Shout out to @urbanamazon for making me think about the future for Will and Mack after the sun doesn't give light to the moon assuming the moon's gonna owe it one, so spoilers under the cut—
Like, immediately after the ending, Will finally lets himself cry for the first time. And Mack asks if he can hug him and he’s so cautious about it like “It’s okay if you say no.” Mack’s just going to be so agonizingly careful with Will. Like it’s going to take months for them to even be able to casually show physical affection to each other, much less anything beyond that. The first time they actually kiss? Will’s going to have to be the one who initiates because Mack would never. But the way Mack’s heart would just genuinely explode when he finally does…
And slowly, over time, Mack is able to show Will that love is real and it’s something he deserves and it’s something he doesn’t have to work for. That it’s unconditional. Will doesn’t owe Mack anything. And it’s an active effort for Will to keep reminding himself of that. And eventually, somewhere down the line, maybe he actually starts believing it.
And also I don’t think they ever have sex? I think Mack is really fine with that, because as long as Will sleeps curled up in his arms every night safe and warm, and as long as he can tell Will he loves him and have Will smile softly at him and say it back, it’s enough.
