a talking point i often see when defending the consumption of dark content is that it’s a coping mechanism for those with trauma which is very valid and true but i also want to make this abundantly clear: you can like dark content for no reason. you can enjoy fucked up shit in fiction because it’s enjoyable and entertaining. trauma is not required as a ticket for entry. enjoy your dark content bc it’s fun and sexy and don’t let anyone take that away from you
sometimes the reason is this
reblog if you love to see that shit that was fucking crazy
An c.1000-1200 CE example of Egyptian cotton knitted socks.
I made a chart for it!
I realised while making it that the pattern on the sock isn't always symmetrical or identical, so I had to be a little creative. But I managed to get it pretty close, I think!
thoughts:
1) the egyptians wore socks??
2) the egyptians wore tube socks?????
3) mental image of egyptians now top half traditional imagery and bottom half 70s basketball player
4) multiple sections of the book of the dead are probably march madness brackets
5) i want these socks
Keep in mind the caption says 1000-1200 CE, not BCE. So these are closer to us than they are to Ancient Egypt.
corrections:
1) medieval egyptians wore socks??
2) medieval egyptians wore tube socks?????
3) mental image of medieval egyptians now top half fatimid vizier and bottom half 70s basketball player
4) multiple sections of ibn al-nafis’ theologus autodidactus are probably march madness brackets
5) i want these socks
Collating additional sources from the notes:
The sock's catalogue page from the George Washington University Textile Museum collections: https://collections-gwu.zetcom.net/en/collection/item/2960/ appended by @jeannetterankin
Further information from a wikipedia page (linked by @acepalindrome) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Islamic_sock.jpg that appears to quote a previous item description from the textile museum:
12th century sock possibly found in Fustat, Egypt. The knitter of this sock started work at the toe and then worked up towards the leg. The heel was made last and then attached to loops formed while knitting the leg. This ingenious practice allowed the heel to be replaced when it wore out without the necessity of making new socks. The sock is thought to have been made in India because it was found with other materials exported from India and sold in the Egyptian market. Indigo dyes most likely color the two rich blue cotton yarns used to make the pattern on the socks. The yarn would have been dipped into indigo dye repeatedly until the desired shade was achieved.
And a complete, slightly variant, (free to download!) Ravelry pattern by Jodi Dyck, found by @blunderpuff https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/egyptian-medieval-socks
Thank you for collating the information!! i went notes diving for exactly this!!!!!

Offering up my bananen-socken as tribute to the Tumblr gods
You know you want the pattern for this no heel perfect fitting sock in all its cursed genius glory.

I need him face today.
Yesterday I took a mile walk to visit a Buy Nothing Group neighbor who was offering several pairs of new (funky) socks!
The two left socks are uglier than they look in this photo, lol, and I'm putting them in the clothing swap bag. The athletic 🧦 socks at the left are fuchsia, teal, and grey with black, and if they fit and don't give me ligatures like last night's socks did, I'll probably wear them down to threads.
Six pairs of socks (and two to share with friends!) for the price of a walk around my neighborhood, and staying connected to the group!
Seriously. If you aren't in some kind of clothes swap or buy nothing or freecycle group, what are you even doing!
With the help of @sockdreams, you too can combine Pride and Sloth with the same comfortable efficiency

I’ve never reblogged something so fast
My grocery store is kinda like whole paycheck, by which I mean they have an aisle where they sell certain kinds of hippie natural deodorant and soaps and also these kinda of novelty socks.
I own the mermaid ones already, and might go back for the wolves and books ones.
Hunter Schafer had her passport gender marker changed back to M after years of having at as F, and she said the only document not changed was her birth certificate. Implies the agency responsible for passports is cross referencing with other documents and is not just denying new gender marker changes but will start forcibly reverting them to their original marker. God knows what else they have access to but I'm sure it's not pretty.
I need people to understand how serious it can get. And if you only start noticing now and ringing alarm bells, better late than never; but it's also a shame if it takes a white celebrity to sound off in order for people to take institutional transphobia and transmisogyny seriously. Even if this is a notable escalation, it displays a serious devaluing of the violence faced by any invisible transfem, seeing as we are typically the canary in the coal mine. Marginalized transfems of all stripes, nonwhite, disabled, poor, have been begging for people to pay attention and take stuff seriously and it's a disgrace that it's just been met with, at best, performative gestures. We need to keep us safe, and we need to do better to do that.
Like, now really is not the time for more platitudes. "Transfems, you are valid" "listen to black transfems!!" Etc etc. Like, yea keep that up. But I'm saying we need to be creating networks of survival, which involves practice of stuff like stocking up supplies, taking information security seriously, and education of practical steps we can take in our everyday lives to take care of each other. We cannot depend on individualized actions anymore. We must be communal and coordinated.
r/Passports on Reddit has been documenting this happening for weeks. The State Department is not only refusing gender changes, but reverting gender markers if there is any evidence of a gender transition. As in, even if you have changed all of your documentation to reflect your gender, if you've ever had a passport (and possibly even a Social Security card) with a different gender on it, even as a child, they will revert it.
