College 101: Ask, Don't Tell

This advice is yet again brought to you by things my students do, to my ongoing bewilderment and frustration. Twice in a single day this week, I had students inform me (sic) that they will be (sic) submitting work that is 1-2 weeks late... in a course that only runs for 5 weeks. There is a clear late work policy in the syllabus. Strangely enough, this policy is not "do whatever, it's fine!"

Here's the thing: I'm happy to offer emergency extensions. Like many of my colleagues, I'm also perfectly happy to offer non-emergency extensions, as long as they're requested in advance. If students are managing their time well enough to ask for an extension before the deadline, I will distribute extensions like Oprah distributing cars. But surfacing from a period of non-submission of work to inform your professor -- who is probably managing a minimum of 100 students across their courses -- that you will be submitting late work, because fuck their rules and fuck their workload... this is not likely to win their goodwill.

I genuinely think this is part of it. I get a lot of emails which seem to be trying either to upbraid me for poor performance or to "manage up" and... that's just not the relationship I have with my students. I'm not their manager. Still less are they mine. One of this week's resurfacing students sent a response to my email saying that what he actually needed was for all the assignments in a 10-day period to be reopened. I did not, in my reply, point out that I am not an employee who had failed to submit a deliverable by EOD.

There's been quite a few well-researched news articles here in the UK that seem to suggest that students feel like they are paying for their degree, the same way that you pay for idk, shopping. And therefore their substandard work and attitude should be perfectly acceptable to their teachers who I guess in this equation are effectively retail staff.

As opposed to realising that education fundamentally costs money and they are privileged to live in a country where the government pays for it until they are 18.

Those shockingly high “illiteracy” statistics that go around aren’t saying that like 22% of Canadians or 21% of Americans or whatever literally can’t read.

That’s the number of people at level 1 literacy or below. Level 1 literacy is like grade school level. Able to read labels and straightforward instructions and whatnot.

Which is like. Still higher than the ideal for sure, but it’s not like a fifth of adults literally can’t read. They’re just kinda bad at it.

He talks about his career but also, candidly discusses his eating disorder. Some people might not know about it since I feel he doesn't get the same amount of attention as other drivers, but he's touched on it in the past - and has been shot down by people like DC, trying to minimise it - but I think this is the first time I'm seeing him be so open in such a way. The photo accompanying that section is sobering. In a sport where unsavoury things are glossed over, it's extremely brave for him to talk about it so frankly.

He also talks about mental health, touches on obsession, his rivalry with Lewis, and depression. He ends with where he's at today, which we all can see is a much happier and healthier Valtteri, and I'm so glad that he is.
