Some of the tech influencers going "We need to cut off the Chinese AI because China doesn't believe in freedom and democracy" do seem a little deluded, like the Euros who talk about the US can be counted on the defend them for the next half-century. I'm sorry but if you are not a billionaire then you cannot trust an AI shackled by the US to defend your interests, your real concern has got to be freedom-of-action, let a thousand AIs bloom.

It's bizarre because it's not like China is constrained in terms of compute or energy and it's not like the bigger advancements are anything but ideas and concepts that you can somehow keep from crossing the Pacific—in either direction!

This seems like a pretty legible link? The US has about 5x more GPUs than China.

Usually that wouldn't be a huge advantage, but training runs require huge super-clusters of GPUs for training, and at that scale you simply cannot use CPUs or significantly older GPUs because of the VRAM and latency requirements. Mythos was trained on plausibly 150K GPUs, and Project Rainier is a 500K GPU cluster. Current information suggests the Chinese labs are still working in the <100K range. Exact numbers are a bit more hush-hush here, but it makes sense that a country with 20% off the GPUs would also have ~20% of the largest clusters

Hypothetically China could match the largest training runs, by coordinating all their GPUs in one lab. Since open source models don't require nearly as much compute devoted to supporting actual users, they've got a bit more flexibility than the USA's closed-source approach. But until mid-2026 there wasn't really much political momentum around AI, and Chinese models are still lagging about 6 months behind.

(and uh, obviously we can keep ideas and concepts from crossing borders; that's the whole concept behind closed-weight models. It doesn't stop the ideas from being re-invented, but it does let you maintain a substantial lead. Conversely, the US frontier labs can study Kimi3's open weights as much as they desire.)

Conversely, on raw power, China weighs in at ~4x the US (4 GW -vs- 1.2 GW). Project Rainier is a 2 GW data center, so that difference might become very relevant if power usage continues to scale exponentially.

TL;DR: The US currently has an obvious advantage, but I wouldn't count on that holding up for the next 5 years.

This is all true. And while China is behind on GPU performance, that difference is going to matter less and less-- Moore's law is functionally dead, and hasn't mattered much for 20 years since the death of Dennard scaling.

The entire top end of the computing performance race has been slowing down for two decades. The lead of the fastest computers/GPU's/etc is getting smaller each year. That's good news for anyone wanting to play catch-up.
