Description:

One moment you are home relaxing and the next you are fighting for your life amongst creatures that shouldn't exist. Stuck in a body that is no longer yours and in a world that seems so much like your own but so different as well you are forced to come to terms that the life you once knew no longer exists and you need to find a way to survive in your new reality. Mated to three Kings of a species so similar to the fairy tales of your world and so horrifyingly different as well you are stuck with the choice stay with them and accept your fate as their future Queen or run for the hills in hopes of finding kinder faces. This story may have crossovers particularly from True Blood (specifically Godric and Eric), Sinners (Remmick, Stack and Mary) and Vikings (Ragnar, Ragnarsson's, Lagertha, Aslaug, Floki and Helga). Cultural Insights of Our Own: Lessons From a Newly Decoded Digital Archive

Abstract

The recently decoded Internet Archive includes the digital artifact called “Archive of Our Own” (AO3) from early third millennium Earth.  AO3 is unusually well backed up and therefore is presumed to contain some of the most significant -- perhaps even sacred -- texts of the time.  In this paper we present our preliminary analysis of AO3 metadata, including new insights about the literature, gender and sexuality, religion, and scientific understanding of this historical era: 

I. LITERATURE. We describe the cultural centrality of figures such as the Winchesters and Reader.  We explore how they featured heavily in every dominant literature genre of the era, including Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, and Oral Sex.  

II. GENDER AND SEXUALITY. We review the overwhelming evidence that male-male relationships were the most culturally significant sexual and romantic relationships, but we also show that it was a culture with an unusually broad set of sexual and gender roles.  In particular, we highlight the unusual tripartite conceptualization of gender as including alpha, beta, and omega roles; we note the apparent prejudice against betas, illustrated in the prevalence of “no beta we die like men” and similar protest slogans. 

III. RELIGION. We describe a newly discovered religious taboo: doves were a common sacrificial animal of the time, but they were forbidden from being eaten.  

IV. SCIENCE. Finally, we present new insight about alternate universes.  While previous scholars hypothesized that the scientists of Earth may have developed a correct early theory of the multiverse by the late second millennium, our analysis of AO3 presents evidence to the contrary.  As late as the early third millennium, prevailing theories postulated highly specific universes, such as a universe in which everyone is in high school, or a universe contained within a coffee shop.  

Taken together, these historical insights show that further investigation is warranted into the valuable documents stored within AO3, perhaps even going beyond the metadata to examine the full texts.

If Ratatouille mechanics were real, there would be a whole market of businesses offering the services of operating rats to people who want them, and it'd be like how bees produce honey. People in the rat business would be so exhausted of having to explain over and over again that no, the rats aren't being exploited. If the rats didn't like how they're being treated, they would simply not return. There's no goddamn way to force a rat to be so passionate about playing the saxophone that they'll figure out how to puppeteer a human to do it for them. All that the business does is finding a way to put that specific rat in the hair of someone who's about to go on stage.

I spoke MUCH too soon! I made the flight, but the flight didn’t make it anywhere. Spent four hours sitting on the tarmac while a tornado watch and lightning storm shut down most of the East Coast.

Got taken halfway back to the gate after four hours and had to pause so the police could open our plane up and arrest a guy.

(No, I’m not kidding.)

Pilot announced we would refuel and be able to fly on, albeit very late, as the storm had passed.

Simultaneously, all of our phones buzzed with an announcement from the airline that the flight had been cancelled.

The pilot audibly stuttered over the intercom and was like, “Uh, you may have just gotten an unexpected announcement. My apologies. They didn’t tell me.”

We spent a further two hours in the airport with five thousand other unhappy people.

We have now rebooked for TWO DAYS FROM NOW, because there are no seats to be had tomorrow.

We made it back to the hotel we checked out of this morning and checked back in.

The flight attendants from our flight are in the room next door.

There was some drama in the Riffles after i went to bed last night -- apparently a cub got swept up by the current and it caused a lot of chaos. I didn't see it live, so i know very little of the specifics.

The immediate outcome from the chaos was that 909 and 132 both got separated from one of their cubs. 909 has since reunited with hers, as she was seen this morning with both of them, but we haven't seen 132 yet so we don't know if she and her cub have since reunited.

this sort of thing happens sometimes -- spring cubs are small, and the river current is strong. Usually it is okay in the end and everyone finds each other, but sometimes cubs do disappear like this. And with so many new cubs this year, stuff like this is bound to happen. We will know more once we see 132 again.

this continues to be complicated!

132's missing cub has been seen on cam. they are eating scraps, but they will still need milk to thrive and grow. Apparently last night the cub was seen trying to join other family groups, including the 284s. I did not see the interactions myself, and i do not have time to go searching for videos of the interactions, so i only know what i was told. The fact that this cub is eating scraps, and especially the fact that they are actively looking for a family, are good signs. This means that there is still a chance that 132 and her missing cub find each other, and that there is also a small chance for an adoption to occur with another family.

tldr: the missing coy is still alive, is eating fish, and is searching for families to join. whether or not they find a family -- their own or a different one -- remains to be seen.

After the hell of the past two days, this reminded me of what America could and should be about. It’s a little pocket of hope when our administration is trying to extinguish diversity and community and basic human decency and replace them with fear and hate and division.

So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.

I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.

Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.

So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.

Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.

Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵‍💫

Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.

a few doors down from me my neighbors have a squirrel bar nailed to the tree in front of the sidewalk, not exactly this but something like this:

it's been there for years and they never "stock" it so it's just sitting there. anyway, i thought it would be cute to make a little squirrel out of sculpey and leave it on one of the stools in the middle of the night. i also made a little sculpey beer bottle with its own label.

it lasted exactly one day and now it is gone. it didn't fall off, i stuck it on with tape. what do you think happened to it? your most fantastical and wrong answers only, please

and put him in the bar. the next day he was gone. a couple weeks later he reappeared painted... but with ANOTHER new guest: a 3D printed squirrel based on the first one i sculpted (with a bottle!)
