My baby Qais will die because his surgery is delayed. As an oppressed mother in Gaza, I am forced to postpone his surgical procedure —not by choice, but because this post is ignored and not shared.
I will not forgive anyone who watches my child fade and scrolls past without mercy. One share delays his death—but one donation can end this waiting and bring his surgery closer today.
Every minute without a donation steals something from Qais—his strength, his breath, his chance to live. I beg you as a mother: please donate now. Your donation is the difference between life and loss. 💔
“Haha remember when murder-hornets were gonna be a thing? What a nothingburger.”
Yes, because the Washington state government activated like a sleeper-cell and ruthlessly, systematically hunted them down and annihilated them.
“Y2K came to nothing amirite?”
Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.
“Remember the hole in the ozone layer?”
You mean the one that was fixed through rigorous world wide government action?
One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.
Oh Mincemeat fandom do I have a TREAT for you. Today, I was able to get my hands on Charlie’s folder. (There’s multiple-it’s not the one currently being used in the show but it is identical as far as I can tell). Enjoy.
This is the folder that Charlie has during God, That’s Brilliant and Dead in the Water-it also shows up a few times later in the show. Check the alts of the images for more info.
okay already i desperately need u.s. americans to practice the phrase, "not where i'm from, but maybe in other parts of the u.s."
because it's genuinely insane the things i've heard americans say 'america doesn't have' when it's just factually incorrect.
for some perspective: during my longest move i did by-car in the u.s., i drove ~3,000 miles. That's ~4,800 km. It took nearly 50 hours drive-times alone. Meaning, if I could have driven without stopping once, it would have taken nearly 50 hours. Of course I split that up over several days.
Driving that same distance here, If there's a ferry+road from Rabat (in Morocco) to Kyiv (Ukraine), I could take it and keep on going another several hours.
So you can understand how silly it is for someone from the u.s. to be asked to answer a question on behalf of the entirety of the u.s.—geographically, culturally, etc.
So now that we've said all that, I need you to know that I listened to a guy from Idaho tell an Irish person today, "yeah, we just don't really get snails much in America."
Can we just talk about how Max Debryn is the most character ever? He's a pathologist. He's a hobbit. He's queer-coded. He communicates exclusively in gay poetry references and morbid scientific facts. He's got a perfect house. He can bake. He'll chew you up and spit you out if you cross him. He wears bowties. He's unapologetically fat. He's death-positive. He'll choke you just to make a point. He's thinking about getting a dog. What a legend. He should be in everything.
obvs it can be annoying for others when people don't understand something "obvious"
but I do wish people would hold more grace for people who are "stupid"
as my cognitive & memory symptoms get worse I'm seeing myself in these stories more and more
the woman who is visibly confused in public and doesn't see the sign right next to her and asks the same question multiple times because she doesn't understand the answer or is failing to communicate the question she actually means to ask.
the person who enters a building and has to ask if she's found the right place, because she's too overwhelmed to put together the "obvious"
the person who is polite and respectful but who still needs something explained three different ways before she gets it.
and I get the frustration, I really do.
but the next time you see a "total idiot" in public who clearly genuinely has no idea what's going on, please just try to remember that it sucks to be that person too.
and as someone who has no choice about being that person, it sucks to see post after post ripping into people for just being confused in public. Not rude or entitled, just confused.
Obvs I'm not saying people shouldn't vent or laugh online at anonymous strangers who will never see it. Especially when they ARE rude or entitled!
I just feel like I'm seeing a lot more posts about "stupid people" recently and half the time "being stupid" was the only thing they did to piss ppl off and...
Idk sometimes it just comes across as really mean.
If you knew that "stupid" person was confused bc they're disabled, would you be just as mean?
If not, please consider: why on earth would you expect to always know when a stranger in public is disabled?
People are generally trying their best. Even those who aren't disabled—u don't know what their day is like!
Do you think YOU could think clearly on the worst day of your life?
Have you ever been so upset you barely know what's going on? Ever had to run errands while coming off anaesthesia or while a loved one is dying or while your scary newly-ex is blowing up your phone with threats or god, even just when you'd been up all night and feel like shit?
Giving people grace when and how you can is an incredibly rewarding practice. I want us all to be given that grace when we most need it.
Star Trek as a franchise has 11 different tv shows and 13 movies, 2 timelines and it spams about 80 years now, so it can be a bit terrifying to get into. this is why ME, your local star trek nerd, has created a simple guide for you. There are hundreds of guides online but you should trust me instead.
unless you're used to watching really old tv shows (like the original Adam's family from 1964, or the first doctor from doctor who) you should not start from the original series. Yes its where Spock and Kirk are so this sucks, but the pacing is really weird and the acting is quirky at best. Odds are you will quit the show after a few episodes. watch another star trek show and then come back when you're insane. SO
If you want Spock and Kirk
i'd recommend starting with the JJ Abrams' Star trek (2009) and its two sequels. they aren't great if you're already a fan of the show, but for a new audience (like you!) they're really fun to watch and Chris Pine was born to play Kirk. In particular the 3rd movie (star trek: beyond) is a hidden gem and worth enduring the second movie for. The movies are the only thing on this list that aren't in the main timeline. If you want more Spock and Kirk you can then go back to the original show now that you're already in love with the cast OR you can follow along my guide <3
If you're used to 80's and 90's television:
and be honest! Every show on this category is 8 seasons long with 22+ episodes each, its a lot! if you're not used to watching long tv shows where most episodes are in a monster of the week format and character growth happens very slowly, skip to the next category!
here we have 3 options! All 3 are pretty great and considered peak star trek, so it really boils down to personal preference.
Star Trek: The next generation. It's a classic! Data is there for all your autistic little guy needs! I think TNG is where the soul of star trek really shines and it's a fan favorite for a reason. however season 1 is universally agreed as being pretty bad. it has its moments but i found it personally too boring. If you're cool with pushing through, you'll find gold thought. Watch if you want the classical Star Trek experience!
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. My personal favorite! The only reason i don't tell everyone to start here is that it's a bit of a weird place to start. DS9 is the only star trek that isn't set in a spaceship "boldly going where no man has gone before", and instead you follow along the lives of this space base at the edge of charted space. The characters are great, the political plot is really relevant today, it's the most left wing star trek gets, AND it's where tumblr's beloved Bryan Fuller, of Hannibal fame, started his career! Watch if you love weird found family and political intrigues!
Star trek: Voyager. the least beloved of all three, but still a masterpiece! It's set on a spaceship that got teleported to the other side of the galaxy, and their voyage home will take 80 years unless they find a shortcut. It's really sweet, and the emotional arc of all the characters are really beloved to me. However: the villains are really hit or miss, and they miss a lot, especially in the early seasons. Watch if you love characters fighting against impossible odds.
If you love trashy 2000s tv
Star trek Enterprise. Listen its bad. It's very much not good. It's also the best thing that i've ever seen and i think about it everyday. They have mpreg in the third episode. They have the best hate-to-lovers romantic arc i've ever seen. They have Space 9/11 in the middle of a time war. it's just 4 seasons long and you follow the first ever human mission to outer space! It's so charming! This is like if star trek was a CW show meant for middle aged men but accidentally hit all the buttons for a 16 yo tumblr girly (gn). No one else on the planet will recommend that you start star trek by enterprise but I WILL. DO IT.
if you like the shorter season OR aren't sure if star trek is your thing
Star trek: Discovery is honestly the safest place to start! It's a great show with a great cast (Doug Jones AND Michelle Yeoh ????), it was created by Bryan Fuller (yes, of Hannibal fame), it has 5 seasons, but season 1 is self contained so you can just give it try. The only con is that it's too plot heavy, and I personally think star trek is better when its in a monster-of-the-week style. A younger Spock is in this one for season 2! Watch if you love war in space and really fun science fiction concepts.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This one is a bit of the best of both worlds because it's short and new (so good special effects and a fast pacing), BUT it's in monster of the week format! However. Spock is a main character here and he is straight, which sucks SO MUCH. BUT season 1 is a masterpiece in star trek so i can't not recommend it. Watch if you want the vibes from the original show but with the budget and pacing of a Netflix show, and if you can stomach straight Spock.
What else is left?
Star Trek has 3 animated series, 2 of which are masterpieces, but i don't think they're the best starting point. Star Trek: Prodigy is great, but it's also a children's tv show, so it's really different from any other st material. If you're really into animation or want to watch star trek with your kid, you should absolutely start by Prodigy! Star trek: lower decks, however, is really self referential and i think works best for star trek fans.
Star trek the animated series is probably the worst place to start. it's technically a continuation of the original show, the animation is REALLY low budget and it's just really weird. fun for parties and drinking games though! Any movie that isn't the 2009 movies and its sequels are continuations to the plot of tv shows, so i wouldn't recommend starting by any of them either. Star Trek: Picard is also not a great place to start, as its about the captain from The Next Generation after the show and all of the movies.
The most important part about star trek is to have fun and be a little bit horny! Each show has its ups and downs and there is no truly wrong way to join this universe <3 Remember, every single one of these shows was someone's first star trek! and live long and prosper!
please i love you i'm begging you bring back suspension of disbelief bring back trusting the audience like. i cannot handle any more dialogue that sounds like a legal document. "hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!
do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!
