the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

Genuinely the ACOTAR culture wars are beyond me because Feyre fucking dominates the genre by being one of the funniest, most unpleasant illiterate (hysterical that this is because no one in her family wanted to teach her how to read—if you ask me probably on account of what I have to assume was a very present and likely pervasive biting problem from birth) turbo losers who has no survival instincts, no cleverness, and just a raw willingness to commit murder while lying to herself and everyone around her ever penned on page btw. She crashes out for a not insignificant portion of time because she killed two fairies and stabbed them and does not address that she murdered and skinned a third fairy at the start because she is still #notsorry for it. She’s so fucking funny. She’s mean-spirited and vain and angry and hypocritical and boy crazy and insane and a murderer and so silly, and I love her so much. She’s always on some bullshit (monologuing about the parasites (read: the deep darkness inside her soul) to her captive audience of minions who her evil twink husband have ordered to clap on command whenever she says anything because he loves them silly and stupid) the #failgirl personification of what if the monarchy only existed so your evil boyfriend who is obsessed with you but also doesn’t tangibly respect you, can fingerbang you on a throne in front of an annoying misogynist guy or make you dance sexily for a hot evil woman wearing a crown. But also what if you were allowed to make terrible decisions and mistakes all of the time and have the guarantee that someone will always love you because they legally have to—because the universe tethered their soul to yours—and what if he was worse than you and made you worse by virtue of his evil lobotomy causing sperm and he fucked you in the sky over his city of dreamers and you never once questioned how it was possible to have a city full of splendor and privilege in a country built on corpses and poverty and misogyny?

And Nesta is just. Amazing. Fuck you and fuck your stupid fairy magic. I say when we’re done. I hope you all die. I hope we all die. Also (no beers in) I can think of 500 reasons why I am undeserving of love and genuine care, and pretty much every single one of them is tragic enough to recontextualize my behavior in a way that is deeply distressing to anyone who is given the chance to know me in any real way or function. What if I was willing to climb an ancient wall whose sole purpose was to keep me out just in a desperate attempt to save you? What if while you were dying in a place without sun, wishing someone would save you, I was trying to find my way back to you? What if I ripped out the still-beating heart of the Cauldron, the living sentient object from which all magic spills forth, because fuck you for hurting me and I never learned how to be hurt gracefully. What if I never decided to go gently into that light? What if I, for all my flaws, was the only person who loved my sister enough to tell her the truth? What if I gave up the heart I ripped out just so she could live? Honestly, these books would fucking hit sooooo good if they were willing to admit that the beating heart of them is Feyre and Nesta, and that they are the enemies to friends to lovers to enemies to friends to TURBO ENEMIES to some secret fourth thing but make it sister kissers of the entire genre.

And then there’s Elain, who is, like, so deeply unwell and a weird seer who is also baby girl but also definitely keeping secrets with SOME kind of ancient evil unkillable Russian folktale transplant that will become more apparent probably in the next book while stringing along a hot fucking psycho torture Batman-looking action-figure freak. Also, she might get to fuck the hottest man in the series, and if she’s smart she might be able to parlay that into fucking him and The Batman and the hot guy’s hot friends, which include magic bird and the world’s first justified misogynist.

Tamlin is also fucking hilarious. It’s so crazy how Rhysand and Tamlin go from narusasu-level homoeroticism to Rhysand being like “:/ sorry babe, I only made your boyfriend bark on command in front of the evil woman I was fucking (also we were both thinking about your dumb hot blonde boyfriend the entire time, except for that period of time when we both mutually decided to start thinking about your dumb hot blonde boyfriend and you at the same time. don't worry about it) to impress you. Also, I broke your arm for the same reason. As another separate note, do you think Tamlin ever thinks about me? Also don’t worry about the weird bat baby I’m going to fuck into you. This wouldn’t be a problem if we had thought ahead and brought your weird blonde boyfriend who can shapeshift in as a third, because he could be a surrogate for me. Do you think he ever looks up at the night sky and thinks about me? I know I already asked, but it’s important.” Tamlin’s crime truly is that he isn’t manipulative enough, because I think that actually would appeal deeply to Feyre, who is like a baby bird imprinting every new mean person like they are her god given dommy mommy (I suspect that Tamlin was actually too nice for her) and I think Rhysand would find it hilarious and hot and it would immediately cure his Tamlin-shaped-misandry brainworms. I swear to god, if you told her incest and polyamory and watching your husband fuck your boyfriend while your meanest sister is in the same room were options, she would explode into hateful horny little confetti.
