ive been thinking a bit about like playing music and stuff and like why i have more fun playing certain things than other on the piano now, compared to like when i was actively practicing..

the stuff i just play now tends to be technically easier yea but also like emotionally/musically easier? like the melodies are clearer and like the “storylines” are clearer and stuff like that. it’s easier to tell where the music wants to go, so it’s just easier to get into it

the pieces where it requires more buy-in or build up, they’re harder for me to get into..i mean i guess it makes sense that they would be. like it requires some effort to feel how the music feels and where it wants to go and stuff like that. but it can be rewarding and sometimes it’s like the more technically fun stuff to play

anyawy ive been thinking about that for maybe a few weeks now and i just realized i wonder if there’s some parallels i can make with that and also other issues im trying to figure out in my life lol. like the thing that are less confusing, maybe have more trodden paths (cus they’re more societally normal) are just easier to think about and figure out. compared to other things. :^P anyway this parallel could be useful because from high school i know what it’s like to like work on a piece of music and kind of figure it out, like getting from that confused point to a point where i feel more synchro’d with the piece. so with that in mind i can maybe persevere with the other annoying issues in my life to get to the point where im more in tune with things. and also maybe broaden my musical repertoire too lol instead of being so lazy and just playing the easy part of the how to train your dragon soundtrack over and over blerghh i guess it’s all just like. commitment, like if i knew i was dedicating this amount of time then i’d be more willing to put some work in on the ones that dont come as easy...

Hi Wawa! I found your queer terminology post really informative as a fellow Chinese diaspora and asexual. Maybe you don't know this but are there any terms for aroace in Chinese? Or romantic orientations in general? Thanks!

Yeah!

"Aroace" would be "无浪漫无性恋（者)" (the 者 is optional. You can can just add it after the orientation to make it clearly referring to a person. 浪漫 means "romantic".

I guess I can just make another list to go over a few more specific terms. I will include a quick recap of all the terms. Refer to the previous post for synonyms and other slang. The official terms are all borrowed from English as loanwords or similar translations.

Orientation: 倾向 (qīng xiàng) (used more for romantic orientations as it describes inclinations and tendencies). E.g, 双性浪漫倾向 (Biromantic/Biromantic orientation). You would use 偏 (piān) to describe preference in orientation. E.g, 双偏同 (Bi leaning gay).

Sexual orientation: 性取向 (xìng qǔ xiàng) (取向 also means "orientation", as in direction).

Romantic orientation: 浪漫倾向 (làng màn qīng xiàng) (also any other word for "romantic" like 爱 or 感情倾向... it's all the same)

Queer: 酷儿 (kù'er) (loanword)

Nonbinary: 非二元 (fēi èr yuán) (“non” “binary” direct translation)

Genderqueer: 性别酷儿 (xìng bié kù'er) (“gender” “queer” direct translation)

Transgender: 跨性别 (kuà xìng bié) (跨 means “to step across” or “to straddle”)

Agender: 无性别 (wú xìng bié）(无 means “not to have” or “no”/“lacking”)

Homosexual/homosexuality: 同性恋 (tóng xìng liàn)

Homoromantic: 同性浪漫 (tóng xìng làng màn)

Gay: 男同性恋 (nán tóng xìng liàn)

Lesbian: 女同性恋 (nǚ tóng xìng liàn)

Bisexual: 双性恋 (shuāng xìng liàn)

Biromantic: 双性浪漫 (shuāng xìng làng màn)

Pansexual: 泛性恋 (fàn xìng liàn) (泛 is a transliteration of “pan-” and has the same meaning of ‘general’ or 'extensive’).

Panromantic: 泛性浪漫 (fàn xìng làng màn)

Asexual: 无性恋 (wú xìng liàn)

Grey-asexual: 灰色无性恋 (huī sè wú xìng liàn) (direct translation)

Aromantic(sm): 无浪漫 (wú làng màn)

Demisexual: 半性恋 (bàn xìng liàn)

Demiromantic: 半浪漫 (bàn làng màn)

Polysexual: 多性恋 (duō xìng liàn)

Polyamorous: 多元之爱 (duō yuán zhī ài)/ 多边恋 (duō biān liàn) (two different direct translations basically; one is ("poly-" "amorous", the other is "multi-lateral" "attachment")

Anything more niche than the above, I don't really know, but it is honestly probably on the Chinese language wikipedia.

Oh and for good measure I guess:

Heterosexual: 异性恋 (yì xìng liàn) (异 means "other"/"hetero-")

Heteromantic: 异性浪漫 (yì xìng làng màn）

Cisgender: 顺性别 (shùn xìng bié) (顺 means "to follow")

Bisexual is 双性恋, or just "双". 双 means two so it's basically the exact same meaning as "bisexual".

I guess since you asked, I'll just go through some basic/popular terminology real quick:

General terms:

同性恋 (tóng xìng liàn) = homosexual ; homosexuality

同志 (tóng zhì) = (lit.) comrade; (slang) gay/homosexual

You can add "男" (male) or "女" (female) in front of either of these two phrases to specify gay vs lesbian.

酷儿 (kù'er) = (loanword) queer

A lot of general modern LGBT terminology is borrowed from the west, i.e, "出柜" (chū guì ; to come out of the closet" or 弯 (wān; "bent"); 直 (zhí; straight).

Lesbian

女同性恋 (nǚ tóng xìng liàn)/女同(志) (nǚ tóng zhì)/ 拉拉 (lā lā) / 百合 (bǎi hé; "lily")

P = 婆 (pó; "wife)/femme

T = Tomboy/butch

H = "half", or 不分 ("doesn't separate") = a lesbian who doesn't differentiate these categories or doesn't identify with either P nor T

Gay

男同性恋 (nán tóng xìng liàn)/男同(志) (nán tóng zhì)

EDIT bc I forgot: 基友 (jī you3) meaning “gay partner” or “close samesex friend” (often for servicemen/firemen/police) is also a common term

零 (líng; 0); 受 (shòu ) = bottom

一 (yī ; 1); 攻 (gōng）= top

0.5, 10, 可攻可受 (kě gōng kě shòu), 兼备 (jiān bèi) = versatile

There's a lot of numbers involved. If you see stuff like 101 or 001 etc these are just referring to the "roles" in a threesome, etc. Numbers are sometimes also used for lesbians, where T = 1, P = 0, and H = 0.5, but I feel like this is less common. The thinking is a little binary in this regard but adherence to this ~structure~ is really case by case, just as it is in the west with tops vs bottoms in LGBT culture.

Within P/T/0/1/etc slang, there are also adjectives that may be added in front of these classifiers. Ex: 肌肉0 (muscular bottom); 公0 (manly bottom), 大母/母0或大母1 (effeminate bottom or effeminate top); 铁T (iron butch; basically super/manly butch)... It's all really arbitrary stuff, sort of like "twink" and "bear" and all that.

Bisexual: 双性恋, 双 (shuāng).

Pansexual: 泛性恋 (fàn xìng liàn) (泛 is a transliteration of "pan-" and has the same meaning of 'general' or 'extensive').

Nonbinary: 非二元 (fēi èr yuán) ("non" "binary" direct translation)

Genderqueer: 性别酷儿 (xìng bié kù'er) ("gender" "queer" direct translation)

[Anecdotally I would speculate that "pansexual", "nonbinary" and "genderqueer" are not popular self-designations as I have never seen them being used online outside of LGBT resource literature taken from the west]

Transgender: 跨性别 (kuà xìng bié) (跨 means "to step across" or "to straddle")

Asexual: 无性恋 (wú xìng liàn) (无 means "not to have" or "no"/"lacking")

Misc

第四爱 (dì sì ài; "the fourth love") sometimes gets brought up in discussion of LGBT terms (although by western standards, it's really completely unrelated). It sort of has a broad meaning but usually it just refers to pegging with a female top and male bottom. I think this might be more of a term from fiction because it's often brought up with other fictional concepts like Alpha and Omega.

My only addendum at this point is that 第四爱 (from misc) is not from fanfiction as I first wondered, although it still gets wrapped up in discussion of lgbt/queer acceptance due to its flipping of perceived gender norms (altho again, to most of us it probably doesn't seem like a big deal).

Another slang to know is that online, 通讯录（tong4 xun4 lu4; "address book") may be referring to gays. This is just a joke that comes from the close pronunciation of the two words.
