I think the most hilarious place to put Post-Canon Sokka would have been the university at Ba Sing Se. I think he would have made a great unhinged professor. Also, in true Sokka fashion, he should have completely dodged fame. Momo is more famous than he is.
He wants to demonstrate to the class how this thing called electricity works, so he's going to be bringing in a Firebender, so everybody be cool, we're all friends here... and in walks Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. One-time conqueror of the city. One of the students is currently writing an essay on how her brief rule of the city affected fruit trade. She says she considers the class to still be her subjects as she doesn't acknowledge any pretenders to any of her thrones, but for now you're exempted from bowing and "Your Highness" will do. It's a really interesting lecture.
"Okay, guys - hey, listen up, everyone - I won't be here next week, me and Aang are going to-" yeah right, sure, Professor Sokka knows the Avatar. Except, of course, the Avatar walks in sheepishly and says that Appa might have gotten into Sokka's hybrid crops, and then you all have to sit there and watch your professor chase the Avatar around with a sword.
One postgrad student is specializing in Water Tribe Cultures. She's currently studying the massive cultural shift that happened in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the war - oh, and Professor, I absolutely know that you're from the Southern Water Tribe, but it's just that the shift started with Master Katara, and of course I don't think that every person from the South knows one another haha it's just that I need to ask her some questions and I thought maybe you could help me write a letter or write a letter of introduction or...
Sokka looks at her blankly and goes "yeah, she's my sister. KATARA!" which is followed by a faint answering "fuck you!" from Somewhere and to the horror/elation of our postgrad, Master Katara bursts in and is promptly beaned in the head with a rock by Professor Sokka. Her brother. her hero and her professor are siblings and currently brawling on the floor.
Ok but Zuko using the knowledge he acquired during his banishment to help him as the Fire Lord. Like making small talk with Earth Kingdom dignitaries about their local foods that he enjoyed and even misses. Like having in-depth conversations with his captains about sea currents and navigation. Like, in the middle of a meeting with several high-ranking naval officials, pointing out flails in security, like how a person can cling to a Fire Nation ship for hours at a time, or climb aboard using hatches on the upper decks, or disguise themselves as a lower ranking guard with easily accessible spare armour….
Though none of his experiences can prepare Zuko for the long, awkward silence that comes after he admits to doing or at least knowing something illegal and/or completely buck wild
fire lord zuko: you should maybe revisit the security measures around the water ducts that the sealturtles use
northern water tribe leader: that’s not necessary, no one can survive submerged in the artic ocean for so many minutes
zuko:
zuko: remember that time the fire nation attacked you
Zuko: okay first you have to promise not to get mad
Earth King: Tell me about your first visit to Ba Sing Se.
Zuko:
Okay, but before all this:
Advisors: Princess Azula did perform the astounding feat of infiltrating Ba Sing Se…
Zuko: Huh? Oh, that’s not hard. It’s pretty nice, if you don’t mind the brainwashing, but you can’t get a spicy octopus for love or money. We ate so much jook. *shudders*
Advisors:… you got in too…. interesting.
*
Advisors: The mysterious Water Tribe city at the North Pole
Zuko: It’s a pretty place, if you like ice. Lots of sealturtles. They have a really nice little sort of sacred grove thing there, too, I kidnapped the Avatar from it once.
Advisors: …. we have some questions….
*
Advisors: We still have not found the Fire Lord’s secret supplier of new weapons -
Zuko: He’s at the Northern Air Temple. (Realizing they’re all staring at him) Oh, no, I haven’t met him personally, but I have friends who have. He sounds like a very interesting guy.
Advisors: SO MANY QUESTIONS
*
Zuko: (while directing post-war reparation efforts) Oh, and we need to send a lot of people to work on replanting the forest around this obscure village.
Advisors:…. may we ask why?
Zuko: Apparently the local panda spirit is pretty mad about having its forest burned down.
Advisors, now afraid to ask: ….Yes, Fire Lord.
*
Every now and then, the curiosity gets too much and they’ll bring up something like ‘legendary sand benders’ or ‘Southern Islands’ and Zuko invariably produces some tidbit of local knowledge (either his own or gleaned from the Gaang’s stories) and six Foreign Ministers have resigned in fear and the seventh one only barely held it together when Zuko greeted an envoy from a tiny, insignificant Earth Kingdom island with ‘Listen, I am really sorry about what happened last time, I hope the supplies I sent helped with the rebuilding, do you still have that giant eel thing?” IS THERE ANYTHING HE DOESN’T KNOW.
Advisor: Before we start the meeting, I’d like to address the anniversary of Captain Zhao’s mysterious disappearance…
Zuko: At least he died doing what he loved?
Advisor: What do you mean, died?

@aboutiroh A favorite of mine!
atla heritage post
Man do you ever think about how many places Zuko has broken into? Like
The Western Air Temple (twice), which was canonically built so that it could only be reached with airbending
(It’s also implied he broke into the other three too)
The Northern Water Tribe, whose defenses hadn’t been breeched in 100 years and was also currently under siege
Pohuai stronghold, which was on high red alert after capturing the fucking Avatar
Avatar Roku’s temple, mostly notable because he broke through a naval blockade to get there (dude wtf)
Lake Laogi, the secret underground headquarters of Ba Sing Se’s evil secret police that is also crawling with Earth benders
(Ba Sing Se at large doesn’t count since they forged their papers)
The Fire Nation capital’s prison, where the main threat to the Fire Lord’s rule (Iroh) was imprisoned for months
His own family’s vacation home (this isn’t an achievement I just thought it was funny)
A thousand+ year old sacred site dedicated the first firebenders that was also full of booby traps, Indiana Jones style, because why not
The Boiling Rock, the highest security prison in the Fire Nation
The headquarters of the Southern Raiders, an elite naval force on an island in the middle of nowhere
The Fire Nation’s royal palace, which was admittedly mostly empty at the time but still had Azula in it
His own family’s vacation home (again) after getting banished (again)
he’s…a rogue. How did I not realize that he’s a rogue. Who happens to firebend.
One of my favorite things about zuko is he thinks of himself as a failure for not being a firebending prodigy, but is actually INCREDIBLY competent (even prodigious!) At almost everything else
atla heritage post
one of my personal favorite dichotomies in atla is how iroh, once the top strategist and highest-ranking general of the fire nation, now directs all his energy and considerable tactical experience towards attempting to keep his teenage nephew from throwing himself into life-threatening situations AND IROH REGULARLY FAILS TO PREVENT HIM FROM DOING SO.
he lead a six-hundred day siege and now iroh can't keep up with a sixteen-year-old armed with two swords and a passionate deathwish. zuko's motto is "act first, think never" and he's running rings around his uncle. it's like!!! who's gonna come out on top, iroh's west point education vs. zuko's deep and abiding commitment to always choosing the stupidest possible course of action, and zuko manages to win every single time
y'all are straight up EVISCERATING that boy in the tags
