If the writers weren't glaringly racist, I’m just thinking about how it would’ve made so much more sense for Erica to have Holly’s plot.

We've known her since season 2 and would have been far more invested in her than in Holly, who we knew nothing about going into season 5. They wouldn't have had to retcon her age *cough*, as she would have been around 12 years old in '87, same as Will when he was taken. She would have had a future-sister-in-law dynamic with Max in Camazotz. She could have relayed so much information to Max about what's been going on while she was gone. We could have seen her nerd out about A Wrinkle in Time and science (which is canonically her favourite subject). We could have seen actual depth added to her character and given an active, emotional storyline to Lucas, who would have been hellbent on finding her. It would have been so satisfying to see that dynamic since we're used to them bickering all the time; a real true-to-life example of the complexities of sibling love. It could have been so, so good.

Now that is an interesting idea.

I think the reason they (the Duffers) went with Holly was that season one was initially centered around the Wheeler family kids, with both Nancy and Mike losing their best friend as their entry into the plot. So to bring it back to that initial concept, they wanted the third Wheeler kid to get taken. But since Holly hadn't been a character in the first four seasons, we didn't have any pre-existing investment in her character, so the show had to spend time creating that. With Erica we already know and love her. Also it would make more sense that she'd recognize and trust Max.

However, you'd have to completely restructure the entire kidnapping plot. Erica knows about the monsters and she knows who Vecna is, even if she wouldn't recognize him by sight. If Henry approached her the same way he approached Holly, Erica's response would be along the lines of "No shit, Sherlock. And how do you know about the demogorgons?" Also, Erica's existing knowledge means she'd tell the party, or at least Lucas, giving them a heads up.

I suppose it's possible that Lucas would be too caught up with guilt over Max to listen to her. And Dustin is clearly too fixated on his own grief to consult with her. Steve and Robin might dismiss her as a kid. So if Henry presents himself as a scientist associated with the military who thinks the army's going about things the wrong way he might fool Erica into thinking she and him are working together to defeat Vecna, and circumstances keep the rest of the party from listening to her, it could be made to work.

oooo i love this… the idea of erica being tricked by henry just like everyone else is something i think would be interesting to see especially because once she found out it would probably cause her a lot of self-doubt and reasonably lead to a fear of being exploited which vecna could use against her (like how he tried to use will’s fear against him).

we would still get to see manipulative henry but this time he’d have to work harder to convince her to help him because obviously erica wouldn’t fall for his shit easily.

also isolating her from the party would help us to get a better understanding of her character and would let her have some real spotlight rather than just being sidelined!

Today I did the laundry, finished today's work well within schedule, finished another unrelated thing I had been working on forever, worked on the basket project while we visited my boyfriend's family, dropped my keys between the seats of bf's car and managed to find them without McFucking Losing It, got groceries, finally took the big good thorough scrubbing-every-pore-clean shower I've been procrastinating, changed the bedsheets, and am now fresh clean and horizontal in my fresh clean bed curled up with the love of my life.
