just learned americans have different standard paper sizes than everyone else. what do you MEAN you don’t have A4 as the standard. what do you mean your standard paper size isn’t even the same size as an A4. apparently it’s like. ’letter’ and ’legal’ and whatever else. help!!!

So I work in engineering; and always wondered who used these weird “A” sizes I’d see in large printer settings that I’ve never seen any company even have paper in stock for. Now I know.

And now I have to be one of those obnoxious US Americans because WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU USE THESE WEIRD UNEVEN DIMENSIONS!? Even in metric most of the “A” settings are an annoying ratio! 210x297mm? 594x841mm!? What’s the point of using such small units of measurement if you’re not going to make sensible sizes!?

because the largest standard paper size is A0 which is exactly one square metre of paper with an aspect ratio of the square root of two. this gives us a nice simple measurement of area for the paper as well as allows us to do the halving/doubling magic. A1 is 0.5m², A2 is 0.25m² etc.

The halving/doubling magic that psychaun refers to is the fact that you can get each paper in the series by cutting the previous one in half. I fold some A4 paper in half, I have an A5 booklet. I tape two A4 pieces together along their long side, I have an A3 piece. Each piece of paper is half the area of the previous and half the width of the previous' length with a length the same as the previous' width. The aspect ratio is exactly the same for every size. This makes it very easy to resize things, fold things inside each other, and calculate the size of paper you've never used before based on its name. "I can resize this to fit any other paper size because the aspect ratio is identical," "I can fold a standard size in half to get the next standard size down" and "the area I'm working with can be multiplied up to fit into a metre squared without any messy fractions of leftover paper" are all far more practical considerations for a paper size than "the millimetre length of this paper size isn't a round number".

fyi there are also B sizes in paper, which fit in between the A sizes - less often used but good for book covers and stuff

a Bn size is the mean between An and An-1

and then C sizes for envelopes, such that a C4 envelope fits an unfolded sheet of A4 etc

When Sokka teams up with Zuko, they make a pretty good team, they can get stuff done, execute some pretty impressive schemes, but still end up needing the Deus Ex Mai-china to save them, and also the plot armor that Suki comes with for being a Kyoshi Warrior cause it means she can just Do Stuff like singlehandedly take the prison warden hostage. But with the combined strength of each braincell, together they manage to form a coherent thought or two. Still might almost drown in a boiling lake a couple of times but we'll give the execution of the Boiling Rock scheme a solid 7.5/10.

When Aang teams up with Zuko, they turn into Greg and Roderick. Emo older brother and his preppy little brother who loves pokemon or something. Together, they do not even have two braincells to rub together. They are absolutely hilarious, make no mistake. But dudes, if the Sun Warriors hadn't still been around in secret, they would've been fucked. I can picture Zuko on the ride back being like "Aang PLEASE don't tell Katara about the pit of spikes you almost fell into or how I picked up the glowing egg and got us stuck to a ceiling or she's never going to let me go anywhere with you again."

When Katara and Zuko team up they turn into an elite pair of high-profile hitmen. If it had been Katara and Zuko breaking into the Boiling Rock together, the episode would not have needed to be in two parts because they'd be in and out in an afternoon and still make it home in time for dinner.

So we're finally back home now, but about seven hours ago as of this posting, we were in a pretty bad car accident. We were, ironically, on our way to my mom's doctor to follow up on her discharge from the hospital earlier this week, and now she'll have to be seen for two separate ER visits, plus i have to figure out how to see my doctor, too (bless the person who took my call and told me my medical clinic has a free ride program for patients in a 14 mile radius...I just now have to get up early on Monday and make an appointment, but I don't need to wait two days for medical transport from my insurance at least)

My mom had neck pain and hip pain, and she's currently got a huge bruise on her hip because her car door was pushed in about six to eight inches from the impact. They actually had to saw off the door to be able to get it towed; fortunately, she was able to crawl over and get out on my side.

The woman who hit us was an older woman complaining of chest pain who started having a panic attack in front of me as I was fielding calls about the accident from the sheriff's office so they would know what to expect, but I was level-headed enough to try calling her son and daughter-in-law for her so they were aware of what happened. I got voicemails initially but the son did call back while the sheriffs were there, so he got details from them.

I was running on so much adrenaline I didn't realize how badly injured I was until about two hours after the fact. I ended up not being around my mom the first hour and a half I was there and then finally went into the ER after filing a claim and updating my mom's Facebook and informing my sister of what happened so they wouldn't worry. Nothing is broken, but my knee is banged up, my hips/lower back/right shoulder all hurt, and I still had to come home and make two different dinners and I have to clean out the tub before I can go soak in it, so I am stressed and tried and fucking sore.

Our car is absolutely totaled. As I said, they had to saw it off because of how far in it was pushed. I managed to get them to unlock all the doors so i could get my mom's walker out of the trunk, or else she'd be a complete shut-in because she has to use it when going outside our apartment. And the worst part is we just cut back on our insurance last month to save money, so we won't be able to get a rental car, and we may not get a payout from the insurance of the woman who hit us on top of things. So, we're really stressed right now.

On top of that, PayPal is fucking with both my mom's bank account and her PayPal account. They initially charged her $150 in two transaction and her bank declined them, so PayPal took them out of her balance and charged her two more times for $30 worth of charge. Her bank rejected those as well, so my mom's PayPal account is now $230 overdrawn for some weird reason. But on top of that, they pushed the $150 in charges again, so right now my mom is currently $451 for charges they're already taking out of her PayPal balance. So now PayPal is fucking us over as badly as her bank. Plus, I need $87 in my account in the next week to cover my PayPal overdraft or they'll send it to collections.

I'm just so tired of it all. I'm tired of things looking up a little and life kicking me while I'm down multiple times. I just...we need help. We need serious help. So please help if you can and reblog if you can't?

Sorry I didn't update sooner; I was trying to get all my Christmas posts up before the holiday was over, and my laptop is dead (for now) so I've been stuck on my phone and carpal tunnel/arthritis in my hands and wrists makes typing in general harder but it's worse on my phone.

Good news first: we got the car taken care of with the towing company. It ended up being the slightly higher amount, but they did waive the $300 in storage fees and I got to do one last check to make sure we got everything plus I took the disabled plates and my mom's favorite license plate holder off (we can turn the disabled plates into our local AAA and swap them out when we get a new car).

Also good news: my overdraft and PayPal debt have been covered, along with a few smaller bills that needed to be paid, and I negotiated smaller payments on some loans I have upcoming payments for.

Now the bad news: I can't use my laptop right now at all. The laptop keyboard is barely responsive (half the keys don't register they've been pushed when I push them). Most of my money in January is going to rent and my few loan payments/storage unit payment/internet & electricity, so I need to come up with some money to get it looked at. It's not a major issue, but it's going to make my hands hurt a lot more to be stuck on my phone. So any help covering that on top of saving up for Uber rides to get my daughter her medical treaments/saving up for a new car would be much appreciated.
