I love that the pandemic actually definitively proved a lot of those "hard" questions for us. Masking up reduced cases of the flu to almost nonexistent numbers and we had zero flu deaths for a time. The welfare and social service and unemployment programs helped keep people living paycheck to paycheck out of poverty, and those stimulus checks some folks keep complaining about actually massively benefitted the common man and the economy. Individual personal travel was so extremely restricted on a global scale that we basically have concrete proof that individual restraint in terms of driving cars or travelling means absolutely nothing by comparison because the mass pollution is coming from the fisheries and the corporations with private jets and container ships. Working from home actually has massive benefits for a company like productivity boosts and better mental health of employees while also saving gas

and we're just. Willingly going back to how everything was before. We were shown how to do things better and the people in charge said "that's nice but we just want to get everything 'back to normal' :)"

My primary takeaway from COVID was "The first thing people did when they had free time from work was they started demanding a better world. It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

Perhaps my genuine biggest piece of socializing advice as someone who spent years of my life feeling wholly incapable of positively interacting with other people is to just ask the other person questions about themselves. Like that’s it. People love answering questions. They really love thoughtful follow-up questions. They love feeling like someone else is interested in them, their interests, their lives, their opinions. At some point in your questioning they will say something that reminds you of a funny / interesting story. Tell it. By far the best and funniest introduction to an immortal character I’ve ever read was in Warbreaker, where Vasher is consistently presented for the first 400 pages as a grumpy, disheveled, ambiguously moral vigilante, who is competent enough at everything that it’s clear he’s an experienced guy, but has no social graces and barely any reputation except among a few people. He wears rags and ties his pants up with a piece of rope and his closest personal relationship is being a dad slash cleanup crew for a very cursed talking sword with memory issues.

Then, more than 2/3 of the way through the book, he finally has a conversation with another one of the main characters, who asks him about how the magic works. He proceeds to spend the next four pages giving a highly technical explanation of how all of the previously mentioned elements of the magic system function and fit together into a larger whole, explaining what is not known about the magic and detailing numerous edge cases and theoretical situations. His audience is understandably confused about where and when and *why* he got a PhD??

Later he explains how he is also three other apparently unrelated historical figures and a zombie. Of course he has a PhD, he’s old enough to be five different people.

Big on the "not productive" part. Making jokes/threats about killing people is not going to help make your situation better, all you are doing is harming people in a way so similar to how people harm you.

And, in a similar vein, saying to kill all men because they are just "biologically made to be rapists" is once again, not productive, and it absolves the people who do these horrible acts because it's "just who they are, as men". No, it's not because they are men, it's because they are horrible people who CHOSE to do that.

Also, why is the death of a large group of people over something inherent to them and something they can't control a good thing? How will that make society better?

Honestly, I think some people don't want to remove the boot that is stepping on people's necks, they just want to become the boot
