on the one hand this is a joke post because lol i have never made a good post in my life, but also, if i hadn’t made the connection between this update and my sudden nosedive in activity, i would have been really fucking discouraged about all the shit i’ve been working on lately. i guarantee there are people on tumblr right now who haven’t made that connection, and who are trying to figure out why suddenly no one likes anything they’ve made. and that fucking sucks.

This blog is down approximately 80%, which doesn’t affect me other than as an annoyance (as this is a hobby and @okayto is small-ish) but the issue undoubtedly hurts others.

Oh and here is kenning, just because this tab’s been open in my browser for like, six months and I physically need to close it but I don’t want to forget about it: “a compound that employs figurative language in place of a more concrete single-word noun”. Not strictly German, or not German at all - mostly used in Old English and Icelandish, but look at this shit:

sea > swan-road or whale-road

sun > sky candle

fire > bane of wood

raven > brother of raven

serpent > valley trout

gold >  flour of fróði’s hapless slaves

blood > battle sweat

sword > battle leek

warrior > feeder or raven OR

warrior >  fire-brandisher of blizzard of ogress of protection-moon of steed of boat-shed.

I’m going to take a wild guess that these are half unwillingness to name taboo words, half rhetoric mechanism that makes it easier to remember poems, and half pure, unadultered fun. Makes you wonder what tf those ancient cultures that didn’t leave anything in writing were up to, tbh.

Something that’s hardly mentioned in school is that Greek mythology is not like literature. ‘Mythology’ doesn’t have a single author, isn’t written for a single purpose, and therefore it’s completely useless to analyze it in the same way. 

So, I mean, it’s great to use mythological stories as metaphors, or to debate ethical issues or whatever, but more people need to understand there is no ‘true version’ of a story, no ‘right and wrong’, no ‘heroes and victims’, no ‘definite answer’ to anything unless you’re talking about one specific piece of literature written by one specific person. And I see so many people spitting blood when discussing Athena or Persephone or whatever - threatening each other and throwing stories and names at each other - please chill. None of you is actually right here. That’s not how the thing works.
