It has come to my attention that few know of the Butter Mage Crisis of 1237
So I shall take on the task of educating you.
It happened when I was but a young apprentice, in the small town of Whimsville (it has since been wiped off the map, as one of the local mages summoned a Great Old One by accident. But I digress).
One of the more.. let's say, daft mages of that generation decided butter would be one of the least dangerous objects to practice evoking sentience on (Obviously no inanimate object should be presented with sentience, as it makes them rather unruly).
The second mistake of that particular mage was to teach the butter the very same sentience spell. Merlin knows what drove him to do that. The butter then proceeded to make not one, not two, BUT EVERY PIECE OF BUTTER in Whimsville sentient, as butters do not know when enough is enough.
The many butters, gluttonous as they're known to be, then wondered what butter tastes like, knowing they were meant for consumption, but never having tasted one of their own. Naturally, the butters began consuming each other. This went on for weeks, until not a single piece of butter was left. It wasn't pretty.
The council then debated making sentience spells illegal, but as the head of the council was the creator of that very spell, it never came to pass. Instead they opted to forbid cannibalism. Foolish of them to believe that this would stop future butters.
The hapless mage who started the carnage was transmuted into a block of butter for his sins.
