Something that always sticks with me about A Clockwork Orange (the novel) is that rape (and there is a lot of rape) is consistently treated as an act of violence and dominance and power, not an act of uncontrollable lust like it is portrayed in a lot of literature written by shitty old dudes. I know it is influenced by the author’s wife’s violent assault during the war. Sexual violence is a supreme form of violence purely for the sake of violence. It is ultraviolence. It is a destroying force. It is something the teenage protagonist inflicts on girls and women with forethought and an explicit desire to harm. I am reminded of it every time I consume another piece of media where a woman is raped, so often the motivation is treated as one of uncontrollable desire and it fails to acknowledge the seriousness of the lifelong consequences. Alex returns and F. Alexander’s wife is dead because of their actions, the man is destroyed in mind and body. We got a glimpse into Alex’s motivations for repeatedly doing it and we saw the years of damage he did in a 48 hour period.

I’d like to add that the movie is not a very good adaption of the book. I love the movie, I love Malcolm McDowell’s performance, Wendy Carlos’s score is my favorite movie score of all time, the costuming and sets were amazing! Stanley Kubrick did nottt grasp the book and the rape scenes are done in a way that that comes across as tonally flippant and theatrical (literally) and gratuitous to a lot of viewers. I love the book, I still love the movie. It is a terrible adaption of the text in my opinion. It is exactly what I would expect out of Stanley Kubrick. He struggles with nuance. My opinion.

I love when people who aren't from Arizona try to draw/paint/model cacti, especially saguaros because god. It's always so bad. Look at this.

All due respect Mr. Joy of Painting but that saguaro is ILL. That thing is on death's door. At LEAST 175 years old. He describes it as a big one that got a lot of sun and nourishment and like no I don't think it did!! I think it's fucking dead, dude!!! They only look that skinny when they're about to DIE.

I also wanna stress for those who don't know, contrary to what most assume cacti are fucking heavy. A full grown saguaro can grow to be 20ft tall and weigh as much as a car, 3000-4000lbs, and a single arm can weigh as much as 600lbs and will kill you if it falls on you, not from the spines, but from the weight of the impact alone. A cactus is mostly water, and water is HEAVY. They're also THICK, like I legit couldn't even get my arms halfway around the one in the picture above. They are so goddamn big.

Bob Ross' cactus, by contrast, appears to be constructed out of twigs and prayer and looks like if it fell on you it wouldn't even weigh enough for the spines to break your skin.

this may seem like an overreaction or a bit of a heavy topic to drop on a post about cacti but this belief many people have in the lack of large lush green healthy biodiversity is a thing rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of what desert ecosystems are facilitated by colonialism racism and westward expansionism the kind that folks in the southwest are incredibly familiar with

hell people well respected artists even tend to have a frontiersman boner about coming out to the southwest just to paint the same 3 pieces of barren dehydrated empty wild west poverty porn as if we dont have sprawling cities as if the indigenous people out here didnt have sprawling cities as if the land is something we are all desperately fighting against and not that which gives us life

and its understandable that many folks dont recognize this kind of idolization of the desert as an empty untameable landscape as the colonialist eco racism it is after all again the southwest really does not ever get depicted in any other way in media new mexicos most famous show is about meth and poverty arizonas most famous landmark is a canyon nevada is quite literally the setting for one of the most popular games about nuclear fallout but all of these places are rich in life and biodiversity they always have been and its these kinds of unchecked biases that lead people into having fundamentally flawed and racist and incomplete views and beliefs on the genocide of the native americans

Not derailing, a very good point, even if I find it a bit funny it's a symptom of a much larger problem. Tbh, I focused on the cactus, but I don't really know anywhere in Arizona or New Mexico that looks like the painting he made. He didn't mean anything by it and I assume Mr. Paints Mountains and Forests was failing out of a lack of practice more than a lack of caring, but I have said before the same issue with people viewing Australia as a barren wasteland where no one lives, The desert southwest in America is treated as barren when it very much isn't, and it speaks to a lot of ignorance and racism to assume this land was or even is empty. It's not, Sonora alone is a lush desert with an entire monsoon where it rains nearly every day for three months, and there are plants and people in the Mojave too. People thrived living here, and tbh 90% of what sucks about this place is that it was built by white people who wanted to live somewhere like Maine and thought in their racism and ignorance that a fucking lush desert could be beaten into submission when it can't, and it's made this place so much less habitable. If we just listened to the indigenous people and copied their building techniques things would be way better.

But yeah, these places are far from empty and assuming they are shows you're unwilling to take these places as important parts of earth with loads of unique creatures and plants (the only venomous lizard in North America lives here!!) and value and cultural significance, and is racist and contributes to colonialism. It's not barren, it's bursting with life, and people who love and value that life, and know that it's worth portraying properly and with care.

Next level to this is moving away from analyses like "they don't value me as a friend" and considering interpretations like "they may have difficult and/or important things going on in their life that I don't know about" and in most cases settling on "i don't know them well enough to really know what's going on with them" and then to accept that that's okay.

This is something I’ve been rotating in my mind for a couple of weeks now. My brain is fully in “you’re being melodramatic and imagining things” mode re: Tony.

The fact that I cannot confidently say whether or not there was real sexual threat is probably justification enough for having baggage about it. An unwelcome hand on my thigh should not have been ambiguous in intent or linger more largely in my unhappy memories than sexual assault. If there were truly no strings attached, that should have been made explicitly clear to me—my uncertainty and suspicion should have been anticipated and reassured!

It’s possible (even probable!) that no sexual currency was expected. But somehow that doesn’t actually make it feel any less objectifying. It’s not a crime to project an ill-fitting persona upon a young person and expect them to conform to it—happens constantly. My own family does it. But Tony was not my family and had no entitlement to my personhood that he hadn’t literally purchased, so it felt so much more obvious and violating when he objectified me that way. He’d literally clap his hands over his ears and shout to drown out my voice when I tried to correct his impressions of me… I started to tell him that I was attracted to women once and he practically ran out of the room with his ears shut going “LA LA LA LA NO DON’T SAY ANOTHER WORD!” like fucking. Pee Wee Herman. Lmao.

He didn’t technically abuse me but he did hire me for a secret job, which was to be a Promising and Gifted Young Person™️ he could emotionally and financially invest in. My duties included embodying an idealized femininity and youthfulness and reassuring him that his influence would be a counterbalance to his mortality. I was supposed to be his muse, a balm to his loneliness, and his shot at a legacy. I was supposed to reflect back to him a sweeter, hopeful, unblemished version of the world.

And I fucking hated it! I had my own fucking problems. He wanted glistening ingenue to put on a pedestal and he got some kind of haunted, cynical gender failure whose greatest ambition was to find some sort of grenade to jump on.

I'm curious about Scott's pov immediately following the leak. He must have known the metros wouldn't be supportive to push into their locker room. Had he had time to learn about Hayden's texts, or did he put it together based on the game they'd just played?

He’d put it together based on Shane’s ice shifts.

Like. The whole NHL knows that something happened this season that pissed the Metros coach off so bad he was willing to publicly go after the darling of the entire League. Which like. Is incredibly risky. Hockey fans are fucking dedicated to their favorite player. Shane was the most popular player in the fucking league. He was so popular that his existence and the impending Shandry baby had caused a noticeable uptick in League-wide viewership.

Going after Shane Hollander should be career-ending for that coach. Like. The Dallas Stars coach publicly slighted Jake Oettinger during the 2025 playoffs and they fucking fired him. To be clear, he claims it was because he couldn’t get them to the Stanley cup, but every single news outlet I saw ran with the story that his treatment of Oettinger was a key factor.

Fans are attached to the players, not the coach. Shane’s coach is playing with fire and everyone knows it, including him. He just hates Shane enough to do it anyway. And no one could figure out why, except for Scott Hunter.

Because Scott Hunter already knew that Shane Hollander was queer.

Scott’s suspected Shane had been outed and his team was retaliating against him for months. His coach was on a tear and no one but Hayden or J.J. seemed to be pushing back or supporting him on the ice. But Shane didn’t reply when he reached out, and no one could get anything out of the rest of the Metros.

Even if Scott was wrong about the rest of the team was retaliating against him for his sexuality, they were obviously after him for something, and Shane had just been outed in the middle of a fucking press conference. Scott knew they wouldn’t have his back because they hadn’t had his back all season.

Shane’s been living Scott’s personal nightmare of 10+ years this season, and Scott knew it. And in that nightmare, as he imagined it, as he thought it would go, Scott himself was always alone. He didn’t want Shane to be alone. So he forced his way into the locker room.

let's hear it for Jackson lee. Jackson lee, the guy who is going to cross the picket line when he doesn't know a single person on the other side. I hope this acts as a one of those psychological trigger, where as soon as one person breaks the mold it's easier for other people to follow in their footsteps. But even if it doesn't, it still means something.

I want to talk about how it interacts with vaughn's article, but I feel I can't do that without rereading which I don't have time for. But I still wanted to drop my compliments on a chapter that made me cringe backwards into my chair while reading about Shane's "breedable form" and "how great it is that he's been outed for him." The masses think they're the white knights when they're one of the hydras shanes fighting, rip.

Also, interesting to see your blog get flooded with your latest fandom. I wonder how many of these people are new readers! Hope they go check out your other fics, I love how hot new big ticket fandoms can act as gateways to a new fic writer.

See I really wanted one of the first characters to join the strike to be someone who came from absolute left field, no personal ties to Shane or Ilya, no incentive to do this beyond a genuine belief in what was happening. I wanted him to be so far out of left field that he wasn’t even a blip in canon. Because the thing is that this is problem is bigger than Shane Hollander or Ilya Rozanov. It has happened to more than just them. They’re just the ones that are finally big enough to hear about.

I don’t think we’ll ever know how many queer athletes got forced out of and erased from sports. It’s happened, but it’s happened quietly. Everyone averts their eyes until it’s over, and that’s exactly what the NHL is trying to convince everyone to do now. Avert your eyes, let the sham investigation proceed, and let something else consume your attention. By the time they force them out completely, you’ll be too far removed from it to still care.

And that formula works. Megacorps and massive entities like the NHL have a tried and true formula of just waiting the outcry out. They don’t need to win over the public. They just need the public to stop paying attention. They do it all the time. Fuckin—look at the Netflix password sharing ban. They announced it, everyone got angry, they hurriedly walked it back… for a month. And then they rolled it out anyway, because people had stopped paying attention and they had new things to be angry about.

They already have the power to do what they want to do. They do not need to convince the public to agree with them to do it. They just need them to avert their eyes long enough for them to get away with it.

Jared’s experience would have been Shane’s if Shane hadn’t been so popular. Or it would have been Shane’s if it had just been earlier in his career.

The attention around Shane is exceptional. The rule is that everyone just keeps their head down and lets it happen. Thats how it always goes.

And that’s fucking loss. How many queer athletes have we lost because they got forced out? We won’t ever know. Because queer tragedy has always been defined by silence.

The Nazis put thousands of queer people in concentration camps, and then when those camps were liberated the Allies transferred the people wearing the pink triangle to civil prisons to finish serving their sentences for the crime of being gay. And then just left the pink triangle off the Dachau monument. Guess their deaths didn’t get to be a tragedy. They just were meant to disappear. The AIDs crisis was so bad because public officials just ignored it. It took six years and thousands of deaths for the government to even acknowledge what was going on.

Queer people die in silence. Jared died in silence. The NHL wants fucking silence, because that’s how Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov go away too.

The NHL does not need to get people to agree with it. All they need to do is to get them to look away. That’s how this always goes.

The loss is still there after. It’s always fucking there. And the NHL is riddled with holes from the loss of thousands of queer athletes we’ll never have. It’s just that no one talks about it.

So I made Jackson. A rookie who probably had nothing special going for him. He wasn’t talented enough to be drafted out of high school. He doesn’t have anyone else on his team backing him. He doesn’t have a fanbase at his back. He doesn’t even know the people who the strike is for.

But his friend was erased quietly, and he has never, ever gotten over that. It hurts every day. It took him fifteen minutes to publish the tweet admitting that his friend was dead. That was a two sentence tweet. There is a fifteen minute gap in the time stamps because it hurt too much to type it two years later. His character is defined by an unbearable loss that has existed this whole time just out of anyone’s sight.

Until he saw it start to happen again. Until he saw people start to look away from Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov the way they did from Jared.

He broke the silence. He said it for them. Everyone knows what’s really happening, and they’re looking away. Everyone knows this is bullshit. And suddenly it’s not so easy to get everyone to look away from Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. Because someone finally said the quiet part out loud.

And it is meant to interact with Carter’s article! Carter is an example of another guy who broke the silence.

To be clear, I did not make up the Pride tape ban. That’s a real thing that happened in 2023. And Carter’s resistance was real too. Pride Tape was banned, and a real life player named Travis Dermott said “okay bet” and used the tape anyway.

He played a game of chicken with the NHL and won. The ban got a smattering of bad press from the jump, but he was the one who said “fine. Go ahead and punish me for using the tape.” And the NHL folded and repealed the rule in like 72 hours rather than deal with the backlash that came with punishing him.

If every single player in the NHL complied with the ban, pride tape may still be banned. But it’s not. Someone broke the silence and got everyone watching, and that made it harder to get rid of.

And yeah, there’s a LOT OF NEW FACES here suddenly. I honestly wasn’t really expecting this one to get so big. Hopefully everyone likes it here
