The Last of Us 2 on PS4
“As a lesbian who has been playing video games since early childhood, seeing a lesbian character with a mandatory love interest really validated my experience. Of course there are many variations of queerness throughout various games out there, but most of them are open world or choose your own adventure types, which allow for players to opt in or out of romancing certain people. Since I can’t (and by no means would ever want to) opt out of my queerness in real life, these types of games just weren’t doing it for me. In TLOU2, you MUST be a teenaged lesbian or you can’t continue to play. I can’t count how many cis/hetero white male characters I’ve been forced to identify with, so I’m extra appreciative of Ellie for flipping the script. If you’re a woman who’s ever been in love with a woman before, this game is Very Relatable Content™.”

Summerland (2020)
“Given my penchant for lesbian period pieces, Summerland captured my interest early on in its production. A World War II period drama boasting the talent of Gemma Arterton with a lesbian storyline is my quintessential trifecta. Devastatingly romantic, heart-wrenchingly sweet and deliciously escapist, Summerland is the next film in lesbian cinema you need to devour.”

Dakota Johnson tried to tell us, Halle Berry does the right thing, and the last of us 2 is very, very lesbian.
“As a lesbian viewer, and like so many others in the community, I could see parts of myself in Santana’s story. When she beautifully serenaded her secret crush to Landslide, I thought back to the many SoundCloud tracks I had stayed up all night recording to send to my high-school girlfriend. When she confessed her love for Brittany, I felt that telltale confusion, freedom and excitement. When Santana came out to her grandmother, I passionately empathized and remembered my own fears coming out to my Mexican family. Glee came on air before marriage equality was even legalized in the United States, so when Santana and Brittany escaped to Indiana to get married, my dreams of marrying my girlfriend burned all the brighter.“

We remember that the first Pride was led by transgender women of color at the Stonewall Riots in 1969. There is no Pride for some of us without liberation for all of us. Here are some ways to observe Pride month while helping the black LGBTQ community.
