Oh are there people who don't know this mess of a movie has the all time most spectacular final wizard battle in the fantasy genre??
once again thinking about "the lottery" by shirley jackson.
imagine there was a man in the story who went around giving speeches about the importance of the lottery as a tradition. He said the casualties were unfortunate, but also an inevitable price of freedom. Imagine he treated those who sought to end the senseless cycle of violence with condescension and derision, calling them idiotic, naïve, and diseased.
yet when that man was selected for the lottery and stoned to death, everyone mourned him and said how unfair it was that a bright young family man should die so soon. And when people pointed out that this man was killed by a system he adamantly defended and worked to perpetuate, they lost their jobs and were shunned from the community as insensitive and monstrous.
Imagine. Hypothetically. For no particular reason.
To my great dismay I unfortunately really really like Nintendo games and so deeply deeply hate Nintendo
you have permission to start birding without knowing anything about identifying birds
As someone who recently picked up birding, and have been super casual about it. I second this. I've just been enjoying looking at the birds around me and learning how to notice them more. Even if I can't identify anything, or I'm unsure because two or more species look similar, I still enjoy just.... Watching nature come and go (including while I'm working at my day job on the 4th floor in a downtown office. So many birds on the windowsills and I don't have time to identify them. Just noticed and appreciate them!)
Fun tips for anyone who wants to get started with identification!
1. Download this guy:
It can identify bird calls and there's a step by step visual identification thingie
2. Do NOT listen to snooty old white man birders who will expect you to know everything about birds, and who care more about getting a good picture than enjoying the experience. I saw a whooping crane a few months ago (!!!!!!!) and I was SO excited, and when I mentioned it to some snooty old white man birders they were like "Yeah I've seen one." I was literally in tears when I saw this bird, and they were such spoilsports about it.
3. Birding has become a lot more popular with both young people and people of color, so if it's something you'd like to do with other people try to track a group down in your area. I personally like to go out alone, but you can learn a lot from other people (who aren't snooty old white men).
And 4. Even if you don't get serious about it it's a great way to appreciate the world around you! You can't tell a chickadee from a blue jay? That's fine! But just noticing the wildlife around you absolutely makes the world feel just a little more magical.
The trick with old white guy birders is to ignore the snooty ones and find the ones who will consensually kidnap you and take you to see cool birds.
A guy I worked with told me about the time he was an incredibly awkward teenager living in the middle of nowhere with no friends back in the late 90s. He liked being outside, so his parents forced him to join the local birding club for birding walks every Saturday. He was the only person under 60 so the whole group ADORED him and were super excited to show him all the ropes. He ends up getting really into it and joined the club for real.
Fast forward a few months and he's called to the principal's office where he's informed that there has been a family emergency and Grandpa Ron is coming to pick him up. He's thoroughly confused and worried because he doesn't have a Grandpa Ron.
He's just about to saying something to the principal when up pulls Ron from the birding club along with several other members. Apparently there was an incredibly rare bird seen several hours away and Ron had gotten permission from my coworker's mom to break him out of school and drive halfway across the state to go see it. His mom had called it in as a family emergency because she didn't want his attendance impacted.
My coworker ended up seeing the rare bird as well as watching a batch of the snooty birding types nearly come to blows over descriptions of the wing bars on said rare bird.
The fun thing about Queer as an identifier is they cant chop you off or reorganize you into obscurity. Queer is for everyone. You cant cut the T off of a Q.
Legitimately this is exactly why “queer is a slur” is a TERF dog whistle. They don’t want people reclaiming queer because queer is too inclusive for them to easily exclude people
The thing is I don’t identify as queer because I don’t want people to hyperanalyse me and put me in boxes, I identify as queer because I have no fucking idea what‘s going on with me.
And honestly, normalise not knowing what the fuck is going on with you. I know there are people who seem to have it all figured out. But don’t worry. Because they don’t. There’s always some new situation that might make everyone question what is going on and why they are feeling the way they do.

Yeaheyah you get it. Not trans but i believe in their beliefs. Sometimes i remember people form gender complexes around what alcoholic beverages or colors they like and i just wonder how they’re not fucking exhausted from keeping up this stupid fucking horseshit. Just do whatever you want forever

you do not need those full-body deodorant products. i promise
nobody was buying or selling this shit before like five years ago. if it was sold, it was a niche product for people with really specific needs (ie, medical issues causing extreme sweating and/or body odor)
these companies are blatantly manipulating you with the oldest advertising trick in the book:
invent a fake problem
convince you that you HAVE this fake problem
"helpfully" sell you a product that claims to fix the problem
you do not have to feel embarrassed or ashamed of your body. you are not some rancid stinky beast who needs to be slathered with perfumes and fragrances just to feel comfortable out in public. your body is normal and there is no reason to be applying full-body perfumes to ward off normal human smells
and if they tell you to put it on/in your pussy. DO NOT do that. that company is LYING to you. it is not safe or gentle. do not perfume your vagina.
Something that people still do not understand about the pandemic is how much the data was just erased or skewed so that we would all go back to work. An entire generation is facing mass disability because of a *preventable* illness that is still circulating untraced and undocumented.
Disabled people tried to warn us.
Epidemiologists tried to warn us.
Historians tried to warn us.
But when the money stopped flowing, it didn’t matter anymore. The lives and the quality of life of the masses was considered the cost of business.
I don’t even know how to grieve when no one will even acknowledge it.
