GIRLY, WHO WERE FREIA’S CANON EVENTS (if she had them yet)??? 😭

Thanks for the ask, girlie! Once again, I didn’t have everything mapped out ahead of time, but inspiration struck, and I was able to put together her canon event stories! I hope you enjoy it. Oh, and I also included info about Freia's monster form!

Freia takes on a more monstrous form as Spider-Orchid! In this form, she has two sets of long, arachnid arms sprouting from her back (complete with retractable claws), as well as four black eyes and facial markings that resemble those of the radioactive peacock spider that bit her. This earned her the nicknames “little bug”, “Bugs” & “Buggy” from her grandma, uncle & allies. Underneath is a peacock spiders image, for anyone curious.

And now on to her backstory and the canon events!

Canon event 1: Being raised by a relative: Freia was taken in and raised by her cunning but loving grandmother, Mayabelle, who’s an opinionated, very sharp-tongued, and witty old woman. Mayabelle (who's not even that old) often pretends to be weaker and slower than she truly is, both for exploitative reasons and for the lols (this facade inspired the mischievous Freia to put on her shameless “I’m just a girl 🥺😇” act during attempts to either appear falsely sweet & innocent, or to get out of trouble. It doesn’t always work, tho). Freia was frequently visited by her half-uncle Benji (short for Benjamin), who was not only a doting uncle but also the one who taught her crucial self-defense skills and introduced her to anarchistic, anti-government ideals.

Canon event 2: The death of Uncle Benjamin: Benji discovered Freia’s secret identity as Spider-Orchid some months before he was wrongfully shot in broad daylight by a corrupt police captain. After narrowly escaping police pursuit, Benji was tracked down by Freia, who found him bleeding in a dark alley. During their last conversation, he delivered the “with great power comes great responsibility” line. Watching her beloved uncle—who had loved her as if she were his own daughter—pass away in her arms scarred Freia for life; even years later, she still has dreams and nightmares about him.

Canon event 3: The death of a cop: With the full support of Mayabelle and her ever-reliable man-in-the-chair, Li, Freia set out on her revenge mission to track down her uncle’s killer. This brought about the day when the police captain arrived home to unexpectedly find the eerily calm Spider-Orchid waiting for him. She confronted him about the murder of Benji, unmasking her monstrous face (fully intent on replacing his usual smugness with sheer fear and horrifying him in his final moments) before taking the terrified captain’s life.

The death of Uncle Benji and his final words transformed her from a young hero who was hesitant to kill, into a remorseless, morally grey anti-hero who already had a body count prior to joining the Spider-Society. Spider-Orchid has a deep-seated distrust of the police and government, and she sometimes lets petty thieves go, particularly when the culprits are very young or have been compelled to steal due to unfortunate circumstances. She herself sometimes acquires things by using a five-finger discount (if you know what I mean), but she typically reserves this for larger businesses, as she believes in supporting small local enterprises.

Canon event 4: Upside-down kiss: Spider-Orchid shared the classic upside-down kiss with her universe’s Prowler (aka Hobie Brown), which happened one night while they were playfully bickering and bantering outside, having come across each other earlier during Spider-Orchid's patrol.

If this is the takeaway you get from how miles' relationship with gwen is portrayed then you're on the nose. It's because the writers made Miles seem more isolated and lonely in his own universe. Mind you, this is so that he could focus on developing a rose tinted lens of Gwen and make it seem like a crush. As if his own universe is boring and sooo dull without her just because being a Spiderman takes so much of his time that he barely has any friends so he has to hang onto that memory of her and only think about her despite in the end of ITSV he and ganke had the potential to be the best of friends but nooo! let's keep him lonely and isolated because he's soo into being Spiderman that he forgets that he's Miles Morales behind the mask! a person who should have a social life in his own universe!

If you think writing a black character leaving their community because they think it’s mundane and less interesting than whatever is the latter which prompts them to reach for the community that is hostile towards them is good writing I assure you it’s not.

I know it’s an interpretation/adaptation of the character, but still, they throw away his friendship with Ganke to make him seem more lonely to make leeway for gwen to be the one who can “fix” his lonely life. it’s really infuriating not to mention it kinda perpetuates the white savior trope. this is shown in ATSV, I remember there was a frame during the second movie when gwen came into miles' room and she was standing by the window with light emitting behind her meanwhile miles was by the door where there is no light source, showing how dull his room is until gwen came back. Symbolism am I right guys? gwen is miles' light in his lonely universe!!

and gwen too, was disregarded in her own universe. the writers shove her away from her bandmates who should be her best friends in the comics. Even before peter's death we can see her having good relations with them, as shown with how they were quick to greet her with smiles when she walked into the dance room/prom, you could tell they were probably her ride or die. Except you can't! because the movie only shows her relationship with her Peter and how she's male centered, you barely see her interacting with another girl her age in the span of two movies. Even after her peter's death the Mary janes still show care and concern for her, but gwen didn't, she completely shuts them out as if they were never her best friends in the first place. And it all just because she lost her one and only guy best friend and arguably crush? It seemed that way. Oh no!! now she doesn't have a crush! let's make her fall in love with the guy from another universe that she only spent a few hours/ a day with! yeah!! problem solved! let's make her forget that she can confide in her girlfriends! (the Mary janes) because she trusts the guy she only spent for a few hours/day more!

"Fun" (actually fucked up as fuck) fact that someone pointed out to me a while ago: Miles Morales is currently the only Black superhero in a romantic relationship with another Black character in mainstream comics.

How many Black love interests has Peter Parker/Spider-man had? Zero. Steve Rogers/Captain America? Zero. Wolverine? One - Storm from X-men. Tony Stark/Iron-Man? Zero. Marvel/DC has their white characters all mainly date other white people, but almost always has Black characters with non-black love interests.

T'Challa/Black Panther is one Black character who mainly dates Black women. I'm pretty sure the only reason why is because making the king of Wakanda not date Black women would be too suspect. His most well-known and longest relationship was with Storm who he was married to for second, but they're no longer together for some random reason and T'Challa has been single since, so it's literally only Miles/Spider-man and Tiana/Starling left…das it.

It's fucked that even ONE Black couple in a serious relationship is one to many for Ghostflower stans. They want the rare Black girl character being loved up on to be booted out to make way for yet another white one because if there's one thing media doesn't have enough of it's white girl and white women protagonists being centered or fawned over. Sure.

Obviously, interracial relationships are fine. But Marvel/DC definitely seems to have an aversion to portraying Black men and Black women together in love. There were racists who hated Storm and T'Challa together too by the way, I think it might be because a popular superhero Black couple could lead to more undeniably Black popular superhero children, and they do no want that.

So now another "fun" fact, the non-black writer for the comic Spider-man Reign 2, Kaare Andrews, is also the main artist for it. Spider-man Reign 2 is not Miles' main comicbook, his main comicbook is currently written by Cody Ziglar, who is doing a pretty brilliant job writing Miles. The plot for Spider-man Reign 2 is not worth summarizing in detail, it's a very horribly written au focusing on a dystopian world with an old Peter. Miles for some reason, was dragged into this mess as a guest star. In the latest issue, Kaare Andrews made the creative decision to strongly imply visually that Miles and Gwen were in a relationship - Gwen isn't mentioned by name - and had a child together, and then he proceeded to draw that child as *white* as possible. If you're wondering what kind of writer Kaare Andrews is, in the original Spider-man Reign comics that he created and wrote he had M.J. die of cancer by making Peter have radioactive sperm that M.J. was exposed to whenever they had sex. That last sentence is not made up or an exaggeration.

The conversation of diversity is always so frustrating with people who just don’t want to see it. Like as a white person, are you not bored only seeing white people in your media??? Don’t you want your media to reflect real life??? Which is really really diverse??? Rhetorical question, I know, because as I have said before, racists cannot think critically about the media consume.

It’s such a shame, because it’s not like its ghostflower shippers fault at the lack of diverse romance, all they do is like the ship that the ATSV writers fed to them. Except of course for the overtly racist ghostflower shippers, who throw a hissyfit at the idea of anyone but especially anyone POC being shipped with Miles. You just hate to see it :(

As for the last part, I do think I recall hearing about the radioactive sperm thing before at some point, what is bro on 😭 marvel should let me be a writer fr (i would be so bad at it i can barely write action and villains to save my life, but my characters are so cool and diverse and deep and itd be really really really funny i promise /j /lh /silly)

Also, it didn’t even seem like Gwen liked Miles romantically in ITSV so the whole romance thing going on in ATSV just felt out of place. Besides, they only knew each other for like two days at the most so the romance is so rushed that it puts Disney to shame. I’m aware that the movies were always supposed to be about their relationship but they portrayed it so poorly and even if they did a good job portraying it, I still wouldn’t ship them because Miles x Tiana.

It's been years since I saw the movies, but I think it's hella disrespectful to Black people that the ATSV writers didn't say that the trilogy is "about this Black kid overcoming obstacles, going against the system etc etc", BUT instead "nah, this whole trilogy is about "love" between this Black boy & some White girl"… like… no. Can't a Black person have their own show going on without a White person brought into the spotlight as well?!?

It pisses me off so much! Let it be about Miles (plus, well-written romance is usually best as a side plot to the main plot). But no, Blacks can't have shit without a White person all up in our business. And as a Black person myself, I can't see how tf Miles would ever want to date Gwen after what happened in the Spider-Society. There's a reason I shipped Miles with Spider-byte/Margo Kess (before I found out about Tiana) bc it made more sense & they did have a spark & a good time before Gwen decided that she couldn't have that (and I also didn't like the way Gwen pulled Miles away from Margo with her web like a leash, it didn't sit right with me, idk)

Why do I have this bad feeling that even if the writers had followed the comics & had Tiana in ITSV/ATSV, the writers wouldn't put much emphasis into the romance & maybe just kept it as a mini/micro side plot or "open to interpretation" bc heavens forbid that we see a Black girl getting attention

Hi Parker 👋🏽! I remembered that Chanel Gajowa has six extra eyes when she's Whiteface (cool as fuck btw), so I got really curious about if there's anything else unusual under the mask (like fangs, mandibles, markings etc), & if the transformation hurts. Also, can she retract the spikes on her back or are they kinda permanently out?

CONTENT WARNING FOR BODY HORROR STUFF AND REAL SPIDER IMAGES!!!

This is a REALLY good question. Honestly, I only really put the extra eyes there for aesthetic purposes, but the idea that they actually produce from her body is way more interesting and provides a much greater sense of body horror and an inhuman nature being adopted during the night (which I’m going for now that I’m revamping her to be much more horror movie-like)!

With that idea in mind I think it would make the most sense for her face to split open to accommodate chelicerae— spiders have these fang-tipped mouthparts instead of mandibles— and pedipalps, see below.

Naturally, that would be pretty painful because even if she has the symbiote healing factor and spider mutations that rush healing along even more, that’s still her face and her skin and that would hurt pretty bad. It’s not unbearable, thankfully. The worst part of it all in my opinion is that it’s pretty much entirely for the sake of extra disguise— a precautionary measure if the mask is ever lost (as I think it makes more sense for the suit to be fabric so she isn’t totally helpless if there’s a loud noise).

As for the spikes, not retractable! With how I’ve restructured her character writing to make it so that the obtainment of the powers was even more overtly traumatic and resulted very directly from actions done to her rather than for her (I’ll explain this more in-depth if you’d like!), it only makes sense in my opinion for certain aspects of the appearance of her source spider to be permanent fixtures of her body.

Also, the spikes are just really cool on the spider and I figured they’d be a gnarly look on a human being. Look at this weird dude.

This time, the upcoming Prowler!Hobie x Freia x Spiderpunk drawing got me overthinking how tf to draw & shade abs correctly & I got STRESSED TF OUT bc I've never drawn abs before in my life & I was STRUGGLING to follow ref pics 😅. I both love & HATE challenging myself to draw things I haven't tried drawing before. This time, the upcoming Prowler!Hobie x Freia x Spiderpunk drawing got me overthinking how tf to draw & shade abs correctly & I got STRESSED TF OUT bc I've never drawn abs before in my life & I was STRUGGLING to follow ref pics 😅. "Fun" (actually fucked up as fuck) fact that someone pointed out to me a while ago: Miles Morales is currently the only Black superhero in a romantic relationship with another Black character in mainstream comics.

How many Black love interests has Peter Parker/Spider-man had? Zero. Steve Rogers/Captain America? Zero. Wolverine? One - Storm from X-men. Tony Stark/Iron-Man? Zero. Marvel/DC has their white characters all mainly date other white people, but almost always has Black characters with non-black love interests.

T'Challa/Black Panther is one Black character who mainly dates Black women. I'm pretty sure the only reason why is because making the king of Wakanda not date Black women would be too suspect. His most well-known and longest relationship was with Storm who he was married to for second, but they're no longer together for some random reason and T'Challa has been single since, so it's literally only Miles/Spider-man and Tiana/Starling left…das it.

It's fucked that even ONE Black couple in a serious relationship is one to many for Ghostflower stans. They want the rare Black girl character being loved up on to be booted out to make way for yet another white one because if there's one thing media doesn't have enough of it's white girl and white women protagonists being centered or fawned over. Sure.

Obviously, interracial relationships are fine. But Marvel/DC definitely seems to have an aversion to portraying Black men and Black women together in love. There were racists who hated Storm and T'Challa together too by the way, I think it might be because a popular superhero Black couple could lead to more undeniably Black popular superhero children, and they do no want that.

So now another "fun" fact, the non-black writer for the comic Spider-man Reign 2, Kaare Andrews, is also the main artist for it. Spider-man Reign 2 is not Miles' main comicbook, his main comicbook is currently written by Cody Ziglar, who is doing a pretty brilliant job writing Miles. The plot for Spider-man Reign 2 is not worth summarizing in detail, it's a very horribly written au focusing on a dystopian world with an old Peter. Miles for some reason, was dragged into this mess as a guest star. In the latest issue, Kaare Andrews made the creative decision to strongly imply visually that Miles and Gwen were in a relationship - Gwen isn't mentioned by name - and had a child together, and then he proceeded to draw that child as *white* as possible. If you're wondering what kind of writer Kaare Andrews is, in the original Spider-man Reign comics that he created and wrote he had M.J. die of cancer by making Peter have radioactive sperm that M.J. was exposed to whenever they had sex. That last sentence is not made up or an exaggeration.

The conversation of diversity is always so frustrating with people who just don’t want to see it. Like as a white person, are you not bored only seeing white people in your media??? Don’t you want your media to reflect real life??? Which is really really diverse??? Rhetorical question, I know, because as I have said before, racists cannot think critically about the media consume.

It’s such a shame, because it’s not like its ghostflower shippers fault at the lack of diverse romance, all they do is like the ship that the ATSV writers fed to them. Except of course for the overtly racist ghostflower shippers, who throw a hissyfit at the idea of anyone but especially anyone POC being shipped with Miles. You just hate to see it :(

As for the last part, I do think I recall hearing about the radioactive sperm thing before at some point, what is bro on 😭 marvel should let me be a writer fr (i would be so bad at it i can barely write action and villains to save my life, but my characters are so cool and diverse and deep and itd be really really really funny i promise /j /lh /silly)

Also, the obsession some people have with always having the Black male character get together with a white female character—and losing their shit if said Black man dates a Black woman—stems from misogynoir. It perpetuates the racist idea that white women are the only acceptable or desirable partners, while portraying Black women (especially darker-skinned Black women, I've noticed) as undesirable and unworthy of love.
