One thing that never stops being funny in Worm is the contrast between how Taylor Hebert (and by extension the reader due to most of the story being written from her POV) sees herself vs how the wider public sees her
She'll be here thinking she's just a little girl in way over her head, meanwhile the local government is printing and distributing PSAs which describe her as an "unpredictable young woman" prone to "bursts of sudden and extreme violence towards those she sees as her enemies" and the entire city is high key terrified of Little Miss First Horseman of the Apocalypse
Also people being obsessed with Greek mythology as kids wasn’t invented by Percy Jackson. My dad read the Iliad and the odyssey in high school because one of his friends was super obsessed with Ancient Greek lit and he was like “well I can’t let him be smarter and more well read than I am I’ve gotta catch up”
Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.
Well it is time for the TMA X Worm post, aka, Avatar of which fear is each character. (obviously spoiler warning for both TMA and Worm)
Now, there is a shitload of characters in Worm so I'll only have some, mainly the Undersiders because they're the first to come to mind and it was really easy.
Taylor - The easy way out would be to say Avatar of the Corruption. Bugs are the excuse. She will be tormented by the Lonely, her fear of being alone in the world drives her for like half the series.
Rachel - The Hunt, but only because of the dogs and her being more animalistic. She will probably be stuck in a Web domain. She isn't really scared of much but elaborate plans anger her due to her lack of understanding.
Lisa - Avatar of the Eye, again not hard to explain. She knows shit and makes it scary. The Web is also a possibility, she do be scheming, but the Eye influence is too strong imo. Maybe she'll be tormented by the Spiral as she hates not knowing, but I'm not sure it's to the level of fear.
Brian - Again, obvious, the Dark. His power is basically the Dark manifested in the purest form. He was marked by the Flesh when Bonesaw had her fun with him.
Alec - For Alec I wasn't sure. My best guess is the Flesh, as he makes people feel as if they are meat bags to be puppeted. But it can also be the Buried because they are stuck unable to do anything. Or maybe even the Web, also known as the mother of puppets, but the control feels too direct to be Web. Actually I don't know which fear will torment him either. Please add if you have ideas.
Aisha - The Spiral. Her MO is to drive her enemies mad with fear. Again, not sure about her fear.
Amy - Amy is begrudgingly an Avatar of the Flesh while also having it as her fear. Both originated at the incident with Victoria.
Jack Slash - The Slaughter 100%. He doesn't just kill like the End, he HURTS. But he doesn't fear much so once more idk.
Bonesaw - Avatar of the Flesh. For her, everyone is just a bag of meat and organs to mess with. She might be afraid of the End but it's hard with psychopaths.
Colin - Colin gives me Hunt avatar vibes because of his relentless pursuit after his prey, whoever or whatever it is. As Armsmaster he probably feared the End, not quite death but dying without leaving an impact. But after his character arc he started caring less about himself and more about humanity as a whole, and his tormentor became the Extinction.
Dragon - Dragon can either be avatar of the Eye, when she was given access to every camera in the US. Or the Extinction, not because she did something but because she might. She fears the Buried, but instead of being trapped physically, she fears being trapped in her code's restrictions.
That's what I have for now. Please feel free to add your thoughts on other characters, or if you think one of the ones I wrote about will be different.

Would an AU where Annabeth dies from the poisoned knife in tLO be too angsty? Some thoughts in no particular order:
- A reversal of Nico and Percy's roles where Percy is withdrawing from camp and Nico tries to coax him back into his community.
- All sorts of fun potential for Curse of Achilles stuff.
- Athena blaming him because obviously he doesn't have enough on his plate. Doubly juicy if we go with Percy's Sword of Hades characterization where he doesn't hold himself responsible for the deaths of people close to him because that would be devaluing their choices. Maybe she makes him do the Parthenos quest as recompense.
- All sorts of amnesia angst, especially if he remembers Annabeth but not that she's dead. At some point some deity would totally offer to take his memories of her away to numb the pain, and obviously he'd decline, but he would understand the appeal.
- Pereyna angst where Reyna’s attracted to him but recognizes he's not in the headspace for a relationship and Percy is attracted to Reyna but feels like he's betraying Annabeth's memory.
- Percy isn't sure if he's just imagining it, having genuine auditory hallucinations, or if Hades is actually letting her talk to him, but he swears he hears her voice sometimes.
- Percy going genuinely insane on his own in Tartarus.
- Would also be interesting to see the Lost Trio's intro to camp without Annabeth OR Percy. Doubly so if Percy's been so withdrawn that they aren't certain he's actually missing and not just avoiding them.
OMG I'd love to read it. I love Annabeth but having her haunt the narrative will be so fun!
Also Percy will not be on his own for too long in Tartarus because Annabeth will jump in once she hears about it, which gives us a second opportunity to cry when they get separated.
Sometimes a found family is a precognitive child who murdered a god, the fake doctor who helped her, a former serial killer turned banker, the memory wiping uncle, an intangible presence, a man obsessed with his failing power whose estranged from his three daughters (behemoth is trans, she doesn't know yet), the guys that operate the interdimensional doors, the gay icon who shoots rainbow lasers and doesn't know all the dark secrets, the indestructible mildly authoritarian aunt and the corpse of a god they keep in their basement.
You know when a kid does a shitty drawing but the parent sticks it on the fridge regardless because they love them
And then if you keep em over time you can see the kid get better and better at drawing, and it's sortof nice to look at the old ones and compare em to the new?
