it for one reason or another. Generally, they just donât like it. And thatâs okay. If Iâm pouring alcoholic drinks Iâll offer them one, to be polite, but when they say no I donât press or give them crap for it. I just offer them something else. Itâs that easy.
Making fun of girls who dream of being a wife and stay-at-home-mom actually doesnât make you progressive or feminist or cool, it just makes you a person who shits on someone elseâs dream, a.k.a an assholeÂ
Whenever someone says that I say âOkay, whatever floats your boat, I guessâ and then I think âWhy would she want that? Isnât it boring to just sit around all day and do nothing?â
Moms donât âsit around all day and do nothingâ - they have a incredibly important 24/7 job: raising little human beings. Donât devalue that by calling it ânothingâ.Â
Man, my mom cooked, cleaned, paid the bills, went grocery shopping, did my hair every morning before school and every night (which, as a white woman with no prior experience of doing black hair, especially on a tender-headed child, is no easy feat). She helped with my homework, consoled me after a bad day, frequently volunteered at the school. She even picked my anxious, crying ass up from kindergarten early nearly every day for the first semester and would lie down with me every night when I was a child until I fell asleep (and that usually took several hours). Thatâs not even scratching the surface of all the things sheâs done for me and my siblings. She was always the first person up and the last person to go to bed. Nothing about what she did, and continues to do to a lesser degree, is easy.
Domestic work is constantly undervalued even though every family depends on it. My grandmother on my momâs side would go hungry just so her kids could eat - that is not nothing.
Also, if you would commend a man for being a stay at home dad and doing exactly what women have been doing for centuries, donât pretend you care about womenâs labor.
Like you once did, these children are anxiously awaiting their transition into the arms of their families.
These babies shatter the lie that we werenât alive and perfectly human prior to our birth. Horrifically, thousands like them are scheduled to die by abortion today.
They desperately need you to take a stand in their defense.
âWE NEED TO STOP SPENDING SO MUCH ON THE MILITARYâ
âAAAAH THE RUSSIANSâ
âWE NEED TO HELP THESE COUNTRIES !!!!!!â
