people hate self diagnosis because it provides Mad people with autonomy.

self diagnosis goes against the idea that psychiatriac professionals have unique knowledge - knowledge only obtainable by someone who has studies for years, specifically from a removed & outside perspective to any individual's Madness: even if that student, themselves, is Mad.

self diagnosis goes against the idea that Mad people are inherently incapable of telling their own story - that any ways in which they do communicate, express themselves, etc. is tainted by their Madness and thus unreliable.

self diagnosis says "i know my own bodymind better than anyone; i live here. this is my life. i get to define my experiences." self diagnosis holds self compassion. self diagnosis holds self empowerment.

diagnosis is typically something "given to" Mad people. in psychiatry's eyes, diagnosis is something to describe us that we must have, yet can never attain for ourselves.

so even though self diagnosis takes from the boxes that psychiatry has prescribed, it is still a rebellion. it may not be The Solution to freeing Mad people from psychiatry - but it still means something. to me, at least.

Anyone going into the psychiatric or mental health field, or into social work, PLEEEEASE understand informed self diagnosis is a valid diagnosis.

Agreed with all of this, however some extra info and guidance on the diagnosing portion. This is rarely an issue with the psychiatrist themselves. Unfortunately in order for insurance to consider paying for your stay in hospitals, you *must* have a diagnosis. This is both an insurance and a higher up position and NOT the fault of any single psychiatrist. Psychs who work for inpatient facilities usually work at multiple facilities at a time and have so many patients overloaded onto them that they tend to diagnose quickly and also not see patients nearly often enough. Inpatient facilities need serious reforming to be able to provide proper treatment for patients while also treating their staff correctly.

Fun fact telling and explaining to people what will happen if they go to emergency asking for help for being a danger to themselves/others is not… bad. People should know what to expect, and make an informed choice based on available information instead of being lied to. It is not “scaring people away from help.”

Edit to clarify my overall beliefs 'cause people keep assuming it and it's annoying me. I am a psychiatric abolitionist, the psychiatric system is inherently oppressive. If you're looking for alternatives I reccomend looking into local mutual aid networks and anti-carcarel groups.

And peer respite houses! Please if you have one in your local area give it some love. They do peer support for mentally ill people free of charge or expectation.

sometimes people experiencing psychosis and/or mania will come up to you on the street and talk in confusing or upsetting ways. your job is to either have a regular human-to-human conversation with that person or politely leave. your job is not to call 911. do not call 911. you might kill that person if you call 911.

Unless they physically threaten you or you disengage and they try to follow you, please just carry on with your day thank you.

'Cause people tend to not get the memo: People acting strangely in public is not a danger to you. Pacing, talking to themselves or something you can't see, laughing to themselves, stimming, twitching, ticcing, making "weird" noises--it doesn't fucking matter. They're not your personal freak show, they're not broken, they're not a murderer and they're definitely not going to be fucking helped by you calling the authorities or anyone else on em. These actions alone are not indicative of danger to you, as a random person on the street. Shut the fuck up and move on, leave disabled people alone.

To add to this if you really believe they themselves are in danger, approaching and asking directly if there’s any way you can help them, or if they even need help, is much preferred than just calling the authorities on them.
