Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.

Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires all institutions that receive federal funding to repatriate remains and artifacts so if you can identify the source of something on display absolutely get a hold of that institute’s repatriation office

Just so y'all know, they didn’t just DECIDE to repatriate remains. They had the remains of THOUSANDS of Native bodies on OPEN AIR DISPLAY at the Chicago museum until we got NAGPRA passed. That then forced them to send back the bodies. It was BUILT atop our graveyards, where they dug down until they exposed us. Imagine we went to the national cemetery, dug down through the earth, opened all the caskets, exposed them to the air, basically threw a big tent over it, built a walkway so we could literally walk all over your family’s bodies, and CHARGED ADMISSION FOR IT.

THAT’S what the Chicago Field Museum did. That’s not even counting all the bodies they dug up and carelessly threw into storage like overstock in a backroom warehouse.

They STILL have ceremonial objects that are ONLY supposed to be observed at certain times by certain people during certain ceremonies on display. They STILL have objects that are literally believed to be alive/houses for ancestors of specific families on display. And they charge you to view it. We see no profit from this. They still BUY AND SELL our people’s history from OTHER NON-NATIVES. We have no input.

Please don’t support these exhibits. If you wish to learn about things related to us, visit OUR TRIBAL MUSEUMS and cultural heritage centers, not places literally built on genocide.
