i mean! i don't think devin's reaction will surprise anyone here. devin is always fight-first and LOVES a good revenge murder. obviously he's not in a position to go kill anyone rn, but like. banging on the door?? shouting that something's wrong with lily?? that he needs help and also he needs to talk to nova Right Fucking Now?? yeah....

the only thing that MIGHT stymie this is lily herself. if lily's clinging to devin and insisting nothing happened and Begging him not to say anything. bc that would make it clear to devin that someone's threatened lily.

and then it's just like. devin so so SO angry but trying to be so gentle, frantically asking like. okay. what happened?? okay you can't tell me what happened, that's fine. who were you with?? do you know their name?? did nova leave you alone with them?? are you hurt anywhere, are you in pain? where are you hurt? can you show me, can i look?

devin would never do anything like, say, trying to undress lily without her permission, which is good as far as Avoiding Further Trauma goes. he'd just be holding her and petting her hair and hyper-alert for any kind of flinching or gasp of pain. & i think lily would figure out what devin thinks happened, bc she's a pretty intuitive kid and also devin is not being subtle.

which puts lily in the very strange position of being like. no nobody touched me, nothing like that, i'm fine.

but actually! what happened was worse!

i know i said sol is probably dead in the lily AU, bc if ruby is raising lily in oiche then she's not around to keep sol alive. however i keep thinking about, like...

what if she IS alive, AND she's managed to remain unimplicated in the whole kidnapping plot.

mainly my motivation here is devin somehow managing to get in contact with her like "hey, look, i need you to re-kidnap my daughter and get her out of here." and sol is like "why are you literally addicted to abandoning your crotch goblin. no?? i am Not going to be her new mommy?? are you out of your mind??" and devin's like "i think she's being sexually abused" (context) and sol's like

.....fuck. god dammit. come ON.

speaking of amnesia timelines i keep thinking about the original fiction AU where devin and nova have their daughter lily, and then lily is kidnapped to be raised by ruby, bc ruby is a normal human woman with normal human values. as opposed to nova, who is the devil.

and then once ruby is caught, nova gets revenge by destroying ruby's memories. with gaslighting magic.

lily, who is a teenager with a STRONG aversion to nova's bullshit, keeps demanding to see ruby, bc ruby is the woman who raised her and is her real mum and lily loves her. and so lily is like. if you don't show me proof of life i'm gonna assume she's dead. and i'm gonna make that everyone's problem

nova finally relents and lets lily see ruby, except ruby doesn't recognize her & is just. quiet and sad. and for some reason lily does not believe nova being like idk, i guess she got sick somehow!! anything could've happened!! who knows!!

so nova has to fess up to what she's done.

which prompts lily's Worst Breakdown Ever. the poor kid is on her knees sobbing and begging nova to fix her mum and lily's saying she's so so SO sorry and she won't fight anymore and she'll do whatever nova wants, she'll be good, just please please please fix her mum.

this is not actually what nova wants! it's pretty reasonable for lily to think nova is punishing her, but nova does not want her daughter to be miserable. nova doesn't even really want her daughter to be Obedient. she wants lily happy!

....she's just also a deeply selfish woman who has not had to deal with Consequences in years.

so nova is like. no no baby it's okay, it's okay, don't be like that. it's okay. i'm sorry. i'll figure out how to reverse it, okay??

and then once lily calms down, nova's like. let's not tell your papa about this, okay? there's no need to upset him, since i'm gonna fix it :)

nova says this because she knows devin will Freak if he finds out. and lily clearly inherited her rebellious teen mental illness from her papa. and nova doesn't want to deal with two of them.

lily, for obvious reasons, takes this as a threat. as nova saying okay! if you tell your papa about this then i will not fix your mum at all :) capiche??

devin, at this point, is still imprisoned in the centerspire, bc of his whole role in the kidnapping plot.

however! he has a suite of rooms to himself again. instead of being in a cell. bc for some reason lily got really upset about him being tortured. even though she knows him just as well as she knows nova, which is to say, not at all.

lily has been spending a Lot of her time with devin. bc devin is the only other person who's immune to nova's gaslighting magic, so lily feels safer with him. AND because he engineered the kidnapping plot. and given what a happy childhood lily had with ruby, and given everything that lily's seen of nova n the people around nova..... lily's like. You Were Right To Do That. thank you papa for giving me up. sorry everything's ruined forever :(

so lily sorts herself out and calms down and decides she can go lay down in devin's rooms, bc the hysterics have left her with a headache. except upon entering, she realizes she actually is not that calm. and is still very upset.

and devin can Tell.

so devin's like, asking her what's up, asking her if something happened. and growing increasingly concerned when she won't answer. and the gentleness just makes lily start crying Again, except she's trying to stop, and sobbing that she's fine, she's fine, nothing's wrong, please just leave it.

devin, knowing what general tachnin culture is like, and having been a victim countless times as a kid in the centerspire, draws the most obvious conclusion. which is that lily has been sexually assaulted.

so. nova is about to be faced with a whole host of new problems!

i think if we’re going to have conversations about consent we should talk about how consenting to something doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be a good experience, and having a bad experience doesn’t necessarily mean someone violated your consent. this can apply to a lot of situations but the two i’m thinking of right now are sex and transition.

you’re getting it on with someone. you enthusiastically consent to having sex with them. afterward, you feel a little weird about it. maybe even distressed. maybe they did something you didn’t enjoy and in the moment you just didn’t say anything. maybe you just realized after the fact that you were not in a good headspace for sex and now your mental health is declining. that doesn’t inherently mean the person you had sex with violated your consent. sometimes it just means you need to take a break from sex or work on communicating your needs or boundaries better during sex.

and with transition, i feel like this is something that gets consistently overlooked but like. there will never be zero detransitioners. there will always be people who decide that actually transition wasn’t right for them. they could have had the best most thorough doctors in the world who did everything by the book and got full informed consent at every step. and some people are still going to decide they don’t like the changes and wish they hadn’t transitioned. that doesn’t mean that the doctors violated their consent, and that doesn’t mean that transition shouldn’t be available to anyone. it just means that we need to have more resources available for folks who detransition.

regret does not automatically mean someone did something wrong. regret is simply one possible result of having bodily autonomy, and i think we need to get more comfortable with that.
