Well… fuck. This sounds exactly like that History Channel documentary where the narrator was rambling on hysterically about how “THE REVOLUTION EATS ITS OWN! MWAHAHAHAHA!” Where do I even begin?
Robespierre did not “create” the revolution.
Seriously, guys. He didn’t just turn up to the Estates General one day and say “Hey guys, I was in the shower this morning when I had this really great idea called the French Revolution. We’ll kill the king and establish a republic. How about it?” Robespierre was simply an influential figure in the revolution; he was hardly its creator.
Robespierre never killed anyone just for disagreeing with him.
I’m saying this because for a fact, Robespierre personally interceded on the behalf of about 28,000 confessed royalists despite the more radical members of the Committee of Public safety wanting them executed. Remember, these are confessed royalists. They’re not your average Pierre or Louis going around saying “Um, I think we might be taking this revolution thing a bit too far…” No, these people who were essentially traitors to the revolutionary government… and Robespierre saved them.
Wait, what?! Robespierre actually saved royalists? Why, that might just be conclusive evidence that HE DIDN’T HAVE PEOPLE EXECUTED FOR SIMPLY DISAGREEING WITH HIM!
Robespierre was not the “supreme dictator of France”.
People keep forgetting that France did not actually have a leader at this time. The National Assembly had a couple hundred deputies that collectively made policies. The Committee of Public Safety had about 12 other people in it; it wasn’t just Robespierre calling the shots.
Before we go any further, let me introduce you (a little too late) to a few of the other members: Billaud-Varenne, Collot d’Herbois and Fouché. These were some of the people who were responsible for many of the bloody excesses of the revolution, including the executions of 2,000 Lyonnaise rebels and the massacres in the Vendée. All of them were condemned by Robespierre because, you know, he wasn’t a big fan of genocide, and he wanted them brought to justice for their crimes. However, he couldn’t because Robespierre wasn’t the supreme dictator of France and he couldn’t just throw people in jail.
More evidence of Robespierre not being a dictator is that he proposed a Committee of Clemency in an attempt to curb the amount of innocents being thrown in jail or being executed. However, his proposal was rejected by the Committee of Public Safety because again, Robespierre wasn’t the supreme dictator of France and no one had to listen to him if they didn’t want to.
Seriously, at this point, we could even argue that Robespierre being a dictator would have been a vastly better situation for France to be in since he would have been able to deal with people like Billaud, Collot and Fouché.
Robespierre did not create the Reign of Terror.
Similarly to my first point, Robespierre didn’t just turn up to the Committee of Public Safety one day and say “Hey guys, I was bathing in the blood of slain children this morning when I had this really great idea called the Reign of Terror. We’ll kill everyone who disagrees with us. How about it?”
The number of legal executions during the Reign of Terror was at about 17,000 and the number of unsanctioned summary executions was at around 25,000, which would bring the total death toll to about 42,000. That means that through Robespierre’s intervention on behalf of the 28,000 royalists and the other thousands he spared, the numbers add up to him essentially halfing what could have been the death toll of the Reign of Terror. And remember the Committee of Clemency that Robespierre proposed? Last time I checked, people who start reigns of terrors don’t try to prevent the bloodshed of innocents.
Robespierre was not executed because “the people of France opened their eyes”.
If you don’t know the even the basics of the events leading up to 9 Thermidor, then you need to shut the fuck up and do some reading.
Long story short, Robespierre was executed because he threatened to bring people like Billaud, Collot and Fouché to justice and fearing for their lives, they plotted his downfall. Admittedly, Robespierre made a tactical blunder in which he threatened to expose them for their crimes but didn’t give the names, which meant that everyone in the National Assembly was shit scared since they didn’t know if they were one of the people to be exposed. That is why members of the Assembly were so “happy” when Robespierre was arrested on the 9 Thermidor and subsequently guillotined. The Thermidorians then went off to ruin Robespierre’s reputation, pinning all of the blame for the revolution’s excesses on him and his supporters in order to save their own skin. This, combined with all of the royalist propaganda and the shock of the French Revolution, has contributed to the totally misinformed opinions of secondary school students today.
So there. I’m too tired and sleepy to continue this post, and I want to eat food. If it’s not too much to ask for, I don’t want to ever see another one of these fucking posts characterizing Robespierre as the love-child of Stalin and Hitler ever again.
