Which Solar-Powered Character is the Best?
Happy (accidentally way too belated) Valentine’s Day, dear readers! I’ve been doing some Science recently to figure out which character among the (all very similar) DC characters who rely on Earth’s yellow Sun for their powers is ultimately the Best, and would like to present my findings to you as a gift! Nothing says “I love you” like dumping a bunch of data and then going radio silent until the next update, right?
Going head-to-head today are Kal-El, Apollo, Komand’r, Koriand’r, Kara Zor-El, Ryand’r, and Kon-El. For simplicity’s sake, I’ve omitted Kara Zor-L from the set because while she is a Kryptonian with a unique set of powers and abilities, she’s from an alternate Earth and therefore does not rely on the Sun of the universe she currently exists in. That’s clear as mud. Oh well, moving on!
As far as I can tell, everyone listed would be classified as majestic-class. (This isn’t really a term used outside the Wildstorm universe, but it’s a good term, Zod-damnit! I’m bringing it back!) They’re a bunch of bad rascals who are stronger, faster, and way less vulnerable than puny humans. Therefore, the distinction is in the details.
Everyone except Komand’r is capable of flight, but the speed does vary. The Kryptonians are about as fast the Flash, which is stupid fast. Apollo is slightly slower, needing a leisurely 30 seconds to circle the globe. To paraphrase the guys from Top Gear/The Grand Tour: “seconds are like years in superhero time.” Meanwhile Kori and Ry (and other Tamaraneans) fly by harnessing/riding solar winds. This would, in theory, make their flight speed dependent on wind speeds. We can fudge that a little because ~comic book science~ but they still come out as the slowest.
In terms of physical strength, they’re all bracketed pretty much the same as with flight. Kon is a unique outlier because instead of super strength, he has something called tactile telekinesis, which makes his level of strength rely more on mind than physical might. That’s fun. I believe Tamaraneans initially were canonically on the same strength level as Wonder Woman, but these days, Amazons and Kryptonians are pretty much equal, so it’s not the most accurate yardstick, because Tamaraneans haven’t really increased in power.
This means it all comes down to skills.
Apollo is ex-military, Kori and her siblings were trained as warriors from childhood, and Kara trained with the Amazons. Kal and Kon are just kind of there, so we can eliminate them.
Apollo’s big weakness is that he will literally die without sunlight; once he expends the solar energy he has in reserve, he has to recharge or it’s lights out for the Sun King. So I’m gonna go ahead and eliminate him.
Of the three Tamaraneans, Komand’r has the strongest energy projection powers, but she can’t fly - big disadvantage if she’s fighting someone of equal power level and skill who IS able to fly. She’s gone. Ryand’r is also gone, as he’s the weakest of his siblings. :(
This brings us to Kara and Kori. While Kori has more training, Kara is objectively stronger and has a wider range of abilities. So, by a veeeeery narrow margin,
Kara Zor-El of Krypton is the baddest solarpunk bitch in the universe!
