I love desire paths. There's something so wonderous about seeing an echo of humanity. Depending on it's location, a desire path can mean so many different things.
In a city, like the pic above, they represent rebellion, and efficiency. The messiness of humanity. We like to imagine we're oh so logical and neat so we design our cities to be logical and neat an then real humans literally trample on that idea. The ego required to think you can design something perfect that checks every box. Life is all about compromise and patching stuff when some new problem arises. Though people have certainly tried! Ohio state univeristy let students carve their desire paths, and then paved them over. It looks pretty artsy.
Some people will try to discourage desire paths, but this is almost always going to fail.
Eventually, people just have to accept them. Humans are too dang stubborn.
Certain desire paths are just adorable. A 0.5 second time saver. You just can't design for maximum efficiency, humans will always find shortcuts!
Though on occasion a desire path can actually be the least efficient way...especially if you're superstitious.
In a wilder area, such as below, they show us the curiosity of humans. A desire path somewhere natural often tells you there's something interesting just ahead. (Though remember some ecosystems are fragile and will suffer if trampled! Stick to paths in these sorts of areas)
And how about desire stairs? I always think these look so cool. We get see humans determination to climb, to traverse every kind of terrain.
And for something really crazy...a desire path used for centuries will create a 'holloway'
All of these pics are off the Desirepath subreddit, check them out for more examples! And many thanks to the users who submitted these photos.
Also even like. Economically. It’s better to give money to poor people. That’s basic Keynesian economics.
Give $600 to someone with no money and they will put it back into the economy, buying groceries, clothes, accommodations, maybe some small luxuries. Give $600 to a rich person and it goes into their bank accounts and just stays there being useless.
If you give a poor person $20, that same $20 will be spent easily 10x over, by 10 different people, in 10 different businesses- within a week.
1- poor guy buys groceries at a local bodega.
2- the bodega owner pays his employees from the cash in the register.
3- bodega employee goes to Starbucks and tips the barista in cash.
4- the barista owes their roommate from lunch last week and pays them back
5- roommate buys something from an indie creator on Etsy
6- Etsy creator splurges on takeout & tips in cash
7- the takeout delivery driver fills up on gas
8- gas station manager (who got paid from the register) takes their kid to the ice cream truck
9- Ice cream truck driver buys a new tire and gets an oil change
10- mechanic gets lunch on a shift
….and so on.
Giving money to poor people is the single best way to stimulate and energize the economy… because poor people do something with money that rich people don’t- THEY FUCKING SPEND IT.
Giving $600 to a poor person is like composting food scraps. It returns nutrients to the economic ecosystem and supports the livelihood of others.
Giving $600 to a rich person is like tossing plastic into the ocean. It’s added to a massive floating garbage patch of corporate wealth. It disrupts the balance of the economic ecosystem, leading to consequences like economic ecosystem collapse.
In a healthy economy, money continues to flow. Rich people are bloodclots.
Why are “naturally thin” and “born with a fast metabolism” totally acceptable explanations for weight, but “naturally fat” and “born with a slow metabolism” seen as “excuses” for “laziness/irresponsibility/greediness”?
Answer: ignorance, fat stigma and discrimination.
Disabled Person: I can’t do this.
Ableist: Yes you can. Quit using your disability as an excuse. The only disability in life is a bad attitude.
Disabled Person: I can do this.
Ableist: Then you’re not really disabled. You’re just faking, which is offensive to actual disabled people.
Workers, when have you said “fuck this, I quit”?
I used to work at McDonalds (I know). Opening usually involved me at the front counter with a headset on so I could do drive-through orders and handle making coffee / putting orders together / taking money at the front from the little old people that came in at the crack of dawn every morning. We would also have a manager who was there to be important and one person in the kitchen. We’re a small rural town so usually this is fine but we were on kind of a major highway so sometimes it would get busy out of nowhere.
Depending on the manager the amount of help we had would vary wildly. One morning we got super busy and I started cracking under the pressure. I’m a fantastic multi-tasker but my drive-through line was backing up since I was trying to juggle them and all the walk-in folks from my front registers and when it gets packed…well, it’s fun. I glance around trying to find my manager for help. I see him on one of our cameras – he’s outside smoking a cigarette around the side of the building. Mind you, this is like his third trip out to smoke this morning. I’m absolutely dying trying to get caught up. Customers are being passive aggressive saying they will come behind the counter and get their own coffee and stuff. I have people yelling at me in my headset from the drive through. I end up having to remove the headset just to try to get the frontline sorted. I start making progress with the front but I basically had to sacrifice the drive-through customers for two minutes.
Apparently the cars outside start yelling at my manager and interrupt his smoke break so he comes in, sees me with my headset off and goes berserk. He’s like “WHOS TAKING THE DRIVE-THRU ORDERS?” I’m in the middle of trying to get a fresh pot of coffee going so I sort of auto-respond “No one. Hang on.” as I continue to dash around behind our counter to grab a fruit & yogurt parfait for an order. He basically gets in my way and starts giving me shit. Loudly, talking to me like I’m a dog. I point to the camera and yell, loudly enough to disrupt the entire inside of the restaurant. “I’m these two registers, first window, second window, and I’m bagging. I’m like FOUR PEOPLE and you’re out behind the building not doing SHIT!”
His eyes go wide. I can tell he knows I’m holding on by my last thread. He’s sighs. And he’s like “You’re in a ton of trouble but we can talk about this later.” No. Fuck him. I’m done. I’m all riled up from random customers yelling at me. I toss him the headset. “You want to give me shit for not being able to run like four stations with no support? Run five. I’ll watch.” I remove my name badge.
He went to say something to me. I turn away, facing the one girl working in the kitchen who is watching this all play out. I remember telling her “I’m so sorry.” and then I dropped my name badge, toss my hat on the counter, grab a water cup, put on (and zip) my jacket so my uniform is covered up. I go to the drink fountain, fill my water cup, and then I go sit on the far side of the seating area and watch him go down in flames. He ends up ALSO taking off the headset and picking up the phone so he can spam call the whole workforce one by one trying to call for help. It’s like 5AM so no one is going to accept a call from their work number. About ten minutes into his struggle he ends up very loudly pleading with me to come back from behind the counter. I can’t even see him on the other side of the sea of people swarming the counter at this point.
I call back “I need a smoke first!” and I go outside.
I don’t smoke. I’ve never smoked. I drive home.
He ended up losing his job.
anyway, my older sister was adopted when she was almost 16 (kinda on accident too), and because of that she got away from an abusive household, went from barely passing classes to being an honour student, and launching into a career where she’s happy and healthy and paying her own way. just two years of parenting where she had 3 meals a day, a bedtime, and parents to help and protect her changed her life radically. Plus, i got an older sister
adopt teenagers.
As an adopted kid I support this message
people who say things like “oh you only have a few years with them” need to remember that these are human beings not a used car. every human being deserves a support system, a jumping off block, a safe place to return
and also, they don’t magically disappear after they turn 18? You can love and support and live with your kid even after they turn 18???
I support this message as a fellow adopted kid :) and all my children will be adopted too!!!
cat: hey you gonna eat that?
human: uh, that’s a rat. They’ve been showing up ever since we started harvesting grain. We don’t eat them, they eat our food.
cat: free game then. Cool.
human: be my guest.
cat: hey is this spot free? It looks warm and I need a place to have my litter.
humans: this is my house. Feel free, I guess, just don’t get stepped on.
cat: hey can you watch my kittens for me? I need to hunt and I don’t want predators finding them.
human: holy shit these buggers are cute. Nothing will happen to them.
cat: I am going to climb on your lap now and you are going to love me.
human: I’m ok with this.
HEY JUST TO REMIND EVERYONE: CATS DOMESTICATED THEMSELVES AND WE ARE JUST LUCKY THAT THEY CHOSE TO HAVE US IN THEIR LIVES
kinda mad because op managed to summarize the domestication of cats in a single post what it took me a 10+ page research paper to explain
Blind people must save a lot on electricity.
They do actually!
I had a blind professor, last semester, and I swung through his office to make up an exam. It was a while before I knew he was in there because he was sitting with the lights off. I finally went in, apologized, and took the exam by the light of a nearby window (which was fine). Forty-five minutes into dead silence he panicked and yelled in this booming voiced, “WAIT, YOU CAN SEE!!!” before diving across his desk to turn on the lights. I’m sure he was embarrassed but I thought it was endearing and it highlighted a large aspect of disabled life that I hadn’t previously considered.
Sort of relatedly I once had professor who was deaf, but she had learned to read lips and speak so she could communicate easily with hearing people who didn’t know sign language. One day she had gotten off topic and was talking a little about her personal life, so that one of the students said “Oh, I know, I grew up in Brooklyn too.”
She stared at him for a long time and then said “How do you know I’m from Brooklyn?”
And he said “You have a Brooklyn accent.”
She said “I do?” and the whole class nodded, and then she burst out laughing and said “I had no idea! The school where I learned to speak was in Brooklyn. I learned by moving my mouth and tongue the way my teachers did. So I guess it makes sense that I have their accent, I just never thought about it.”

why do i keep seeing “jokes” like “lol if you’re ‘touch starved’ you’re just horny lmao”
like
it’s not a sexual thing and is actually pretty important since humans are social creatures
“Human touch has been proven to be vital to emotional, psychological, and physical growth in infants and to some extent in older children and adults.”
“Skin hunger is your body’s reaction to lack of physical touch and it affects an increasing number of Americans while being a non existent phenomenon in more touch-happy countries like France. The problem that we’re learning is that without skin-to-skin touch (might we add that it doesn’t have to be sexual), your body doesn’t produce the hormone oxytocin. Without that natural chemical, adults are more susceptible to depression and infants can have developmental problems or even die.”
“Hugs have also been shown to increase the production of oxytocin in humans; this is the hormone that positively influences our bonding and nurturing behaviors.”
hello???????????
One of my clinical instructors told me that most people need seventeen touches a day to feel nurtured.
Does it have to be human touch or is this why I subject my poor dog to being picked up and cuddled at random throughout the day? Because Its been 84 years since I physically touched another living human with my skin
Pets count!
humans are social creatures who bond well with other social creatures so ya pets count
Touch starved people often benefit from massage therapy, manicures, getting their hair done, social dance, and team sports. It doesn’t have to be intense and intimate!
Personally I’m fond of neck/shoulders/back rubs.
This might explain why I’m both touched starved and wary of people touching me and how I will hug my cats until they’re the ones who squirm.
Saying touch starvation = horny is what leads to people who can’t tell the difference and that leads to bad sex, sex that is bad FOR you, and pushing other people to have sex with you when neither of you really want it, you just need to feel close to someone. (Specifically, this is one of the ways toxic masculinity hurts men, who deserve better and deserve to experience platonic, friendly touch because it is wonderful.)
