An asian woman falling in love with a white man and that white man basically making her realize that she shouldn't be following her father is racist it comes from Daughter of the Dragon. It comes from Sax Rohmer. We need to recognize that its a thing. We need to be critical of how we talk about characters that fall into that trope

rough drafting it here but i think Batman has a special connection to the concept of child sidekicks in a way that defies modern feelings about child soldiers because he was the child who lost everything and felt he needed to make a change in the world but was denied the agency and choice to do anything. child Bruce would have fit right in with any of the Robins if he'd had a Batman and it's the fact that he didn't that ultimately drives him to extend the choice he never got. it was never about soldiers or "refusing to protect the children from themselves," it is, within the acceptable morality of the genre, respecting a child's personhood and ability to make decisions for themselves and giving them opportunities their adult never had. it's why you can't take the Robins away from Batman without significantly changing the character, because Batman was born from child Bruce's most heartfelt wish to be able to DO something about all the injustice in the world and so to deny other children that is to deny himself

Also! I have said it before but it frustrates me so badly that it deserves its own post.

Stratt would have sent Grace if he had a wife and kids. Stratt would have forced him onto the mission if he had a beautiful family and a dog that loved him and parents he visited every weekend. At the end of the day it was always, always going to be the sacrifice of the few for the good of the many, and it would have made functionally very little difference if it was one man or a whole household. That line was not for her, or the crew, or any of the gaurds that she would eventually send after him. That line was for Grace, not to try to convince him that his life had no meaning, but to force him to confront that he had nothing to hide behind, to strip away his selfless defences before he could fall back on them, to lay out the problem as she saw it; him versus the world, him versus humanity. The reason that him 'pretending this is about the children' upsets her is because she has already tried to dismiss that, she has already hit that point, and the fact that he's returning to it with semantics tells her everything she needs to know.

Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why?
