I just looked up Kiribati because tiny island nations are sometimes weird Libertarian attempts at anarchic self governance but

1. Kiribati is a parliamentary republic, mainly indigenous, and seems cool as hell.

2. They signed a treaty with the US acknowledging their sovereignty on the day I was born, so they're now my favorite and we are birthday buddies.

When someday I actually get to make my dream trip to Aotearoa, I'm gonna figure out a way to visit Kiribati and summit the highest point on the island, Joe's Hill. I'm not a mountaineer but it's 42 feet high so I feel like I can manage it.

Seriously, though, the French LOVED Edgar Allan Poe, thanks in particular to Jules Verne.

He even wrote a sequel to Poe’s only novel, and numerous essays about how great an author Poe was.

By all accounts, Poe (who lived a penniless life in the US) really *was* baffled by all of this.
