Sorry for basically stating the obvious here but oh well. Xander looking up to Riley/sorta wanting Riley so bad is so because he can't let go of things. Badass supersoldier who's dating Buffy vs guy who was a solider for one night due to a spell and still obsesses over it partially because he hates being the average Joe of the group who also had (has? I feel like those feelings have never fully gone away) a massive crush on Buffy. Xander sees Riley as a proxy for his fantasies which I find soooo interesting for his character but also worrying for Buffy. It would've been cool to see him join The Initiative to try to be more like him/squash his insecurities over being the normal guy by no longer being the normal guy. Ohhh man he would be crushed once the supersoldier stuff wears off after they take the place down

I love how much of a dork Spike is when he’s let in to Buffy’s house in 5x22, it’s so precious. he comes right up to the door, and has to remind Buffy so awkwardly with a hand up against an invisible barrier that he’s not allowed inside. and it takes her a moment because she forgot that he couldn’t come in but there’s zero hesitation in re-extending that invitation with a little smile.

and then this over a century old vampire, badass Slayer of Slayers, has to fight a smile of his own and take a moment to appreciate his welcome, gazing at the seams of the entryway, before making the most tentative step over the threshold and saying “presto” at the lack of barrier, a catch in his unnecessary breath.

he’s so overcome by this moment. he’ll never again take for granted his presence in Buffy’s life and home, (not knowing that it will Buffy’s last time alive and in her home for a while).

The first time Buffy and Spike had a full conversation, after numerous murder attempts, she immediately invited him over to her house and introduced him to her mother. Which is obviously deranged and somewhat questionable even in context, though what else do we expect from those two (/affectionate).

But an observation I made recently about those scenes in Becoming part 2, is how much they parallel the ep Angel. In both episodes Buffy gets unexpectedly rescued by Spike/Angel, which indirectly prompts her to invite them over to her house, where they run into and get introduced to her mother. I doubt this was intentional by the writers, it is however fascinating how differently Joyce's relationship with both of these vamps pans out from that moment on.

Thinking about how much more potential Tara had as a character. Like. Her backstory? Her whole deal? Her mom died when she was a teenager and her shitty dad lied to her that she's a demon. Also she's gay. She must have so much shame to unlearn. I'm sad she didn't get more interesting character development instead of the Willow magic addiction plot.

This is like incredibly fucking scuffed because I put it together in canva in like ten minutes (and I quite possibly made errors) but I was always curious to see smth like this for Buffy relationships. It is really interesting but also difficult. In the sense that like, Buffyverse relationships are wierd and complicated. When do you count Tillow as starting? New Moon Rising? Hush? Somewhere in between? How could you possibly define Spike and Buffy's relationship in Season 7? They are Not together romantically, but like, they're also Buffy and Spike about it and lowkey very much in love but they’re not Dating or kissing or having sex, so like ??

i fully get that spuffys don’t vibe with spike getting his soul back because the soul lore is just so damn irritating and it reflects the show’s very juvinile and boring black and white morality but i’m sorry i love that shit so much that’s peakkkkk romance to me. spike loved buffy so much he killed himself/the worst parts of himself for her. and then he actively hid this information from her cause he didn’t want her to feel like she owed him anything and he just wanted to be there for her in any way she needed. buffy’s first relationship seeded the belief that loving her and being loved by her changes that person for the worst and every following relationship reinforced that belief. now she’s face to face with in the flesh proof that she doesn’t ruin people, that someone’s love for her would motivate them to change for the better in a way that no one even considered possible. many have said this but no one is doing it like spuffy.

I want Buffy's abusive behaviours in S6 to be acknowledged and discussed not because I want to compare which is more toxic and fucked up; Spike or Buffy. No, no, never interested in that.

I want it to be acknowledged because Buffy, the hero, having and enacting her ugliness and badness and hurt are so important to me. The symbol of good and the epitome of a good person being imperfect and so human make me feel seen and that's so important to me.

One of my least favorite things is comparing who behaved "worst". Because it usually is used in a way to erase the impact of the "better" behaved person.

it can't be erased, the harm still exists. By ignoring one half of it is ignoring the complex nature that everyone sees and feels everything differently

Which makes Buffy's repeated patterns from s2 of isolation or pushing people away, interesting. her ability to reconnect with those that matter, shows her strength

genuinely cannot believe it takes spike and buffy about ten seconds to fall into such an intense psychic lockstep that during their second interaction. ever. in their lives. they flirtatiously toss aside their weapons just so they can get their hands on one another. instinctively trusting in the other's sense of honor. approaching their fight like it's play like it's dancing like it's already played out a hundred times and like they're just getting started. they just met a fucking nanosecond ago. they have known each other for lifetimes. i am clawing at the walls
