moss probably wants to switch to linux at some point between now and october when windows 10 support ends does anyone have any reccomended distros for linux? moss is unfamiliar with linux for context

i'll put my recommendations in order from most likely pick to least likely pick!

linux mint (clicky link!) is the most popular beginner distro for windows users, and the most recommended home distribution! it has very good support, a large software selection, tutorials available online, and it looks conventional and familiar to a windows 10 user by default. it's a good balance for most people between being familiar and easy to tinker with.

pop! os (clicky click!) seems nice too, but it's definitely, uniquely linux. it won't be so familiar to a windows user, but some people prefer it. in my experience it doesn't work quite as well as mint on different computers, and the ui feels a little awkward by default, but it's a quickly growing distro that is shaping up to be the third biggest linux distribution after mint and ubuntu. it is kind of marketed towards the intermediate user - someone who knows a little about linux and wants a distribution that won't get in their way or hold their hand.

ubuntu (also clicky!) is the most popular linux distribution in the world, and one of very few that you can get pre-installed on computers from major manufacturers like lenovo! it has lots of tutorials and guides in different languages and the biggest number of software developers officially support it. it does use "snap" software packaging and some other proprietary things, though, which make it a little bit confusing for a new user and not so good to tinker with. the main version of ubuntu wouldn't look anything like windows, either, which makes it frustrating and confusing for a lot of new users. i tried ubuntu as my first distro, but i didn't like it and quickly switched to mint.

of course, all of these are based on debian, the grandfather of many modern linux distros. debian is kind of catering towards the intermediate - advanced user, but it's super stable and very powerful and customizable. if you're up to the challenge, you can basically make debian into whatever you want - but it's definitely not as beginner oriented as mint, or even pop! os.

I'm so proud of my netbook. A computer so weak and old that most people would consider just throwing it away. A computer that probably couldn't even run Windows 7 well. A computer that, even for its time, wasn't particularly fast.

But it still marches on. Upgraded to 2GB RAM, running Debian, with a lightweight desktop, upgraded to an SSD, and it's still perfectly capable. Sure, it still isn't particularly fast, but it's not unusable. Sure, the battery sucks, but the charger is ridiculously long. Sure, the GPU isn't even supported by the latest Mesa, but that's what Mesa Amber is for.

The fact that it's so old and slow but yet can handle modern software and modern tasks is so astounding to me. And I barely need to make any sacrifices.

I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 w a 3rd gen i5 and 8GB ddr4 I daily drive from around 2012ish, it's not the oldest, but IDK what other laptop could be used as a weapon

I do most of my writing on Fourby, my dell latitude D530 with a core 2 duo! She handles LXDE really well

However, now that my writing process has all been converted to plaintext, I'll soon be using my Pentium II and III laptops for the same task, from a tty =]

In the future I'll start going truly old-school! ...so far, for me, that's just an original Pentium MMX machine. But I love the original pentiums. Ceramic, baby!!

Still gotta get good at using jupp, tho.. teeheh
