Suddenly thinking of 1989’s The Little Mermaid and you know what, give Eric some props here because he had the weirdest fucking hour of his life—

Wakes up from hypnosis where he was about to marry a woman he’s never seen before with his mystery girl’s voice, the instant he wakes up then the cute girl he’s actually fallen in love with now has that voice. Then she drops to the floor and has a fish tail, and then the first girl is suddenly cackling “too late!” and bursting out of her skin. So it turns out she’s actually an octopus woman who drags herself over to the real mystery girl - who’s a mermaid?! They’re real?! - and taking her back into the ocean. And Eric has no idea what’s going on here but okay, one of these women is clearly evil and he needs to go after his mystery girl.

And all of this happens/he realizes what he has to do within like, a single minute.

Prior to this he was just living out a sweet romance after having a Meet Cute with a shipwrecked girl, but okay, guess he’s involved in whatever the fuck this is. Acting first, questioning later.

And this is all before the kaiju attacks.

And let's also remember that Eric is one of the few Disney heroes who actively, deliberately murdered the villain.

He went "Okay then" and killed.

I would say killed the villain, not murdered. Murder implies that it was premeditated and out of malice. Eric was defending his girlfriend's life while Ursula was attempting to murder her. He was well and fully justified in his actions.

In legal terms, 1st degree murder is any murder that is premeditated, even if the premeditation was only for a minute. 2nd degree murder involves no premeditation but resulting in a deliberate action to cause harm. 3rd degree/manslaughter is purely accidentally and/or a result of gross negligence.

With this in mind, it's safe to say that Eric did murder Ursula, as he deliberately steered the ship to impale her with the bowsprit, but would be pardoned on account that he was defending the life of another (Ariel).

I'm volunteering for a literary journal right now and there's two things I think you all should know.

1. Most people that submit to literary journals are cis white men. We know this because our journal has an anonymous survey about demographics for people that submit.

2. Most things that get submitted to the creative non fiction section are on the level of middle school "What I did over the summer" essays.

I cannot see the demographics of the people whose essays I'm reading, but guys, if you are wondering if you should submit your work to a literary journal or not, I promise you that just in terms of statistics there are a lot of mediocre cis white men and people in general confidently submitting weird crap that isn't literature to literature magazines. Do it. Submit your work. Please. If you want there to be more diversity in literature, be the diversity. Do it. Do it do it do it.

In general literary magazines want to include more diversity, but if poc, queer people, disabled people, etc. don't submit their work then they aren't gonna get more diverse because we just won't have the material necessary to get more diverse. Submit your work. Do it. Do it. Do it do it do it.

Many indie lit mags also welcome works from BIPOC and LGBTQIA creatives because the editorial staff themselves are in that demographic. Quarantine brought on the start of the SO many indie lit mags - it’s almost a golden age. Don’t be afraid to submit — there will always be so many niches and aesthetics that one will bound to be the one that fits your style. 

There is so much work from marginalized narratives in litmags these days — people lament there is no representation in media, but that disregards the progress and diversity of the works of editors and writers who help make these litmags possible. 

There is representation, and it is flourishing. They are waiting to be read.

As much as I make fun of Percy for being down bad from day one what I really love is that he truly thinks this is regular friend behaviour. He’s unleashing his inner wattpad mafia boss for Annabeth, has her picture on his mirror, promises he’d burn down Olympus for her, seems offended there’s ‘another’ boyfriend and thinks it is purely platonic. And the best part is Percy is such a loverboy in all meanings of the world that that genuinely is understandable because he is simultaneously going to the sea of monsters for Grover, having Grover’s picture on his mirror, telling Grover he looks beautiful in a wedding dress, embracing Grover like the husband he presumed missing at sea and being so soulmated to his best friend that they dream together.

I also just love why Percy takes so long to understand his own feelings.

When he meets Grover (granted he met Grover before her) and Annabeth, in one fell swoop they both become the fish friends he ever had on such a close level and they tether him to this new part of his identity that he’s exploring. When his world turns upside down, he has them and that’s why he holds them in such high regard.

In the show, in season 2, Percy tells annabeth that he would burn the world down for her but it’s not so much that he’s saying this action is about her. He’s expressing what he’s capable of and that it scares him. He would do the same for Grover but in that one statement, he told annabeth how much she means to him and that he’s aware she’s special to him but for now, it’s not explicitly more than platonic.

His feeling for her so deep-rooted that he didn’t even realize immediately when this bedrock foundation of feelings he had for her morphed form platonic to romantic. You can really see this in the Titan’s Curse novel. It’s when Percy starts to explicitly realize annabeth is different to him that Grover despite the fact that he loves them both, and in the previous novel, he experienced brotherly love with Tyson. Im such a fan of how we got to watch his emotional depth evolve through exposure to new relationships.

Then it all comes together when he realises he likes annabeth but doesn’t know what to do about it. He almost confesses at the end of Titans Curse and then backs out. He realises Annabeth feels the same in the Battle of the labyrinth and the last Olympian.

To OP’s point, Percy lives with all his heart, so it was never a situation of “I like annabeth more than my other friends so I must have a crush on her.” It was always that how he loved her changed with time and grew right under his nose and he had no way of telling the difference until he was fully in love.

I also always think about “there’s another boyfriend?” And giggle because how could he not realise how that sounded? But then I realised it could be the case that he knows people might mistake them for a couple; they might mistake any teenage boy and girl for a couple but Percy knows who all of annabeth’s friends are. So the idea that there’s a guy close enough to her to be mistaken for her boyfriend and he doesn’t know about it makes him upset that she wouldn’t tell him. So probably a smidge of jealousy and a smidge of wondering why he was left out of the loop.

percy being afraid of thalia and them not getting along really well makes much more sense now because now thalia actually has more incentive to hate the gods, especially her father. imagine your father turns you into a tree to punish you, when it's his decisions that led to your existence, you lose 6 years of your life, you don't get to see your friends grow up, and when you wake up you find one of your friends is actively fighting against the gods AND there's a prophecy which says that you might have to decide the fate of the world in less than a year, by either choosing to go against your father - which would mean going against most of your friends, destroying the only safe places for people like you, and letting your textbook evil grandfather become ruler of the universe, OR choosing to stay on the side of your father - which would mean going up against your oldest, closest friend who was the first person to treat you as a person and not an otherworldly being or a mistake, and it would also mean supporting your father WHO LITERALLY TURNED YOU INTO A TREE AND TOOK AWAY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR AUTONOMY JUST BECAUSE HE HAD YOU. AND YOU DIDN'T WANT TO BE A VESSEL IN HIS WAR. thalia's life is so tragic, any decision she would make was bound to hurt many people in the process, and genuinely nobody could hold it against her that she joined the huntress and took herself out of the situation entirely. i think they knew the prophecy was never going to be about thalia from the second she said no to zeus that day on the hill, and choosing to join the huntress was her way of not having to choose between a bad and a worse option. good for her that she finally found peace in something.

most upsetting thing about stebbins to me is that he doesn't really react to anything until garraty almost gets himself killed trying to get a hug from his mom. he's pushed through days of walking and watched 40+ boys die violently but the thing that finally makes him crack is seeing another boy put his life on the line just to feel affection from a parent, because he knows that feeling too intimately to push it down.
