In 1986 nine-year-old Shawn spencer is running through the house with a red shawl he stole from his sister tied around his neck. Howard the Duck just came out, and Gus and Shawn snuck into the movies to see it. "Shawn! Shawn! I told you to stay out of my stuff!" His older sister calls from upstairs, he looks up as he runs and trips over the lift between the kitchen and the living room, knocking over a lamp. "Oops." He mumbles and Y/n runs down the stairs, "what was that?" She calls coming down, and sighs when she sees the glass. "Ok, be careful," she helps him up making sure he didn't cut himself. She always did that; she never got mad which is why he actually listens to her. She gives him the benefit, he loves his sister, a lot, she acts more like a mom now adays, but that's ok. She unties her shawl from his neck, "this was expensive," she says looking at him softly, "I didn't mean to," he mumbled, and she nods, "ok, you go outside and play. I'll handle the glass," he started to interject but he continues knowing what she is going to say, "I will handle dad, go to the arcade with Gus or something, take my coin purse, it's in my bag on the table." His eyes light up, and he runs to the table, "thanks Y/n!"
That night he went to Gus's for dinner, and she makes dinner for her dad for when he gets home. She stands by the stove making some hot dogs and mac and cheese. She's learning to cook, she always watches Saturday's Kitchen with Keith Floyd. She writes the recipes down, and she tries her hardest, her dad can only cook so much. He cooks steak pretty well; anything barbecue he has pretty much down. The front door opens, and she knows he has spotted the empty vase spot by now. It was eye line to the door. "Kids, I'm home, Shawn? Y/n?" He calls walking to the empty ring of dust left from the vase on the floor. "He is at Gus's" she calls from the kitchen making mac and cheese. He steps in stressed from his long day putting his belt on the counter, "the vase," he started, and she nodded, "it was an accident I took care of it, and no it wasn't Shawn." He looks unconvinced crossing his arms, "it wasn't?" She shook her head making his plate, "I tripped when I was looking for my lip gloss." He sits arms still crossed as she set his plate down, "which lip gloss?" He asked and she put her plate down, looking him in the eyes, "strawberry pound cake." She answers and turns to make a glass of lemonade and sits down. She eats her mac and cheese, and he sighs, getting up to get a beer. "Why do you do that?" He asks rhetorical, he knows the answer, she feels responsible for her brother. Ever since the divorce and their mom leaving. "Do what?" He sits and eats his hot dogs, "you take responsibility for things that's not your fault. He needs to learn consequences."
"He knows consequences." She huffs and he scoffs, "what did you do when he broke the vase?" She shrugs, "I told him to go play, I gave him some quarters." He pinches the bridge of his nose, "you sent him to the arcade. Y/n, if he makes a mess he has to clean it, you have to let him be guilty or at least understand what he did and how he should improve." She shrugs eating her mac and cheese, "that's your job." He nods sitting down, "your right, it is my job. I am your and his father, but he listens to you. You can't clean all his messes forever. No matter how much you tried."
"I know." He sighs and continues his dinner, "I hope so, I know you feel you have to take care of him, and I appreciate that. Just remember your allowed to let him clean his own messes."

The phone rang loudly echoing through the psych office as Gus reached for the phone Shawn threw his cheerios in air tackling his friend to the ground. "Don't get that!" He yelled waiting for the phone to stop ringing and ignoring Gus's glare. "You have got to be kidding me," Shawn let him go, "I have no idea what you mean." He said absentmindedly, grabbing an old shirt and tossing it on the spilled milk trying to clean it up but ultimately just smearing it around. "You can't ignore her forever. That could have been a client, or the precinct, we have the water bill to pay." Shawn groaned giving up on the milk, "God Gus I am not ignoring her, I just don't want to talk to her! Ever again! Ever! We will just go to the precinct, okay?" Gus nodded and they went headed to the door, Shawn leaned a little further down in his seat. So, no one could see him, even though he knew she would see Gus first, precautions.
They came to the precinct and Juliet was fast working away at some report she was stressing too much about. Shawn noticed that she was tapping her pen rapidly tapping the pen on the pad before she writes a paragraph, thinking what she is going to say at least three times. 'Gotta love Jules' he thinks fondly he looks over at Lassiter's desk and he was focused on his computer which was tilted more towards him. He kept looking around and then re -adjusting his tie, he is nervous, why? He rubbed his nose with his thumb and pointer finger which is Lassiter's tell when he is bluffing. Poker. Shawn strides over to him with a smile, "hey Lassie, how much you lose?" He glared at him, "I beg your pardon?" He points his hand to his head and looks up at the ceiling smirking, trying not to break his character, "well the psychic world is telling me you are playing a mean game of hold em, and you don't know when to fold em." Lassiter stood from his chair slowly, "Spencer you have some nerve -"
"Shawn?" He was interrupted by a sweet but hesitant voice, Shawns smile drops, and his face goes white. Gus looks at his friend with a worried look, but Gus was honestly relieved to see her after all this time, she was like a big sister to him. Y/n Spencer the Y/n Spencer, she always had a way to get them out of jams, she always had their back, she was their biggest supporter, until Shawn and her had a big fight about their father and parted ways. They haven't seen each other in almost five years. "Who is this?" Juliet asked confused, Shawn stammered for a second before saying, "she's, my sister." The group looked at her with confused expressions which made her feel really uncomfortable. "So, I guess you don't talk about me much?" She jokes, with a smile, "I tried to call but it just rang through, so dad said try here something about you being a psychic detective now?"
"Yes, I use my gift for good." He said emphasizing the word gift trying to make her go with the act. She caught on before she said anything, already talking with their father. "Sure, yeah, glad to see you are doing something you are proud of." Lassiter shook his head as if coming back to reality, "I'm sorry you have a sister? That you just failed to mention?" He said skeptically and she looked down and Shawn looked at her guilty, "well it was kind of, yeah."
"Tell them Shawn." Gus said hitting his shoulder and shook his and Gus nodded, they looked at each other have a silent conversation. Shawn sighed very dramatically "fine! Look here's what happened! Y/n and my father have always been close and as we all know he and I have had a rocky relationship!"
"All you do is fight." Juliet said nodding along and Gus hummed in agreement, "thank you Jules, anyway; back in the day it was worse. We were at each other's throats and Y/n and him were always a team ganging up on me!"
"They wanted you to make something of yourself and not be a slob who threw cheerios all over the floor." Gus said and Lassiter looked at him furrowed brows, "thank you Gus, like I was saying, they ganged up on me and they practically forced my hand out of the house. Then! She steals my thunder and moves out and goes to LA with her boyfriend like a year later!"
Lassiter crossed his arms, "so, let me get this straight you were a slob, much like you are now. So, your supportive big sister said get a job for your own self sake, and you took it to heart. Then you ran away, and then you continued to take it to heart when she moved on with her life without you in it. Now she is back, and you are hiding from her cause you feel guilty, because you know you are wrong?" He smiled, and Shawn frowned "how'd I do psychic?" He asked and nodded, "pretty good, now that I told you everything, Columbo." Shawn sassed turning to his sister, "Y/n in light of recent events I see that I might have been wrong." She smiled at him, and Gus scoffed, "dude?" Shawn asked offended and Gus rolled his eyes, "dude." Gus replied sternly, "I never wanted her to leave in the first place. I didn't even like Ethan. He did not pass the B.G.B.T." Y/n rolled her eyes, "Gus not this again, you cannot tell every guy by this it's not possible."
"I hate to ask," Juliet asked and Lassiter tried to cut her off from saying anything at all, but Gus was already explaining. "The Burton. Guster. Boyfriend. Test. It is full proof, no boyfriend has ever passed it, and no one ever will until the boyfriend will!" He said proudly, "because it's a made-up test." Shawn said and Gus frowned at him, "let me ask you something Shawn, where is Ethan?" Shawn thought for a second, "good point buddy, Y/n where's Ethan?"
"In LA probably with the girl he cheated on me with." Gus looked at Shawn triumphantly, "point Gus! Suck it!"
"This is a weird way to look at it but yeah good job sweetie," Y/n patting his shoulder, Chief Vick walked in holding a file, "oh good Mr. Spencer, Mr. Guster your here, and who is this?" She asked looking the other Spencer up and down, "oh I was just le-"
"This is our third guy! It was getting boring with two! So, we were like let's bring in my big sis! She is just as good as cop, if not better!" Y/n looked at Shawn who grabbed her arm, Lassiter shook his head, "no, no, no, chief she just walked in here!" The chief looked at her curiously, "just as good as Henry?" She smiled, and Lassiter looked at them seeing red, "she took the D.E.T too and got the same score as me," Shawn said with a fake pout and the chief looked at her impressed, "A perfect score, huh, okay," she hands her the file, "your in. welcome aboard."
